00:00 This gold rush town used to be one of the most vibrant, multicultural and wealthy places
00:07 on earth.
00:08 It's going down the gurgler at a very fast rate.
00:10 Today, Maryborough in regional Victoria is one of the whitest and most disadvantaged
00:16 towns in Australia and is ageing fast.
00:19 It is homogenous, very, very white.
00:22 It's a problem keeping our younger generation and the younger generation of the future.
00:26 Staff wanted, staff wanted, staff wanted.
00:29 So, in a unique social experiment, eight households have been invited to leave their city lives
00:36 behind.
00:37 Could they breathe new life into the town and the move be life changing for them?
00:44 I'll be working as a disability support worker.
00:47 I really enjoy looking after people.
00:50 I'm just ready to get up there and throw myself in the drink club.
00:53 I guess I'm excited man.
00:55 Moving to the regional area is going more close to the nature.
00:58 It's living like in heaven.
01:00 I'm excited.
01:01 It's the right time for me to get back into the kitchen.
01:04 It's our opportunity and we're going to take it.
01:06 A council backed pilot project that could show the way for struggling towns right across
01:11 Australia.
01:12 You'll end up with towns like this becoming aged care homes with no one left to look after
01:17 the old people.
01:18 What sort of country is that?
01:19 But not all the locals are convinced.
01:22 Certain nationalities cause a lot of trouble.
01:24 I love other cultures.
01:26 Only if they want to become Australians.
01:28 With the town's future at stake and the rest of the country looking on.
01:33 We as a community can metaphorically put our arms around you.
01:37 Will the experiment work?
01:39 This could be completely life changing.
01:41 Or we could completely stuff it up.
01:44 People are friendly but not always accepting of something that's different.
01:48 I think you're mad coming here because there's nothing here.
01:51 Like schnitzels coming out of our asses.
01:54 What on life change in small towns.
01:57 I don't know what he said.
01:59 For sure it wasn't good.
02:05 There's not much difference between them and us.
02:08 I'm so happy to be here.
02:10 When you're willing to accept that and embrace it, magic happens.
02:14 I love it.
02:15 And I love her too.
02:17 Eight households from the city, three months and one small Australian regional town.
