Edinburgh Headlines 8 November: Edinburgh tram services disrupted after West End crash involving car and pedestrian.
Transcript
00:00 Welcome back to EdinburghNews.com. I'm evening news reporter Kevin Quinn.
00:04 Here are our three top stories today, Wednesday November the 8th.
00:08 A controversial Edinburgh traffic scheme is simply transferring cars
00:14 onto previously quieter residential roads, critics complain. Residents in Kirstorfen claim the low
00:20 traffic neighbourhood measures in the area have done nothing to reduce overall traffic volumes
00:25 or encourage people to cycle rather than use their cars. Instead they say the scheme has
00:30 forced motorists to use a less safe junction to join the main road.
00:34 In other news today, the Association of Scotland's Self-Caterers has unveiled new figures showing
00:44 only a small number of professional self-catering businesses have seen their license applications
00:49 approved by the City of Edinburgh Council. A freedom of information request was submitted by
00:55 the trade organisation to ascertain the number of licenses granted, declined or pending approval,
01:00 as well as the total fees collected. The FOI shows just around a quarter of the estimated
01:06 short-term let properties in Edinburgh actually exist. Short-term lets have been used as a scapegoat
01:13 for wider housing challenges, but with just 1,181 self-catering businesses in Edinburgh
01:19 on non-domestic rates compared to 1,201 in 2010, there are over 240,000 dwellings in Edinburgh,
01:28 over 9,200 of which are empty homes. Also today, tram services were disrupted
01:38 after a crash involving a car and a pedestrian at Edinburgh's West End yesterday around lunchtime.
01:44 The crash happened at around 12.10pm at Athol Crescent. Edinburgh trams tweeted at 12.24pm that
01:50 services were only running between the airport and Haymarket Yards. That's you brought right up to
01:56 date for Edinburgh stories today. Keep an eye on our website edinburghnews.scotsman.com for all your
