00:00 Welcome to Mojo Plays and today we're taking a look at some fun facts about the PlayStation
00:09 4 you may not have known about.
00:15 Before we begin, we publish new videos all week long, so be sure to subscribe to Mojo
00:20 Plays and ring the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:27 Rhombus with a Purpose
00:29 Compared to the rest of Sony's consoles, the PlayStation 4 might look as if it has
00:33 been arbitrarily designed.
00:35 The previous consoles were all just boxes with some slight style to them.
00:39 Why a rhombus?
00:40 Well, it wasn't just for flair, but efficiency and functionality purposes as well.
00:46 On the front, the USB ports and power and eject buttons were all shoved to one side
00:50 so that users could easily find them.
00:53 As for the reasoning behind the back getting slanted over, this was done to better hide
00:57 your cables, giving your entertainment center a much cleaner look without all those wires
01:02 everywhere.
01:07 Launching to Greatness
01:09 Though we know the PS4 as a truly great console with its assortment of exclusives, the launch
01:14 was arguably a bit rough.
01:16 Yes, we did get some truly great games at the time.
01:19 Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, and Injustice Gods Among Us
01:24 were spectacular titles, but they launched on platforms you most likely already had.
01:29 As for first party, well, no one was jumping to be among the first to play Knack.
01:34 At least we had Killzone Shadow Fall, which was also so-so.
01:39 Messages from Another World
01:41 This is perhaps one of the coolest factoids about the PS4 when looking at its various
01:46 features.
01:47 In case you were one of the many people who did not like the way you had to type messages
01:51 on the PS3, I was definitely one of them, the PS4 took inspiration from one game many
01:57 might be familiar with.
01:58 Dark Souls
01:59 Yes, From Software gave Sony an idea on how to make messaging easier for the PS4.
02:04 Shuhei Yoshida, who served as Sony Worldwide Studios president in 2013, revealed to the
02:10 public that the messaging format in Dark Souls helped in creating the design of the PS4's
02:15 messaging system.
02:16 So, praise the sun for all those times you made use of the quick select words.
02:20 Vita Forever
02:22 The poor PlayStation Vita was such a cool handheld and yet, nobody bought it.
02:27 Oh well, that only means a few got to experience its useful features that worked with the PS4.
02:32 Okay, the one useful feature.
02:43 If you could not afford another DualShock 4 but you supposedly had a PS4 and a Vita,
02:48 you could connect the Vita to your PS4 to use as a controller while Player 2 got the
02:52 DualShock 4.
02:54 Imagine if Sony had tried turning the two into their own Wii U.
02:57 Would we have seen a different Sony today?
02:59 Disk Read Error
03:01 Now as with most forms of evolution, there are some obsolete functions that got tossed
03:06 into the ether, never to be seen again.
03:09 The PS4 was able to read all kinds of formats, USB drives, DVDs, Blu-rays, but what could
03:15 it not read?
03:16 Well despite reading two other disk formats, it could not read the CD, or the compact disk.
03:23 This was because the PS4 was not built with the same laser used to read CDs.
03:29 Hopefully you didn't think your favorite album was busted before throwing it out.
03:33 Bungie and the DualShock 4
03:36 Prior to their acquisition, Bungie did have a hand in making the PS4 as great as it could
03:40 be, well more so the controller than the console.
03:44 While Sony was working on the next iteration of the DualShock, they enlisted Bungie's
03:48 help in how the controller could be the necessary improvement compared to the DualShock 3, especially
03:53 for shooter games.
03:54 The studio even assisted in incorporating the share button.
03:57 This would eventually lead to Destiny putting out a lot of PS4 exclusive content, and of
04:02 course, their acquisition in 2022.
04:05 PS4, Fruit Edition
04:08 Man the PS4 was worth the money, but still, $400 was a hefty price to pay.
04:14 Many folks probably waited for that inevitable price cut of $300, while one young man in
04:19 France outplayed everybody.
04:21 In January of 2019, a 19-year-old man managed to walk out of a supermarket having only paid
04:27 9 euros, or $12, for his PS4.
04:31 How did he do it?
04:32 He weighed the console on a scale for fruits and veggies and used the self-checkout kiosk.
04:38 Law enforcement caught him on his second attempt, and the man was sentenced to 4 months behind
04:43 bars.
04:44 Room with a View
04:45 Remember PlayStation View and PlayStation TV?
04:56 No?
04:57 Well, neither did the rest of the Mojo Plays team.
04:59 But I remembered.
05:01 I always remember.
05:08 PlayStation View and PlayStation TV were two products Sony developed in an effort to break
05:12 into the video-on-demand and television streaming markets, respectively.
05:16 If their obscurity wasn't evident already, neither lasted long enough to catch wind.
05:21 Sony would close down PlayStation View in 2020, five years after its launch, citing
05:25 the slow growth in the market.
05:27 As for PlayStation TV, the service died as quickly as it launched, only surviving a couple
05:32 of years before its plug was pulled in 2015.
05:34 At least Aqua Teen Hunger Force got the money.
05:40 Change of Plans
05:57 In all honesty, this one is mostly based on rumors and talk from circles inside games
06:01 media and the gaming industry, but it's still worth discussing.
06:05 You remember how Sony absolutely humiliated Microsoft's Xbox One reveal with a lower
06:10 price tag in that "How to Share Used Games" video?
06:14 Well, apparently that was all last minute moves from PR.
06:26 Over the years, industry insiders have talked about how this was not on the table.
06:31 Rumor has it that Sony was about to enforce similar policies that Microsoft had for the
06:35 Xbox One.
06:37 Then they saw how Microsoft got raked over the coals.
06:40 Sony clearly saw this as an opportunity for free goodwill and publicity, and it helped
06:44 them pull the rug out from Microsoft's feet.
07:01 Xbox Capacitor Not Included
07:08 If you followed Sony closely throughout the PS4's life cycle, you probably got to see
07:12 the plethora of different SKUs with designs inspired by various games.
07:16 But did you know there was one made to celebrate a historical milestone?
07:20 December 3rd, 2014 marked the 20th anniversary of PlayStation.
07:34 To commemorate the occasion, Sony released a limited edition of the PS4, where the big
07:39 rhombus and the DualShock 4 were modeled after the original PlayStation console.
07:44 Only 12,300 of these were made, which was the same number of PS1s that were made for
07:49 launch way back in 1994.
