Recipe for Beating Georgia Football
Transcript
00:00 I got a recipe.
00:01 I wanted to kick Murray off to talk about this recipe.
00:05 This recipe for success against Georgia defensively.
00:08 - What do you got, chef?
00:09 - Okay.
00:10 One, point one,
00:13 historic talent slash offensive output.
00:18 Okay, that's what you gotta have.
00:20 All right, it's either that or the actual recipe.
00:24 So if you don't have like great historic talent, all right,
00:28 a la 2021 Alabama offense,
00:32 a la historic output 2019 LSU, okay, and historic talent.
00:37 If you don't have that, you're in trouble
00:41 or you gotta do this, right?
00:42 I've seen a lot of teams do this.
00:44 I don't care how you do it, but you have to, have to.
00:49 I mean, dump the kitchen sink and find a way to rush
00:53 for at, near or about four yards of carry.
00:56 You don't have to be super explosive,
00:58 but you have to be diligent and willing
01:00 to just run your head against the brick wall.
01:02 'Cause that's what it is.
01:03 It feels like a brick wall.
01:04 You feel like you're just mundane activities,
01:07 watching paint dry, all right?
01:08 But you really gotta do it.
01:10 You gotta, whether it be through tempo runs,
01:12 whether it be through unique motions,
01:15 whether it be through extensions of the run game,
01:17 you have got to, got to, got to find a way to average
01:21 about four yards of carry.
01:23 If you can do that, if you can remain balanced,
01:25 you'll not only be able to convert the change,
01:28 live in the third mediums, do all that good stuff.
01:29 But I think the key to winning and beating Georgia,
01:32 honestly, is keeping their offense off the field.
01:35 A lot of people don't talk about that
01:36 'cause they tend to lean on you a good bit as an offense.
01:39 So you gotta keep them off the field.
01:41 The number two point in this recipe,
01:43 gotta find ways to get chunk plays, all right?
01:45 'Cause if you're gonna try to 10, 11, 12, 13 play drive
01:49 these guys, you're only gonna do that maybe once, all right?
01:52 The history tells me that they're gonna force you
01:54 into a negative play at some point the rest of the drives.
01:57 Every single team that's tried to march it on Georgia,
02:00 and that's their game plan,
02:02 we're gonna have five marches, all right?
02:04 It's Kentucky, and it's the only football team
02:06 in maybe Alabama that's been able to actually do it
02:09 and summon, I don't know, two or three of those drives.
02:12 The other time, you're gonna fail, all right?
02:14 You're gonna end up punting after five plays
02:16 or getting into a third and long, getting up a sack,
02:18 having a false start, whatever, all right?
02:20 So you have to be able to find a chunk play.
02:23 Whether that be through a back shoulder fade,
02:25 or whether that be through wheels, right?
02:28 Slanting wheels like Florida did several years ago,
02:30 or whether that be through the quarterback draw,
02:32 whatever it is, however it is,
02:34 you have to find ways to get chunk plays,
02:37 20, 25 yarders, to where we can actually
02:40 flip field position and have an opportunity to punch it in.
02:43 That being said, once chunk plays happen,
02:45 you have to capitalize.
02:46 That's now one of your only scoring drives
02:48 that you're gonna get.
02:49 You're not gonna have a ton of opportunities
02:50 against Georgia, you're not, all right?
02:52 So once a chunk play happens,
02:54 you have to capitalize on this.
02:56 You gotta have winners saved for these opportunities as well
02:59 as an offensive coordinator.
03:00 You can't empty the clip.
03:01 Once you start getting some momentum
03:05 against Georgia's defense, you've got to go for the neck.
03:08 You have to immediately go for kill shots.
03:10 And you have to be selective.
03:12 Last final point, you have to be selective with the pace.
03:14 As soon as big plays happen for you,
03:16 as soon as momentum plays happen for you,
03:18 we gotta get right back on the ball,
03:20 and actually maybe tempo run, okay?
03:23 The teams that actually have somewhat success
03:25 running the football, they catch Georgia by surprise,
03:27 misalignments, whatever, because they're so gap sound
03:30 that if you just line up and play football,
03:33 you're not gonna beat 'em.
03:33 They're gonna punch your lights out.
03:35 You have to, have to gas out this defense
03:38 while protecting yours on the other side of football.
03:40 That's the recipe.
03:41 And whether it be Georgia Tech,
03:44 whether it be Kent State had a good game plan
03:47 against 'em a couple years ago,
03:49 whoever it be, whether you be outmanned or whatever,
03:52 if you wanna have success against this Georgia defense,
03:54 those are the recipes.
03:55 You gotta be able to be willing to run the football,
03:57 not super explosive, you gotta be willing to do it,
03:59 and you gotta be able to get chunk plays,
04:01 and you gotta build on momentum.
04:02 - You also have to let Georgia shoot itself in the foot
04:05 at least once or twice.
04:06 - Correct.
04:07 - You go to that Kent State game,
04:07 Ladd-McCunkey, Moffett-Punt, Ohio State,
04:10 the last time Georgia nearly lost,
04:11 Stetson-Ment had an interception, things like that,
04:13 turnovers in the game where you can come close to being,
04:16 otherwise, I don't think you have a chance
04:17 even doing all that stuff.
04:18 - No.
04:19 We also didn't give a shout out to prize pick,
