00:00 Hey UTV drivers Kevin Ray here we've got another rig for trail 22 review a
00:10 special one today the Polaris general XP 1000 trailhead edition this is brand new
00:20 for 2022 and we've got it
00:29 ok so what's special for this trailhead edition
00:34 you're getting things like the front bumper the synthetic 4500 pound winch
00:45 special pro armor 30 inch tires the two-tone interior and this awesome
00:58 bed rack system with a lock and ride nothing changes on the bed it's still a
01:07 hydraulic dump it still has the 600 pound capacity you just get the added
01:16 benefit of a shelf and the molly strap system it's really cool up front you get
01:28 the LED 11 inch pro armor light bar rear view mirror LED lights all the way
01:37 around we come down below high clearance control arms front and rear and if I can
01:44 sneak in here you get the Walker Evans velocity series adjustable suspension
01:54 maybe we can see this side a little bit better there you go front and rear you
02:04 can see the adjustments are done right here for the dampening it's just
02:08 compression no rebound and again the high clearance control arms in the rear
02:15 this is a limited edition trailhead package
02:23 that does come with the 3d embossed and you can feel it it's raised vinyl
02:30 graphics this is Topo from an actual trail in Arizona just north of Phoenix
02:37 you get the metallic blue paint on the body the rest of the body which is very
02:44 handsome in person I don't know if it translates to the camera very well it is
02:50 matte and it does have a metallic flake in it inside you're going to get things
02:59 like ride command and a four speaker Rockford Fosgate sound system and the
03:11 footwells on each side and behind your head each speaker is about 50 watts I
03:18 believe and it's all controlled from the infotainment ride command screen all
03:27 right so enough chit-chat what do you say we go for a drive let's do it
03:32 it's at the trail this is trail marker 22 at wind rock OHV park in Oliver
03:41 Springs Tennessee same trail we always do
03:46 we're in the 2022 Polaris general XP 1000 trailhead edition
03:53 it's got a 999 CC engine parallel twin pro star naturally aspirated Polaris
04:04 says it pumps out about a hundred horsepower I believe it
04:15 throttle response is pretty good
04:20 it's a little twitchy but manageable there are no modes to change it
04:31 or tame it they found a reasonable middle ground
04:40 oh it's sloppy today we've had a lot of rain recently so this
04:46 video might be a little interesting
04:50 jumping from the engine into the transmission
05:02 got the normal EVT which is a CVT Polaris
05:08 own CVT transmission found on all XP 1000 models across the
05:14 lineup it comes with I don't know if you guys can see this or not comes with a
05:20 transfer case that splits power all the way down to turf mode so right now we're
05:24 in turf mode which is essentially one wheel drive great for driving around the
05:29 driveway doing work around the yard you're not going to tear anything up
05:34 we'll swap it into four-wheel drive you get two-wheel drive after turf mode
05:39 which essentially locks the rear axle
05:44 and then four-wheel drive on top of that four-wheel drive isn't really four-wheel
05:49 drive they call it all-wheel drive at any given point you've got three tires
05:55 turning it tries to do
06:02 traction control
06:04 I'd say it succeeds all right so big hill put it in low I don't
06:13 feel like changing a belt
06:16 it's nice and sloppy today I can feel the front end
06:23 trying to grab traction between the two tires and four-wheel drive
06:28 and what I mean by that is the steering will get stiff when they both try to
06:36 lock up and grab at the same time
06:39 big puddle
06:45 all right a little rock garden our first one we'll climb it with ease
07:03 these 30-inch pro armor tires
07:11 do a fantastic job we've had them in some
07:17 Georgia hard pack this sloppy stuff Tennessee clay
07:26 all over and they really don't disappoint
07:33 you
07:35 these hill climbs are where the XP 1000 engine really shines you've got
07:54 tons of torque to make it up never left feeling like you can use a
07:59 little more power
08:02 I'm going to crank
08:06 the damping
08:09 all the way down to soft
08:14 because we had it on full hard
08:20 while we were at the track last week
08:25 sending it off big jumps
08:30 and it's beating me to death
08:36 in case you're wondering really does make a difference when you go from one
08:45 extreme of the clicker to the other there's not a lot of finite detail in
08:53 there but
08:56 hard does make it harder and soft doesn't make it softer
09:00 all right on our way let's go back into high gear
09:08 pick up the pace
09:21 all right so the general platform is a sport rec rig it's kind of like a
09:25 crossover dual sport if you will
09:29 it doesn't really excel at anything it's very similar to Yamaha r-max
09:38 or the can-am commander it gives you the utility of a bed the
09:45 utility of a hitch receiver but it still tries to
09:52 incorporate the sport suspension of a pure sport
09:57 machine it's a the walker ebon velocity shocks
10:01 that are on this machine it it's it's a perfect solution
10:08 for the trails that we have
10:12 in the east we're never seeing high speeds
10:16 but you know we still need that articulation that damping control
10:22 and that total suspension travel to tackle obstacles in the trail
10:30 and i think it does a fantastic job
10:37 both front and rear axles
10:42 do have anti-sway bars on them which did hurt this machine in the rti
10:50 test but out here on the trail it doesn't
10:53 seem to really affect it
10:58 so
11:01 general seems very well made
11:17 the interior the exterior it all oozes a premium feel and it better
11:25 this thing costs 28 000 almost 29 000 in its base form
11:33 you can bolt on factory accessories from there
11:39 i don't think this unit came with any factory accessories from polaris
11:47 i may be wrong if i am crucify me in the comments
11:53 i love to hear what you guys think and i love
11:57 to learn new things from
12:01 the folks that own these rigs and know every bolt on them
12:06 we only get to keep them for maybe a week or two
12:11 i never have the time to become intimate with them
12:14 we spend just enough time in them to set a good baseline
12:19 and learn how they feel on as many trails as we can get them on
12:24 but these aren't long-term test units you know we don't know how they'll
12:32 perform in two years
12:36 that being said the general is one of my favorite platforms
12:43 this is a two-seater but you can get it in a four-seater a true four-seater
12:49 and it still retains the utility bed in the back
12:52 it is a very long unit but
12:56 it gives you all the features of this rig with two more seats
13:01 and i really like that
13:04 power steering is just about perfect on this thing it is
13:14 it is power assist
13:17 as you're hitting the bumps and going over the rocks
13:22 it's going to help limit that bump that you know feedback in the
13:27 steering wheel just a little bit but you can still feel
13:30 what's going on no problem just helps limit fatigue
13:35 most side-by-sides and utvs have that now
13:40 that is one of the problems we've seen
13:44 i don't know if you guys caught that
13:47 but there's a rubber
13:53 mat that hangs out in there and anytime you press the accelerator
13:59 with a little bit of force it just flies out
14:02 i don't know if it's supposed to be clipped in or not but
14:06 it's run out a few times
14:10 so
14:13 all right let's get up here
14:20 find some rocks i don't like going through the mud because
14:28 i have to clean these
14:32 so i typically try to just go around
14:38 the rocks
14:41 oh we've had some water intrusion
14:57 but there are nice big drain holes it's probably why there was water intrusion
15:07 that being said the half doors on this thing are great
15:11 it really helps keep the mud outside and your body parts inside
15:20 the bucket seats are supremely bolstered they're just
15:32 ultra comfortable i could sit in this thing all day no problem
15:38 comes with a three-point
15:41 seat belt like you would find in an automobile but there are ways to
15:48 upgrade it to a four-point
15:51 i don't know why you would in a sport rank unit though
15:58 okay onward
16:02 i think i can face just ahead see how this thing handles its speed
16:08 tracks very straight direction it'll go
16:16 this is not like a normal utility rig
16:25 with the sport style suspension high clearance
16:28 control arms
16:31 you can pick up the pace quite a bit and it
16:35 just eats it up
16:38 awkwardly it does like to jump it's very well mannered in the air
16:44 stays pretty flat
16:47 unlike some of the other units we've tested that tend to nosedive
16:52 as long as you're on the throttle and unload that front suspension as
16:57 you're hitting the lip of the jump like
17:00 it uh soars through the air
17:05 all right rock field
17:09 i really like the way this thing feels
17:20 in the rocks more technical trail just kind of eats it up
17:24 steering wheel's a good size and i just soaked my face
17:28 it's got nice thumb rests
17:32 they're soft but still supportive
17:38 i like that this machine doesn't it tends not to bottom out
17:47 i don't know if it's got
17:50 damping that ramps up variable damping or variable coils or what but
17:58 compared to some other models with fox suspension
18:03 it seems to limit bottom bottoming out a little bit more than
18:09 those let's climb over the rock so this thing's got 13 and a half inches
18:16 of ground clearance
18:20 and climbing over that rock not even close
18:25 you've got the high clearance control arms
18:28 flat underbody lots of skid plates
18:34 and the big 30 inch tires all that culminates to uh basically being able to
18:39 drive over whatever you want
18:42 to do
18:45 all right here's our big rock crawling test
18:54 this one is unique in that not only
19:00 is it technical but it's also
19:04 in a stream which is
19:09 questionably legal in in the state that we're in
19:12 you gotta you gotta drive slowly try not to disturb the wildlife
19:21 but at the same time it makes all the rocks
19:26 the general has no problem navigating it
19:36 all right so general xp1000 trailhead
19:42 laris states that it's a uh a dry weight
19:51 1801 pounds which is pretty heavy for a utv on our scales on the
19:59 utv driver scales it weighed just to tick over that wet
20:03 1806 pounds
20:07 all that utility comes at the cost of more weight
20:13 but this is the perfect rig for extended trips
20:20 out to the backcountry
20:23 it's just got heaps of storage space ways to attach things
20:33 it's a great driveline powerful engine
20:37 if you're planning on multi-day trips
20:43 you can't beat this thing
20:48 oh it's just eating up this wet muddy trail no issues at all
21:01 so
21:03 all right so
21:08 as far as the infotainment system goes standard ride command
21:13 standard polaris ride command
21:16 you get all your gauges you get your gps you get your friend tracking system
21:23 you know radio everything that comes with right command
21:26 normally you get and then the trailhead edition
21:31 tacks on the stage three rocket plus gate sound system
21:38 and that means you're getting two speakers in the front footwells
21:42 two speakers behind your head each speaker is a six and a half inch
21:47 driver being pushed with 50 watts it gets loud it doesn't
21:55 get crazy loud like a big massive sound bar will but it
22:02 stays clear and you can definitely hear your music
22:08 over the relatively quiet engine exhaust
22:13 that was one of the things that we did not like about
22:16 the yamaha r max is how loud
22:20 the engine was
22:23 polaris has uh nailed that down with the general
22:27 you can hear it
22:30 it tickles your eardrums but it's not loud
22:34 and it won't leave your ears hurting at the end of the day like the rmx
22:38 can do
22:40 all right let's go back down to low
22:53 this is this has gotten
22:58 this has gotten a little crazy
23:02 for trail 22
23:06 i like it all right let's try that again
23:18 we'll take a slightly more left
23:23 and it's situations like that when you're trying to
23:32 hop up a rock stab or navigate a boulder field that the sway
23:38 bars really detract from
23:43 the performance level of this machine i think with better articulation
23:47 it wouldn't feel so squirrely used to being off camber but
23:51 for somebody brand new to be in that situation we were just in
23:57 i think it would
24:00 detract from the trip a little bit it would be scary
24:07 getting close to the end of the trail i just want to thank you for tuning in
24:13 watching our rides
24:16 i'm gonna say it's not fun because it's a lot of fun doing these
24:24 but it is work
24:29 so
24:32 let's go
24:35 so
24:38 so
24:41 so
24:58 so
