Hundreds gather in Sydney CBD for Remembrance Day

Hundreds of people gathered in Sydney's CBD today to honour the Australian service people who have died serving their country.

00:00 At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, World War I officially came
00:08 to an end as an armistice was signed between Germany and the Allied powers.
00:13 105 years on, a sea of people have gathered here in Martin Place with red poppies pinned
00:19 to their shirts to honour the Australian servicemen and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice
00:25 serving their country.
00:26 A host of speeches and wreath laying were followed by the sounds of the last post which
00:31 echoed through the city as the streets fell silent.
00:35 At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.
00:42 Lest we forget.
00:45 And we would encourage particularly our younger people to learn about the sacrifice of our
01:02 servicemen and women so that this is a commemoration that will continue into the future.
01:08 And we're very humbled by the fact that so many young people do attend these ceremonies.
01:13 The New South Wales Premier and the Environment Minister were among the 500 strong crowd that
01:18 gathered here in Sydney Centre.
01:21 Similar ceremonies have been occurring across the Commonwealth today as countries each honour
01:26 their own fallen soldiers.
