00:10 A Filipino World War II veteran on his 107th birthday.
00:16 Today I would like to share with you his story.
00:22 Mr. O'Callaghan enlisted in the Philippine scouts in 1941,
00:27 joining them as they heroically resisted the Japanese invasion.
00:31 The valiant stand of the Philippine scouts is credited for
00:34 having saved Australia and New Zealand from invasion.
00:38 These two countries would then become the staging point from which
00:42 General Douglas MacArthur would launch his island hopping campaign,
00:46 leading to his waiting ashore at Leyte in mid October 1945.
00:51 Thereby making good on his famous promise, I shall return.
00:55 And returning from a combat mission is worthy of celebration.
00:59 So if it seems like I'm on 10 with energy, it's because I am,
01:04 knowing the sacrifice of the fallen and
01:06 those of us collected here today who made it back.
01:10 >> On this occasion, we pay tribute to the valor, sacrifice, and
01:17 unwavering commitment of Filipino and
01:19 American veterans who served both our nations with great distinction.
