00:00 Hello and welcome. You are watching What's Trending on One India News with me Arushi Ranjan.
00:05 I am joined by my colleague Ansh Pandey and Ishika Jaiswal.
00:08 Not today, but this topic has been trending since so long.
00:12 I am talking about Deepfakes, an AI technology which is being used negatively in this world.
00:18 If I quote the dictionary, it says,
00:21 "A video of a person in which their face or body has been digitally altered so that they appear to be someone else.
00:28 Typically used maliciously or to spread false information."
00:32 We have even done stories on this which you can watch on our channel.
00:36 For now, we will delve into this topic and discuss what actually is deepfakes.
00:41 So Ansh, first I'd like to ask you that recently the deepfake controversy has erupted
00:47 because of the Rashmika Mandana video which had surfaced online and now even Katrina Kaif is tapped in this.
00:54 So what would you say on this? What actually is deepfake if you want to say for our audience's context?
01:00 Firstly, what exactly is a deepfake is a video and what you say a voiceover
01:05 that is altered in such a way that you get confused that how exactly is that different from the real one.
01:15 Okay, so firstly let's talk about the two videos that have come out.
01:19 Okay, the first video is of Rashmika Mandana and the second is of Katrina Kaif.
01:22 Okay, in both of the videos one cannot differentiate so easily that is that even true or not.
01:28 Right? However, Rashmika Mandana herself came out in open and said that the video is fake and it's not real.
01:36 And now we have a photo of Katrina Kaif that is circulating on social media
01:40 but that is completely different from what she is actually wearing in the Tiger 3 movie that is going to come out very soon.
01:45 And see this has taken a very sharp trend. Deepfakes have existed for a long haul on internet.
01:54 I have seen many, we all have seen many on social media.
01:57 Okay, but after this launch of AI, the things have become more common.
02:03 I don't know you guys cover the AI so much but I have found one AI that AI is so accurate while creating the modulated voices.
02:13 Okay, so you give him any sort of song and that song can be modulated into any voice.
02:19 Like you can modulate it into the voice of Elon Musk, Barack Obama and even Narendra Modi.
02:24 Okay, so that's exactly what deepfake is that it's so real that even you can't take it out that whether is it true or not.
02:32 Okay. Yeah. So you were saying about the Narendra Modi voice changing thing which AI is doing.
02:38 So recently because the elections are bound in many states of India.
02:43 So what political parties are doing, they are even using AI and deepfakes for their convenience.
02:49 The Narendra Modi example if we take. So recently I came across a video on X platform where a video was surfacing of Narendra Modi where his complete lines were changed.
03:00 Like actually he didn't say that but it was surfacing that he has done it like the opposition parties did that.
03:07 So like it's even coming in the political world now. It's indeed coming into the political world.
03:11 Yeah. And it's actually going to take a very not exactly a good turn.
03:17 Okay. Yeah. In 2024 general elections, AI is something that the Election Commission needs to take the care of.
03:24 It's like becoming a PR activity for political parties. Yeah.
03:29 We are joined by our young colleague Ishika Jaiswal here. So we are living in a world of social media.
03:34 Like where we often share pictures. We all are on social media. I'm sure you are also there.
03:39 We share pictures, videos and enjoy our social life. But there is a negative side of it.
03:44 Like if we share photos and videos, we have to be careful.
03:48 What if they are being used like it was in the Rashmika's case?
03:52 So as a young like media enthusiast or as a young person, what's your take on this Ishika, the whole AI negative controversy?
04:02 With the abundance of information that we share on social media, like where we are going or which place we are visiting or anything,
04:09 it creates a breeding ground for information. And cyber security or cyber scammers can easily use them
04:17 and move them and make a false information about us and damaging our reputation and maybe financial image.
04:26 Yeah, yeah, definitely. You're right. So for our audience's context,
04:30 I would like to share what's the whole Rashmika Mandana case.
04:33 So basically what happened, a video surfaced online. Actually, it surfaced in October,
04:38 but it came in news now in November because in a video, a girl was seen wearing a very bold cloth.
04:45 And the face was of Rashmika Mandana. And you couldn't identify that it was not actually Rashmika,
04:51 but some other girl. The girl's name is Zara Patel. She's a UK based influencer.
04:56 So a journalist shared it on X platform and he actually raised this issue.
05:02 And then it was retweeted by the mega star Amitabh Bachchan.
05:06 And then it took a turn and then it would spread on social media.
05:10 People started considering the depth of this issue and the negative impact of AI.
05:16 So that's what happened in Rashmika's case. And now Rashmika even has come in support of it.
05:20 Like you shared the screenshot with me where she even on her Insta story shared her experience
05:28 and what she feels on this. And even Bollywood celebrities like Rinal Thakur
05:32 and many other her colleagues are coming in support of her. So that's a good thing.
05:37 I would like to discuss here, like what's the main threats of this deepfakes video?
05:44 Like what are the exact problems which it could create in this world?
05:49 Well, firstly, like it can malign someone's image.
05:52 Firstly, OK, and then for financial thefts, definitely.
05:58 AI is something that can be used for any sort of things and deepfake is just making it more worse.
06:03 So it has many adverse effects and one needs to stay vigilant that what exactly is going around them
06:08 and how they need to be stay cautious about all of this.
06:12 Like you were saying that even Katrina Kaif is trapped in this.
06:15 Her recent released movie Tiger 3. Like what's the whole case, Ishita?
06:19 After Rashmika Mandani's case, Katrina Kaif has been a victim of deepfake AI tools.
06:26 The original picture which was shared on the social media, her wearing a towel
06:31 and fighting with a Hollywood woman, stunt woman.
06:36 That picture has been more of her wearing a low cut white top instead of a towel.
06:41 OK, and that picture has gone viral.
06:45 And if people are not aware that it's a deepfake video or picture,
06:50 they would think that's the real image. It's a big threat.
06:55 So how can we counter deepfakes at a personal level?
06:59 I would like to share that to our audience.
07:01 So first of all, we have to keep our profile locked.
07:04 Like if you are a public figure, then of course you have to keep it unlocked.
07:08 But if people like us, if we can keep our profile locked,
07:12 yeah, we should be doing that. And the main part which has to be played here is by the government.
07:18 I hope you agree with me, Ansh. Because if the government will put restrictions on the use of AI,
07:24 nowadays anybody with an internet connection can do this. Like anybody can do this.
07:31 So government needs to take proper action on this and put restrictions and bring laws about the AI thing
07:37 because right now what we are seeing is even I would say on lower level
07:42 because the future generation which is coming is going to be full artificial intelligence based.
07:47 This is just a start. Yeah, you're right. It's a start. It's going even worse.
07:52 So the government if they control now, we would be safer in the future.
07:56 And also like if you find anything like this, please report.
07:59 Do not share such videos guys, because if you share such malicious videos,
08:04 such vulgar content about someone which ruins someone's personality and reputation,
08:09 it's like if we can do the least by not sharing the videos.
08:14 Yeah. So that was about it.
08:18 We that's what we think on this negative impact of artificial intelligence and the deep fake controversy
08:26 which has taken the Bollywood and we would just like to make you aware about it
08:31 and ask you to be safe and be not trapped in this technological world
08:35 and we should be using technology. Technology should not be using us.
08:40 Thank you so much for joining in.
