00:02 - Today I'm looking for is someone working with their hands.
00:08 They didn't just buy the car off a lot.
00:11 I look for a car or a person that spent a lot of time
00:14 hand crafting that piece.
00:16 (upbeat music)
00:18 - We're here in Detroit for the Hot Wheels Legends Tour.
00:29 We're here to judge the finalists
00:31 for the SEMA show later this year.
00:33 - So I'm looking for something really creative,
00:36 something hand built,
00:38 just something that stands out and is unique.
00:40 Getting in there, getting dirty, doing the work yourself.
00:44 Anybody can go and buy any car,
00:46 but it's making that car your own
00:48 and making it part of your family.
00:50 - Today what I'm looking for is someone
00:53 that actually spent a lot of time in their garage.
00:55 I think it really has to be unique.
00:57 That's the main thing.
00:59 What's different about it
01:00 from everything else that's out there?
01:02 (upbeat music)
01:05 - Hi, my name is Paul Jurowicz.
01:12 This is our 1957 customized Studebaker.
01:15 It was built at home in our two car garage,
01:19 all hand fabricated out of steel.
01:21 The car consists of a Lincoln modular 4.6 liter V8 motor,
01:25 Jaguar rear suspension, 96 Corvette front suspension.
01:29 The hood itself is out of a '60 Thunderbird.
01:31 The rear portion of the car is a 1963 Corvair.
01:35 The car itself was almost scaled up
01:38 from the original one of 18 Hot Wheels,
01:40 except this is the convertible version of it.
01:42 Just something that never seemed to have been done before.
01:45 So we just decided to go ahead and do it.
01:47 (upbeat music)
01:51 (upbeat music)
01:53 - My name is Ernie Miyamoto.
01:56 This is my 1972 VW Super Beetle
01:59 with a 572 Creek motor in it.
02:00 It was sitting in someone's backyard.
02:02 It was beat up, no motor, needed paint,
02:05 motor transplant, and just kind of went over everything
02:08 on it a little bit.
02:09 My Super Beetle's kind of like a Hot Wheels
02:10 'cause it's unique.
02:12 It's a little bit over the top with the body flip in,
02:14 the windup key on the back.
02:15 So, you know, there's a switch to turn it on
02:17 and it spins as it goes down the road.
02:19 - Hi, my name is Scott Wiley,
02:20 and I'm here today with a car I call the Space Liner.
02:24 This concept started late '60s, early '70s.
02:26 My favorite Hot Wheels car growing up
02:28 was called Splittin' Image,
02:29 and it had a double bubble top.
02:31 It was my favorite Hot Wheels car.
02:32 I think it was heavier
02:33 because it would go down the track faster
02:35 and it would hit the little parachute and everything.
02:36 So I thought, someday I want a bubble top car.
02:39 I found a guy in Fort Lauderdale
02:41 that makes custom canopies for jets and airplanes.
02:44 And these are actually off of an RV-8 experimental aircraft.
02:47 And he's the one that actually did the final paint.
02:49 He did the fabrication of the tops
02:51 and he kind of put it all together for me.
02:53 And so, yep, this is my version of a Hot Wheels car.
02:56 (upbeat music)
02:58 - My name is Charlie Speece,
03:06 and we're here supporting the Gambler 500.
03:08 - $500 cars, 500 mile adventures, mostly off-road.
03:12 - Yeah, you try to build the best car you can
03:15 with the least amount of money,
03:16 'cause you're gonna destroy it by the end of the race.
03:18 - My most ridiculous modification would have to be no roof.
03:21 It's a 2004 Ford Taurus.
03:23 I got T-boned twice.
03:25 It was my daily driver,
03:26 and I figured what better way to send it off to Valhalla
03:28 than its Gambler glory.
03:30 (upbeat music)
03:32 - This is an incredible city.
03:35 Fed a blast so far today.
03:36 - Had a ton of great cars out here.
03:38 Really impressive.
03:39 - The turnout too was awesome.
03:41 I mean, this is some of the first good weather
03:42 we've had this year.
03:43 And just from 7.30 this morning,
03:46 seeing the throngs of people and the kids.
03:48 - Yeah, it did stop. - Families coming.
03:49 Yeah, it didn't stop. - So many different,
03:51 I mean, different makes, models.
03:52 I mean, there was some really cool stuff.
03:54 So what are some of the cars
03:55 that you guys really gravitated towards today?
03:58 - It was pretty rad to see a street-legal stool
04:01 that you could ride around on.
04:02 And we're talking about one of the most unique things
04:04 that you could see,
04:05 definitely riding down the street on a stool.
04:07 - Let's talk about school.
04:09 - Oh yeah, the school bus was super cool.
04:11 And there was a line to see that school bus all day long.
04:16 - Fabricator was the gentleman that had discovered the van
04:20 traveling back from Georgia, I think it was.
04:22 The gentleman is in a wheelchair
04:24 and he's done all this work on his own.
04:27 - He's got nitrous in it too
04:28 and he said the purge valve was right there.
04:29 So at night, it's all lit up so it purges out.
04:32 - From the stance of the vehicle
04:34 to the Cadillac tail light.
04:37 - Yeah, the tail light, that was cool.
04:39 I mean, the whole thing just makes a perfect sort of design.
04:43 - Ready, up or going up?
04:44 One, two, three.
04:46 - Hot Wheels!
04:47 (upbeat music)
04:49 - I wanna thank Mobile One, one of our sponsors,
05:01 obviously Walmart for hosting us here.
05:03 Mechanicsware, Dickies and Xbox and Microsoft,
05:06 they help us put this together.
05:08 - Fierce competition out here today.
05:10 We had a ton of really well-built, really cool,
05:14 compelling, creative, garage-spirit, authentic vehicles.
05:17 So our decision today was really difficult.
05:20 In the end, the winner is Paul Jurowicz
05:23 with the '57 Dream Roadster.
05:25 (audience applauding)
05:27 - 15 years total in the build.
05:28 The car is consisting of all steel panels
05:30 that have been welded on.
05:32 Paint color itself is a house of color, Sunrise Pearl,
05:35 with a gold pearl mid-coat and clear coat on top of that.
05:38 The wheels are specially made.
05:40 They're 20 by eight inch wheels
05:41 all the way around the vehicle.
05:43 The driveline itself consists of a NASCAR aluminum radiator,
05:46 a four cam Lincoln modular V8 motor
05:49 with a handmade one-off intake manifold
05:51 set to run a three barrel Demon carburetor.
05:54 Some of the highlights of the interior
05:56 are the Nardi wood steering wheel,
05:58 the custom restored Studebaker GT gauges,
06:01 and the shifter knob,
06:02 which is actually part of a wine bottle stop.
06:05 - Well, I've seen more people taking pictures of it today
06:07 than I would have ever imagined.
06:09 Just to have an opportunity to do this
06:11 is just over the moon, really, so.
06:13 - Just wanna say thank you to everyone that showed up.
06:17 Thank you for supporting our Hot Wheels,
06:19 and we'll see you again soon.
