00:00 How would you define success with your meeting
00:02 with President Xi?
00:03 >> The President: To get back on a normal course
00:06 of corresponding, being able to pick up the phone
00:08 and talk to one another if there's a crisis,
00:10 being able to make sure our militaries
00:12 still have contact with one another.
00:14 We can't take -- as I told you,
00:18 we're not trying to decouple from China.
00:22 But what we're trying to do is change the relationship
00:26 for the better.
00:28 From my perspective, if, in fact, the Chinese people
00:32 who are in trouble right now economically --
00:35 if the average homeowner or the homeowner --
00:37 if the average citizen in China
00:39 was able to have a decent-paying job,
00:41 that benefits them and it benefits all of us.
00:44 But I'm not going to continue to sustain the support
00:47 for positions where, if we want to invest in China,
00:50 we have to turn over all our trade secrets.
00:51 >> The Press: Can you address the hostages directly
00:53 and give them a message of hope and resilience
00:55 in these troubling times?
00:56 >> The President: Yes, I can. I've been talking with --
00:58 people involved every single day.
01:01 I believe it's going to happen,
01:02 but I don't want to get into detail.
01:04 >> What's your message for the families?
01:06 >> Hang in there. We're coming.
01:08 >> Will you sign the CR?
01:09 >> Mr. President, is it reported --
01:13 >> What do you like about it? >> -- that Israel and Hamas
01:15 are close to a deal for the release of 70 of the hostages?
01:19 Is there anything you can add to that?
01:21 >> No. Thank you.
01:22 >> Will you sign the CR?
