Letizia Gerami, 41-year-old, died at Cannizzaro Hospital in Catania, Italy, from injuries suffered more than a month earlier, while spectating the Trofeo Città di Piedimonte hillclimb.

Organized by the Scuderia Salerno Corse, the hillclimb was held on Sunday, 25 June 2017 on an almost three-kilometer stretch of the statal road SS120, between the villages of Fiumefreddo and Piedimonte Etneo, province of Catania in the island of Sicily.

The accident happened about 11h30. One of the 160 cars that took part in the event was the red-colored 1980 Ford Escort MkI #151 driven by Ryan Mangion from Malta. While passing at high speed along the Villa Pupa straightaway, the car went out of control and slid off the track, hitting a group of spectators.

Seven people who were standing behind a tow truck parked in a pitch on the right of the road, where general public were not allowed, received serious injuries. They were taken by helicopter and ambulance to Cannizzaro Hospital in Catania, as well as other zonal hospitals at Taormina and Acireale. Among them were a 15-year-old spectator who was in the intensive care unit of the same hospital until he eventually recovered, and the driver Ryan Mangion who also sustained non life-threatening injuries as a result of the accident.

Letizia Gerami was listed in critical condition, having suffered severe internal injuries and pelvic fractures. She never recovered and passed away in early days of August 2017.
