00:00 I am Pragya and I bring to you excerpts from the current issue of Outlook, titled India
00:05 that is Bharat.
00:06 It looks at the ongoing state elections as a critical test of unity between the Congress
00:11 and its allies in the India coalition and whether the opposition combined can take on
00:17 the might of the BJP in the elections 2024.
00:21 The editorial intro is titled, It is time to vote.
00:25 What would you like your country to be named India or Bharat?
00:28 The debate was triggered by the invites for the G20 dinner hosted by President Draupadi
00:34 Murmu in the name of President of Bharat.
00:37 Already the NCRT has suggested changing the name India to Bharat in school textbooks.
00:43 But what will such a change entail?
00:44 Will it be accepted by all citizens?
00:48 What will be the financial cost of such a change?
00:51 Many experts believe that the Union government got worked up by the emergence of the new
00:56 opposition coalition with the acronym India, Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance
01:02 and more so as state elections were round the corner as well as the Lok Sabha elections
01:07 in 2024 and tried to counter this alliance by suggesting Bharat as the country's official
01:13 name.
01:14 We examined the two issues emanating from this controversy, the India that is Bharat
01:19 discourse and more importantly, the ongoing elections in five states.
01:24 For instance, in Madhya Pradesh, the key vote bank that both the BJP as well as the India
01:30 Alliance is trying to covet is the Adivasi community.
01:33 In Rajasthan, we look at how caste and community politics have always decided the winner.
01:39 Though issues related to water, electricity and roads are discussed after the elections,
01:45 the winner always forgets these critical concerns.
01:48 In Telangana, unemployment is a burning issue and thousands of people have been protesting
01:53 on the streets.
01:55 But it will not be easy for the India Alliance to take on a confident BJP.
02:00 That's because the country's experience with such a rainbow coalition government has been
02:05 bad.
02:06 But many experts still believe that the India Alliance has been able to set the electoral
02:12 tone to shape the political narrative.
02:14 It remains to be seen whether India or Bharat will win the hearts of the people of the nation.
02:21 For this and more, read the current issue of Outlook.
