Jeffrey Cheah Foundation awards RM52 million in scholarships for 2023

Jeffrey Cheah Foundation held its Scholarships and Awards Ceremony 2023 recently, disbursing RM52 million in scholarships to almost 5000 deserving students this year, bringing the total amount of scholarships and grants awarded to RM670 million to date since the foundation was established in 2010.  Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah Binti Almarhum Sultan Idris Shah, Permaisuri Johor, presented the scholarships to 300 recipients. 00:25 But with a few hundred doctors looking after me, I think I should achieve that target.

00:32 The Jeffrey Chia Foundation held its Scholarships and Awards Ceremony 2023 recently,

00:37 dispersing RM52 million in scholarships to almost 5,000 deserving students this year.

00:43 This brings the total amount of scholarships and grants awarded to RM670 million to date,

00:49 since the foundation was established in 2010.

00:54 The Pemaisuri of Johor, Raja Zarif Sofia Binti Al Mahhum Sultan Idris Shah,

00:59 presented the scholarships to 300 recipients of Sunway University Postgraduate Studentships,

01:05 Sunway University Postgraduate Scholarships for PhD and Masters,

01:09 the Chancellor's Scholarship, Sunway Excellence Scholarship,

01:12 Sunway Victoria University Excellence Scholarship,

01:15 Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali Scholarship for Creative Arts and Music,

01:19 as well as the Jeffrey Chia Foundation Community Scholarship.

01:23 Sunway University founder and Chancellor Tan Sri Sir Jeffrey Chia said,

01:27 "The ceremony reflected the foundation's firm belief in transforming lives

01:31 through the provision of quality education, with a commitment to giving back to society

01:35 and sustaining quality education for present and future generations of students."

01:40 It is my firm belief that the destiny of a person, society and nation

01:48 is shaped by quality education and ethical values.

01:59 To all our scholarship recipients here, your experience at Sunway University

02:05 will arm you, not just with the necessary skills and academic credentials,

02:12 but also nurture those core values to help you succeed in your chosen career.

02:20 The foundation aims to address the financial needs of marginalized and disadvantaged students

02:26 by providing them with equal educational opportunities.

02:29 Chia is also encouraging corporations and individuals to contribute towards an endowment fund

02:34 he established in 2020 to ensure Sunway University's survival in perpetuity.

02:40 As I said, my tagline is "I aspire to inspire before I expire", right?

02:46 Because every one of us have a shared life.

02:48 Before I expire, I want to do a lot more things, impactful things.

02:52 And I am trying to inspire other people who can afford it to give back to society

02:58 in an impactful way, like what we are doing.

03:01 I think this is the one good thing that anyone can do,

03:05 is to give the young people a good education with the right values, I always say.

03:12 Chia also paid tribute to Raja Zarys Sofya's leadership in the fields of philanthropy and education,

03:17 which aligns with Sunway Group's commitment towards its corporate social responsibility

03:21 during a campus tour around Sunway University with a royal guest of honour,

03:25 as well as with Education Minister, Fatah Niazidek and other esteemed guests.
