00:58 Hello, dear.
01:00 Welcome to my modest home.
01:02 And what can I do for you?
01:04 Oh, yes.
01:05 I forgot.
01:06 I invited you here to answer in one fell swoop
01:09 all the questions you've been bugging me about popular music.
01:13 And of course, you came to the right place,
01:18 because they don't call me Pops Von Drake for nothing.
01:22 They got to pay me.
01:23 Come in and sit down, and I'm going to play for you
01:26 several hundred of the latest hit songs of the past 60 years,
01:30 which naturally I wrote myself.
01:33 Around the turn of the century, I was a starving musician,
01:37 and I was down to my last Rudebaker.
01:39 And anybody knows what that means.
01:41 I was dressed in rags all the time.
01:45 Even my clothes was in rags.
01:47 And I said to myself, that's it.
01:50 I will call my new syncopation rag time.
01:55 Now, naturally, there were many cheap imitations of my rag
01:58 time.
01:59 There was Ludwig's Ragtime Band.
02:02 And then there was Ragtime Cowboy Ludwig.
02:07 And then there was the Dishpan Rag.
02:08 And many others, which shall be nameless,
02:13 because I can't remember what they are.
02:15 But now, I'm going to give you a demonstration of my now
02:18 famous Rudebaker rag.
02:20 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:23 [SINGING]
02:26 Everybody's ragging to the Rudebaker,
02:30 ragging to the Rudebaker.
02:32 'Cause they know it's harder than a hot potato,
02:35 harder than a hot potato.
02:37 It's got a new beat.
02:39 It's called a two beat.
02:42 Radishes and onions are getting corns and bunions,
02:44 ragging to the Rudebaker rag.
02:47 Brussels sprouts are wearing out their new collages,
02:51 dancing with the summer squashes.
02:53 Let us do it.
02:55 And asparagus and limes, they're becoming real ragtimers.
02:58 Boy, the numbers.
03:00 Broccoli and celery and cool cucumbers.
03:03 Love that little syncopator.
03:04 Least you like an elevator at hot Rudebaker rag.
03:07 [MUSIC PLAYING]
03:11 [SINGING]
03:14 [MUSIC PLAYING]
03:18 Boy, the numbers.
03:32 Broccoli and celery and cool cucumbers.
03:34 Love that little syncopator.
03:36 Least you like an elevator.
03:38 Red hot Rudebaker, red hot Rudebaker,
03:43 red hot Rudebaker rag.
03:45 Red hot.
03:50 Popularity is fickle.
03:55 And soon my ragtime was worn to shreds.
03:57 And the people shouted, Ludwig, pay your bills.
04:00 No, that isn't what they said.
04:01 That was my laundry man who said that.
04:03 But I'm trying to remember.
04:04 Now, let's see what they said.
04:05 Oh, yes.
04:06 They said, Ludwig, give us a new sound in popular music.
04:10 So I gave them a new sound.
04:13 It was the roaring '20s, the days of raccoon coats
04:16 and the sheiks and the flappers and the tin lizzies.
04:19 The wireless was replacing the gramophone.
04:22 You know something, I don't know why they called it a wireless.
04:24 Because look at all those wires there.
04:27 Some not called it a wireless.
04:28 Maybe that's why they changed the name to radio,
04:30 which is really O-E-D-A spelled backwards.
04:33 I happened at the time to be below the Mason Dixon line,
04:39 you see.
04:39 And Mr. Dixon came up to me and he said,
04:42 Mr. Von Drake, sir, you all had just better
04:44 put old Dixie on the map.
04:46 I said to myself, little old Ludwig, sir, I said,
04:52 it's up to you all.
04:54 So I wrote "Louisville Ludwig," a song about me, naturally.
04:58 But to protect the innocent, me, I changed the name
05:05 to Charleston Charlie.
05:06 [HUMMING]
05:09 [HUMMING]
05:12 Who's our campus dreamboat?
05:15 Ooh, ooh, ooh.
05:17 Charleston Charlie, oh, Charleston Charlie's our boy.
05:20 Oh, gee, oh joy.
05:21 He's got it in the dance.
05:25 Ooh, ooh.
05:26 He's so handsome, oh, Charleston Charlie's our guy.
05:30 Oh, me, oh my.
05:31 He's slick, he's smooth, he's got several friends.
05:36 He's romancy, talk so fancy.
05:39 The answer to a flapper's prayer.
05:41 All the girls go, go, go.
05:45 Ooh, ooh, ooh.
05:46 When you roll your Valentino eyes.
05:49 Ooh, ooh.
05:51 Charleston Charlie, oh, Charleston Charlie,
05:53 it's a poo-poo, a poo-poo, a you.
05:56 [MUSIC PLAYING]
06:01 [MUSIC PLAYING]
06:04 Poo-poo-pidoo, poo-poo-pidoo-doo.
06:16 He's slick, he's smooth, he's got several friends.
06:21 He's romancy, talk so fancy.
06:23 The answer to a flapper's prayer.
06:26 All the girls go, go, go.
06:29 Ooh, ooh.
06:31 When you roll your Valentino eyes.
06:34 Ooh, ooh.
06:36 Charleston Charlie, oh, Charleston Charlie,
06:38 it's a poo-poo, a poo-poo, a you.
06:43 A poo-poo-pidoo, a poo-poo-pidoo-doo.
06:45 [MUSIC PLAYING]
06:53 A poo-poo-pidoo, a poo-poo-pidoo-doo.
06:57 Charleston, Charleston, Charleston.
07:00 Ha, ha, ha.
07:01 Oh, boy, am I poo-poo-padooped.
07:03 Ooh.
07:05 Things really began to get rough.
07:07 We had a depression.
07:09 Wall Street laid an egg.
07:11 It was more like an omelet.
07:13 And the roaring '20s went out with a peep.
07:16 But was Von Drake depressed?
07:18 You can bet your boots I was, because all my money
07:21 was lost in debt, and I couldn't stand for it.
07:24 What am I saying?
07:25 I wasn't depressed.
07:26 Not on your life, because I knew that the world was waiting
07:29 for me, Ludwig Von Drake, to pull
07:31 the world out of depression.
07:33 And I pulled them out of depression
07:35 into complete poverty, single-handed.
07:39 And so there I was, down to my last nickel.
07:42 I ate it.
07:43 No, what am I saying?
07:44 I went into a $0.05 and $0.10 store,
07:46 feeling like a million dollars, and I bought myself a piano.
07:49 And it was on this noble instrument
07:51 that I modestly wrote my greatest forever remembered hit.
07:55 [PLAYING PIANO]
07:58 Soon, every band in the nation picked it up and threw it out.
08:00 Wait a second.
08:01 What am I saying?
08:02 They didn't throw it out.
08:03 They started to play it.
08:05 Everybody was playing it.
08:07 [PLAYING PIANO]
08:11 (SINGING) Although I dropped $100,000 in the market, baby,
08:17 I found a million dollars in your smile.
08:20 Yes, sir, stocks are crashing every day.
08:24 Banks are failing, too.
08:26 But who cares if those skies are gray, long as I have you dear?
08:31 Once I was a millionaire on margin.
08:35 Now I'm singing in the bread line all the while.
08:40 Although I dropped $100,000 in the market, baby,
08:45 I found a million dollars in your smile.
08:49 Yes, sir, there I was, sitting on top of my lonely flagpole,
08:54 thinking of the money I lost.
08:56 The factory was closed, and who knew when we'd start
08:59 manufacturing running bars again?
09:02 How could I let a smile be my umbrella when it was
09:04 stormy weather all the time?
09:07 Although potatoes were cheaper, now was definitely
09:10 not the time to fall in love.
09:12 And then I spied you, selling apples on the corner.
09:17 Delicious!
09:18 And you looked up at me and smiled.
09:21 And the sun came shining through.
09:24 And I slipped down from my pole because I
09:27 knew it was pointless.
09:29 Although I dropped $100,000 in the market, baby,
09:35 I found a million dollars in your smile.
09:38 I'm happy.
09:40 I found a million dollars in your smile.
09:43 You betcha.
09:44 I found a million dollars in your smile.
09:48 Yes, sir!
09:52 For my next unforgettable invention,
09:58 I electrified the megaphone and called it a microfooey--
10:02 a microphone.
10:03 And for this, I created a singer called a crooner.
10:07 And for him, I composed a new type of song, which I
10:11 called "The Love Ballad."
10:14 Boo-boo-boo-boo-boo!
10:15 [MUSIC - THE LOVE BALLAD, "THE LOVE BALLAD"]
10:16 I'm blue for you.
10:23 Boo-boo-boo-boo-boo.
10:26 What can I do?
10:28 Boo-boo-boo-boo-boo-boo-boo.
10:31 You found someone new.
10:33 You said we were through.
10:35 And that's why I'm blue for you.
10:39 Right from the start, you played a part.
10:52 I wasn't smart.
10:54 You broke my heart.
10:57 You upset my apple cart.
11:03 Now we're far apart, sweetheart.
11:08 When you said adieu, you left without a clue.
11:26 And that's why I'm blue for you.
11:31 [MUSIC - THE LOVE BALLAD, "THE LOVE BALLAD"]
11:32 While everyone was cutting boo-boo records, I was
11:40 cutting out paper dolls.
11:42 And by sheer accident--
11:43 ha, ha, ha, sheer accident--
11:46 ooh, I created these dolls, the perfect group to introduce
11:51 my new rhythm, boogie-woogie.
11:53 [MUSIC - THE LOVE BALLAD, "THE LOVE BALLAD"]
11:55 Da, da, da, da.
11:56 Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, ma.

13:51 -Oh, will you excuse me?
14:15 I was about to watch my favorite musical program of a
14:17 higher level, "The Von Drake Hour." They are featuring some
14:21 of my old time tunes.
14:23 That would be last week's hits.
14:25 Ah, there it is now, with Jackie Babylon and
14:27 "The Babylonians." Oh, boy, a dare swinging group.
14:31 Come on, be my guest.
14:32 This is pay TV.
14:33 Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
