00:00 Well, folks, I'm going to be signing
00:03 the presidential memorandum in just a minute here
00:06 to establish the first-ever White House initiative
00:09 on women's health research.
00:10 It's an effort made possible by Jill,
00:14 who has long championed women's health,
00:16 and Jen Klein, Dr. Missouri, Maria Shriver, and others.
00:21 Because the fact is that it requires all of government --
00:25 not just NIH, but HHS, the VA, Defense Department,
00:30 and every agency in the government
00:32 having anything to do with health --
00:34 requires them to come up with a report to me --
00:38 for me that lays out what they can do collectively
00:42 to improve women's health.
00:43 We'll make up more than half the population,
00:46 but for too long, they've been underrepresented
00:49 when it comes to health research
00:50 and the money spent on that research.
00:52 That's going to change today.
00:54 So, this -- signing this, I'm setting up this group
00:58 that, within 45 days, all the government agencies
01:01 that have anything to do with health
01:02 have to report on exactly what they're doing now
01:05 with regard to women's health
01:07 and the suggestions they may have on how to deal with it.
01:10 So, let me now sign this and make it official
01:13 and then yield to Jill.
01:14 Well, Jill, let me yield to you first.
01:17 >> Dr. Klein, M.D., President, White House
01:18 and White House Staff: Thank you.
01:19 I just want to say, Maria, I am so grateful to you
01:23 for bringing this to our attention,
01:25 and it's your leadership
01:26 that's really going to make the difference
01:28 and has made the difference already.
01:30 And also, thank you, Carolyn, for, you know,
01:33 your involvement and your willingness to lead this effort.
01:36 And, you know, Maria, after you came a couple months ago
01:41 and then I spoke to Joe, and I have to say,
01:44 one of the things that I love most about Joe is,
01:47 you know, you take something to him and he listens.
01:50 And he did listen to us and that's --
01:53 and it's resulted in this memorandum.
01:55 So, thank you, Joe.
01:57 >> All right. >> We appreciate this.
01:59 And women deserve better.
02:01 And now we're going to get it. So, thank you.
02:05 >> You don't have to thank me. I didn't realize how --
02:08 how much incongruity there was and how embellished it was.
02:11 So, God willing, we're going to solve that.
02:13 All right.
02:20 (Applause.)
02:38 With regard to a potential shutdown,
02:40 I understand that the new Speaker of the House
02:43 has a proposal that's being negotiated
02:45 with the minority leader of the House
02:48 and Senator Schumer and the Republican leader
02:53 are also talking about it.
02:55 I don't know what the outcome is going to be.
02:56 Apparently, there's a meeting today at 4 or 5 o'clock
02:59 on the Rules Committee. And we'll see what happens.
03:03 >> Would you veto the latter CR?
03:05 >> I'm not going to make a judgment
03:08 what I'd veto, what I'd sign.
03:10 But let's wait and see what they come up with.
03:13 >> Sir, any specific concerns about the hospitals in Gaza,
03:18 sir? Have you urged Israel to take any specific precautions
03:23 on the hospitals in Gaza?
03:24 >> Thank you. Thank you very much.
03:28 >> The President's going to answer it, guys.
03:31 >> The hospital in Gaza.
03:32 >> The hospital in Gaza.
03:33 Have you expressed any specific concerns to Israel on that, sir?
03:36 >> Well, you know I have not been reluctant
03:40 in expressing my concerns what's going on.
03:43 And it's my hope and expectation
03:46 that there will be less intrusive action
03:54 relative to the hospital.
03:55 We're in contact with the Israelis.
03:59 Also, there is an effort to take this pause
04:04 to deal with the release of prisoners.
04:06 And that's being negotiated as well with the Qataris
04:10 that are engaged.
04:11 And so I remain somewhat hopeful.
04:14 But the hospital must be protected.
04:18 >> And any --
04:19 >> All right, guys. Thanks a lot.
