00:00 - It all comes down to this.
00:02 Election Day is here.
00:04 And today on your side is your local election headquarters.
00:06 Thanks for joining us. I'm Stephanie Hudson.
00:08 - And I'm Regina Mobley.
00:10 Whichever party controls the General Assembly
00:13 will have the power to shape the future of the Commonwealth.
00:16 Capital Bureau reporter Tyler Englander
00:19 takes a look at some key races.
00:21 - We've been asking the same question for months now.
00:24 With all 140 seats in Virginia's General Assembly
00:28 up for grabs in this election,
00:30 which party will control the House of Delegates
00:33 and which party will control the State Senate?
00:36 Now the good news, we're just hours away
00:38 from getting answers to those questions.
00:40 Let's start with a breakdown of where things currently stand
00:43 in the House of Delegates.
00:45 Currently, Republicans hold a 48-46 seat majority
00:49 with six vacancies.
00:51 50 seats are needed for a majority.
00:53 Let's take a look at some key races.
00:56 We start in Northern Virginia with House District 22.
00:59 Republican Ian Lovejoy is being opposed
01:02 by Democrat Travis Nembhard.
01:04 The district voted for Governor Glenn Youngkin
01:07 by seven points in 2021,
01:09 but is trending blue with the district supporting Republicans
01:12 for Congress last year, but by only 3%.
01:16 Now let's move to Central Virginia
01:18 and District 82 in Petersburg.
01:20 Democrat Kimberly Pope-Adams trying to deny
01:23 delegate Kim Taylor a second term.
01:26 Taylor won this seat by only 515 votes in 2021,
01:30 and we expect a similar margin this time around.
01:34 And our final race we're looking at is in Hampton Roads.
01:37 Republican Karen Greenhalgh is facing Michael Fagans.
01:41 This is another seat that's been trending blue in recent years.
01:44 Greenhalgh won this seat by only 112 votes two years ago.
01:48 Now something to keep in mind,
01:50 a 50/50 tie is possible in the House of Delegates,
01:54 which would mean with neither party in the majority,
01:56 leaders would have to reach a power sharing agreement
01:59 in order to conduct business.
02:01 Live at the Capitol, I'm Tyler Englander.
