Fresh for the 2022 model year is Suzuki’s GSX-S1000GT+. Positioned as a classic sport-touring motorcycle, Suzuki stays true to its sportbike roots with a competitive, yet value-conclusions touring bike that favors sporty handling versus other new motorcycles in this segment.
The GSX-S1000GT+ is based on the overhauled 2022 GSX-S1000 naked bike which we tested earlier during the 2022 Suzuki GSX-S1000 Review. This particular model is designed for sport-touring. Think touring two-up, with a passenger, and limited luggage space. This motorcycle is powered by Suzuki’s tried and true 999cc inline four. The architecture of this engine configuration is based on the 2005 and ‘06 GSX-R1000. The actual cases, the pistons, and all of the internals have been tweaked and benefit from new manufacturing techniques. So, it’s not like Suzuki just went back 17 years and pulled engines out of those models and put them in this one.
The engines benefit from enhanced durability engineering that manufacturers learn after having built something for nearly two decades. The thing we like about this engine is just how much character it has. It’s a hoot to ride. It employs a pleasing air induction howl when you’re giving it a heavy dose of throttle. The exhaust note is nice and crisp, sounding pleasant, yet it’s not overly loud where it’s going to annoy your neighbors or other people in vehicles next to you.
This GSX-S continues to use Suzuki’s SDM-S combined engine power and throttle response maps, with ride-by-wire. A is the most aggressive, B is a little bit less than that, and C is the lowest power setting. Each letter represents a different throttle and/or engine power character...

00:02 Hey folks, we just got done riding
00:23 Suzuki's 2022 GSX-S1000 GT+.
00:28 This is Suzuki motor out of Hamamatsu, Japan's
00:31 top of the range sport touring bike
00:35 for the 2022 model year.
00:37 Now this vehicle is based off the overhauled
00:41 for 2022 GSX-S1000 naked bike,
00:46 which we tested earlier in the year.
00:50 This particular model though is designed for sport touring.
00:55 Think far away destinations,
00:57 think bringing a passenger,
00:59 think bringing some accoutrement with you
01:02 on the course of the ride.
01:04 Now this motorcycle is powered by Suzuki's tried and true
01:08 triple nine CCI four engine.
01:12 This engine configuration,
01:14 the architecture is designed off the 2005 and 2006 GSX-R1000.
01:19 Now the actual cases, the pistons,
01:23 all the engine internals, they have been tweaked
01:26 and they benefit from new manufacturing techniques.
01:29 So it's not like Suzuki just went back 17 years
01:32 and pulled the engines out of those things
01:34 and put them in here.
01:35 The engines are all new and they benefit
01:37 from enhanced engineering that you as a manufacturer
01:41 learn after you build something for 17 years.
01:44 Now the thing we really like about this engine
01:46 is just how much character it has.
01:49 This thing is just a hoot to ride.
01:52 It's got a really pleasing air induction howl
01:54 when you're giving it the beans.
01:56 The exhaust note is nice and sharp
01:58 and it sounds really pleasant,
01:59 but yet it's not overly loud
02:02 where it's gonna annoy your neighbors
02:03 or other people in vehicles next to you.
02:07 Now this engine benefits from ride by wire throttle
02:12 and Suzuki really has it dialed in.
02:14 They continue to use their SDMS combined engine power
02:19 and throttle response maps.
02:21 A is the most aggressive, B is a little bit less than that
02:24 and C is a little bit less than that.
02:27 And what each letter down means
02:29 is it's just a little bit smoother power,
02:31 a little bit less power output.
02:34 If you are a new rider and this was your first bike
02:36 and you wanted to get up to speed on this bike,
02:39 you'd ride it in power mode C
02:40 and the thing isn't gonna get away from you.
02:42 Conversely, if you're a seasoned pro
02:44 and you wanna give her the full beans,
02:46 A mode is the best for that.
02:48 Paired with the ride by wire throttle
02:51 is Suzuki's traction control system.
02:53 Suzuki offers five levels of traction control adjustment
02:56 plus off.
02:57 One gripe about this system is it's a little bit older
03:00 in terms of its engineering profile.
03:05 This vehicle, nor does any Suzuki vehicle,
03:07 benefit from an IMU when it comes to powering
03:11 both the traction control and the brakes.
03:15 Speaking of brakes, this thing has a really potent set
03:18 of triple disc hydraulic brakes.
03:20 The brakes do a really nice job of keeping speed in check,
03:23 even though this bike doesn't employ
03:25 a modern radial mount master cylinder,
03:28 the braking package on this motorcycle works very well.
03:31 Again, this bike does not include cornering ABS.
03:35 You need the situational and positional awareness
03:38 of an IMU chip.
03:40 It's the same type of chip inside your Apple smartphone
03:44 that gives it positional awareness.
03:46 So this motorcycle doesn't have that,
03:47 so it doesn't have cornering ABS.
03:50 Still, it does have fixed always on ABS
03:53 and it really works well.
03:55 I really wouldn't see a need for having a cornering ABS
03:58 just because this motorcycle works so good
04:01 with its conventional ABS.
04:05 Now, one of the hallmark features of these Suzuki sport bikes
04:09 and sport terrain bikes is just how comfortable they are.
04:12 I really like how I fit on this bike.
04:15 The windscreen's nice and tall.
04:17 The front fairing is nice and broad
04:19 and does a good job of pushing air up and around me.
04:23 For sure, it would have been nice
04:24 if this windscreen had a little bit of height adjustment,
04:27 but it's not that big of a deal.
04:29 If you're a really tall rider,
04:30 you can always opt for Suzuki's optional Touring windscreen,
04:34 which is $170 upcharge.
04:37 Another accessory that we would fit on this GSX-S1000GT+
04:42 is its $455 heated grips.
04:45 Yes, we wish this bike came equipped over you
04:47 with heated grips,
04:48 but that's just gonna push up the MSRP.
04:50 We would definitely spend $455 on that accessory.
04:55 Styling on this motorcycle.
04:56 I really like the styling on this motorcycle.
04:58 It looks very similar to a certain Japanese manufacturer's
05:03 supercharged motorcycles.
05:06 I like the angular bodywork.
05:08 I like the LED headlights.
05:11 These LED headlights work a lot better during night rides
05:15 than the stacked headlight setup
05:16 on the GSX-S1000 naked bike.
05:21 I also like this bright 6.5 inch color TFT display.
05:26 Yes, Suzuki finally stepped up to the big show
05:29 to run with the big dog
05:31 and put a 6 1/2 inch color TFT screen on it.
05:34 Looks really sharp, really clean, really easy to use.
05:37 Switch gears, very simple.
05:38 I like that it has the dark mode,
05:41 so it has the white numbers and the black background.
05:44 Suzuki also introduced its MySpin app,
05:48 which gives turn-by-turn navigation right there on display.
05:52 It's very similar to what BMW Motorrad offers
05:55 with its Ride Connected app, which is absolutely fantastic.
06:00 I also like this USB charging port that is right here,
06:03 although it looks like a 12 volt charging port.
06:06 It's actually a USB charging port, which is awesome.
06:09 A lot of motorcycles still come with 12 volt charging ports,
06:11 which is kind of cool,
06:13 but realistically we're in the USB age now,
06:15 so everything should be USB.
06:18 Handling on this motorcycle,
06:20 despite this thing weighing 40 pounds more
06:22 than the GSX-S1000 naked bike at right around 520 pounds,
06:26 this thing gets some.
06:28 This bike handles so good.
06:29 It turns left, right, right, left really well.
06:32 You would think that this motorcycle
06:34 weighed a lot less than it did,
06:35 just because it dances so well.
06:38 I like the support of the inverted fork
06:41 with the triple adjustment spring preload,
06:44 compression, and rebound damping.
06:46 The shock also feels very nice
06:48 and has a good amount of support
06:50 when you are hard on the gas.
06:53 This is a very nice motorcycle for someone
06:56 who wants to have a balance between comfort on bumpy roads
07:00 and still can get some and have some fun in the twisties.
07:03 This is an OG style sport terrain bike.
07:07 A lot of the sport terrain bikes nowadays
07:09 are becoming more upright,
07:11 almost more adventure sport touring bikes,
07:15 but Suzuki sticks to the script with its GSX-1000 GT+.
07:20 This is a tried and true sport touring rig.
07:25 Five gallon fuel tank ensures
07:27 that you have some decent range on this motorcycle.
07:30 We average right around 36, 37 miles per gallon,
07:34 but we like to give her a lot of gas.
07:36 If you're a little bit more mellow on the throttle,
07:38 you could probably get right around 40 MPGs
07:41 on this motorcycle, no problem.
07:45 Now, Suzuki motorcycles are renowned for the durability.
07:50 After your initial oil change,
07:52 this motorcycle goes 7,500 miles
07:55 between engine oil changes,
07:57 15,000 miles for engine oil filters.
08:01 The valve adjustment interval,
08:04 according to the manual, is 15,000 miles,
08:07 which is a little bit short,
08:08 especially compared to the tuning fork
08:10 brands equipment these days.
08:12 But in our experience, these motorcycles,
08:14 even when you do check the valves at 15,000 miles,
08:17 they're always spot on.
08:19 So you know you're getting a quality product
08:22 with this Suzuki GSX-1000 GT+.
08:27 Well, folks, there's a lot to like about this motorcycle.
08:33 The engine has a lot of power
08:35 to the tune of almost 137 horsepower
08:38 with 60 pound feet of torque north of 4,000 RPM.
08:42 A lot of power, good character, decent fuel mileage.
08:45 I love the bags.
08:46 They're easy to take off the motorcycle.
08:48 They swallow nearly seven gallons of cargo in each bag.
08:52 The only gripe with the bags is when you close them,
08:56 you have to have the key in, open it, close it,
08:58 pull the key out.
08:59 I wish you could have the key out
09:00 and still open and close it,
09:02 but it's almost like a safety feature
09:04 so you don't leave the bag open when you're riding.
09:08 Handling on this bike is very nice.
09:10 Yeah, it doesn't have cornering ABS,
09:12 but realistically, it doesn't really need it.
09:15 Overall, if you're looking for a very exhilarating
09:19 and fun to ride and capable OG sport touring rig,
09:24 this 2022 GSX-S1000 GT,
09:30 it really checks a lot of boxes for us.
09:33 And if my money was on the line,
09:35 I would absolutely consider this bike
09:37 versus some of its more upright
09:39 adventure sport touring competition.
09:43 All right, folks, that wraps up today's review
