00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:01 God, there are so many boring SUVs out there, but Nissan reckons it has the antidote.
00:06 This is the all-new Nissan Juke.
00:07 Now, I reckon it could be a sign of the times for Nissan.
00:10 It might be turning the corner for the brand.
00:12 It's actually not a bad-looking car.
00:14 This is the top specification Juke Ti.
00:16 It's priced from just over $36,000, and you can see the rest of the Nissan Juke price
00:20 range in the description section below.
00:23 It competes with cars like the Mazda CX-30, the Hyundai Kona, the Toyota C-HR.
00:27 They're those small SUVs built on smaller cars, in essence.
00:31 Now, if you do want to skip ahead, you can use the time codes on the screen up there,
00:35 or if you're on YouTube, just use the chapters below.
00:37 And if you haven't done so already, hit the subscribe button, and also press the bell
00:40 icon so you can find out every single time we drive something new.
00:44 Let's talk styling.
00:45 So you can get the Juke in eight different colours.
00:48 This is pretty full-on, isn't it?
00:49 If you remember the last Juke, that was a little too full-on and didn't really look
00:53 that good.
00:54 This, on the other hand, I reckon it looks cool.
00:56 Have a look at this grille.
00:57 It's a nice, big, gaping-open grille.
00:59 You have these chrome bits on the side, and it's only a small engine.
01:02 We'll go into a bit more detail with this later, but it's a three-cylinder engine, so
01:06 it does require cooling, but you can see they've blocked off some of this to not let down the
01:10 aerodynamics too much.
01:11 Then they break up the body colours with this piano black material on the front, but you
01:15 can already see that that's got scratch marks in it, which is something I always complain
01:19 about with piano black inside a car.
01:21 Now, in terms of the lighting system, you have daytime LED running lights, and then
01:25 the full LED headlights are built into this cluster here.
01:28 You can get that really cool triangular sort of, I don't know, what show is that from,
01:32 you know, when they throw the, I don't know, Ninja Turtles or something.
01:36 It looks like that.
01:37 So, it has a really cool design up the front here, and I think this is going to stand out
01:40 in traffic, and it no longer has a cheesy look.
01:43 It looks quite nice and aggressive.
01:45 By the way, LED fog lights as well.
01:47 And then, around the side here, the top-spec TI gets 19-inch alloy wheels, 225mm wide rubber
01:52 on 45 profile, so they're a pretty big wheel.
01:55 I suspect it's going to ruin the ride, but we will see soon whether that's the case.
01:59 Then around the wheel arches here, you have this plastic cladding.
02:02 Again, this is a front-wheel drive car.
02:03 You're not going to be doing any off-roading in it, but it kind of gives you the impression
02:06 that it can go somewhere if it needs to.
02:08 I like the wheel design too, with this reflective section offset against the black.
02:13 Kind of looks like they've just cut straight through a black wheel.
02:16 That reveals this, which is great.
02:17 Sorry about the noise here, by the way.
02:18 We're literally underneath a freeway.
02:20 Let me show you the rest of the car.
02:22 So you get these black mirrors on the entire range, shark-fin antenna for the top-spec
02:26 plus the privacy glass.
02:28 And have a look at this, the door handle is built into that section just up the top there.
02:33 So it kind of makes it look like a coupe, because you don't have a traditional door
02:36 handle in here.
02:37 But there is something strange here.
02:39 Have a look at the fit on this.
02:41 It kind of sticks out.
02:42 I don't think it's meant to be like that, but pretty disappointing for a brand new car.
02:46 Come around to the back here, you've got this in-built spoiler along the back, and then
02:50 LED taillights across the back of the car.
02:53 It really is quite smart-looking.
02:54 They haven't just designed the front end.
02:56 Everything about the car looks nice and muscular and bold.
02:59 Now, what about the dimensions compared to the previous generation?
03:02 It's 30mm taller, 75mm longer, 35mm wider, and sits on a wheelbase that's 106mm longer.
03:10 And it has an overall weight of just 1250kg, so it is a seriously light car.
03:15 So in continuing with the theme of the outside of the Juke, the inside is very different
03:19 to the last one, but in a good way.
03:21 Have a look at all this Alcantara on this top-spec model.
03:24 It's on the dashboard there, it's sitting here inside the doors, on the armrest, and
03:27 it's built into the seats, and the seats look pretty cool as well.
03:30 Have a look at this as well.
03:31 I'm going to run you through that shortly.
03:33 Speakers built into the headrests.
03:35 Some interesting technology there, but for the main part, it looks really cool.
03:38 Then they've gone to a bit of effort here with the air vents.
03:40 So they move around in their slot there, but you can turn them to open and close them.
03:44 Hear how they click as you turn?
03:46 So yeah, it really does feel quite premium in here, and it certainly feels a big step
03:51 up from something like a CX-3 or a Hyundai Kona.
03:55 But how quality is it?
03:57 So we've got our hardness tester here, it measures from 0 to 100.
03:59 This is a bit of a joke tool, but a lot of motoring journalists go on about how hard
04:04 soft-touch surfaces are, so let's give it a test on the dashboard there.
04:08 0 soft, 100 is hard.
04:09 Do it on the Alcantara.
04:11 Wow, that's nice and plush.
04:13 It's reading under 50.
04:15 And try it on this surface as well.
04:18 Same story, pretty impressive result there.
04:20 So yes, the Alcantara is soft for our soft-touch material test.
04:24 And build quality?
04:25 Yeah, it feels really good.
04:27 Nothing's out of place here.
04:28 This car's built in the UK, but it all feels nice and solid.
04:31 Let's talk infotainment.
04:32 If you've seen some of our other Nissan reviews, you'll know that infotainment systems aren't
04:36 really Nissan's strong suit, but that has all changed.
04:39 Nissan has just rolled out a brand new infotainment system.
04:41 This here is an 8-inch infotainment system, and today I'm going to take you through a
04:45 detailed review of it, plus all the features that it comes with.
04:47 So let's get stuck into it.
04:48 This is what the home screen looks like, and you can see that you have customisable menus.
04:52 You can change what appears in each menu, and then they slide across, with this being
04:56 your default home screen, with shortcuts for entry for navigation, radio, and then call
05:01 history as well.
05:02 Let's dive through each menu.
05:03 We'll start off here with the phone.
05:05 You can quick dial with favourites, run through a phone book, go through the call history,
05:09 so recently dialled numbers, dial a number yourself, check text messages, adjust Bluetooth
05:14 connections and then also do volume controls.
05:17 The entire system can be controlled using voice recognition.
05:20 One push of this button allows you to enter navigation addresses and also make phone calls
05:24 as well.
05:25 Over in the info menu, there's some extra details there for the navigation system.
05:28 So for example, traffic information.
05:30 This is built into the inbuilt TomTom navigation that I'll show you in a second, but this is
05:34 able to show you nearby traffic information and details.
05:37 So here you can see all the traffic problems around us, and there's quite a few.
05:41 And then the other great feature here is where am I.
05:43 If you're ever involved in a car accident or the first at the scene of a car accident,
05:47 you need to tell people where you are.
05:48 You can see exact GPS coordinates down the bottom and then your nearest cross streets
05:53 as well.
05:54 Very useful feature and hopefully you never have to use it, but it is there in case you
05:57 ever do.
05:58 Over on the audio menu, you'll find FM, AM, DAB plus digital radio plus Bluetooth streaming
06:03 as well, and also the ability to connect with the traditional auxiliary port or via USB.
06:08 If you click on the map menu, that takes you to the inbuilt satellite navigation.
06:12 This uses a TomTom system that's built into the car.
06:15 Works pretty well, it can be a little bit laggy at times as you zoom in and out, but
06:19 for the most part it's a really quick system and far better than the old navigation system
06:23 that used to be integrated here in Nissans.
06:25 Let's try putting a destination, we'll see how quick it is.
06:28 Melbourne Airport is my go-to.
06:30 Let's type that in.
06:32 You can already see the results starting to appear down the bottom there.
06:37 Melbourne Airport.
06:41 I'm having to type the whole thing out, do a list.
06:45 There we go, Melbourne Airport.
06:46 So pretty straightforward, it works really well.
06:49 In terms of smartphone connectivity, you have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto built into
06:53 the screen.
06:54 Both of those are via a cable, so not a wireless system, you have to plug in manually to do
06:59 that.
07:00 It uses up the entire screen as well, so it's a good use of that screen real estate.
07:04 Then the final one is the settings menu.
07:05 So you can see here Bluetooth settings, phone settings, settings for customising the audio
07:10 menu, the home screen.
07:11 This is all sort of where it's located.
07:13 Down the bottom you have some features for a day/night switch, so if that's ever too
07:17 bright you hit that button, it'll dim it.
07:19 Also a shortcut button for the camera, so that brings up that 360 degree camera and
07:23 then shows you the area around the car.
07:25 And then shortcut menus for the map, the menu and audio as well.
07:29 Okay, let's talk about the rest of the features that come standard in the Juke in this top
07:32 spec model.
07:33 So you have automatic climate control down the bottom here, but it's only single zone,
07:37 which is a little bit disappointing.
07:38 It would have been nice to see dual zone.
07:40 Heated seats.
07:41 Ahead of the driver is a 7-inch TFT display, it shows you information like your trip computer,
07:46 which doors are open and then all the safety systems as well.
07:48 Talking about safety systems, autonomous emergency braking comes with pedestrian and cyclist
07:53 detection.
07:54 You have radar cruise control, lane departure assistant, blind spot monitoring, you have
07:58 a 360 degree camera, but it's not a very good camera.
08:01 I just don't get why they don't have higher quality cameras in here.
08:05 It's just really hard to make things out here.
08:06 And then in the past with Nissan cars at night time, these have been virtually redundant
08:10 because you can't see anything.
08:11 But a second push of the camera brings up a door camera that helps you see cyclists
08:16 and making sure you don't scratch those wheels against the kerb.
08:19 They come with front and rear parking sensors as well to make parking this little car much
08:24 easier.
08:25 Let's have a look at the keys, this is what it looks like.
08:27 Lock, unlock and then a redundant button that does nothing.
08:30 Nissan logo on top.
08:32 Nice little compact key as well with nothing on the back there.
08:34 And it's a proximity sensing key too, so you just leave that in your pocket, approach the
08:38 door, grab the door handle, push the button and it's also a push button start, so you
08:41 don't need to take that out of your pocket.
08:42 There is one more feature I want to show you before we wrap up this section and it's this.
08:46 It may look like a bit of a gimmick having a speaker built into the headrest, but there
08:50 is logic to it.
08:52 So this is called Bose Personal Plus.
08:54 Now we have a full review of this technology on our website.
08:57 You can click up here to read that.
08:58 Where Bose is going with it in the future, they want you to be able to listen to a phone
09:02 call for example while you're a driver and then for your passengers to not hear it.
09:06 So that's where the technology is going, but this is the start of it and it's designed
09:09 to increase the sound space or narrow it down for the driver and the front passenger.
09:13 So if I pop some music on, I can hear the music as it is now, but if I go into the sound
09:19 menu, I can enable this and then change whether it's a wide or narrow field.
09:24 So right now it's wide and it feels like there's noise coming from all around the cabin.
09:28 If I narrow it down to its most narrow setting, it sounds like it's coming directly into my
09:33 ears.
09:34 It's quite a weird phenomenon and it's hard to explain without actually experiencing it
09:37 yourself.
09:38 So there's eight speakers and the whole idea behind this is you don't then need an additional
09:41 subwoofer because you're getting all that noise pumped right into your ears.
09:44 Okay, what about practicality and comfort?
09:46 We'll start off with storage.
09:47 Phone, where is it going to live?
09:49 Well it fits perfectly there.
09:52 Kind of fits at a squeeze down the front.
09:54 No wireless phone charging unfortunately.
09:57 What about storage for drink bottles?
09:59 Perfect fit, perfect fit and then in the doors you have room for a full bottle plus odds
10:04 and ends and then storage down here.
10:07 It's okay.
10:08 It's not the world's biggest centre console.
10:10 What about the glove box?
10:11 The glove box is pretty generous, so plenty of room there even when you have the manual
10:14 inside as well.
10:15 And then comfort.
10:16 Yeah, love these seats.
10:18 They look seriously cool and they are properly comfortable.
10:21 So they're nice and huggy.
10:23 Huggy.
10:24 Let me just hug around you.
10:26 Steering wheel sits nicely in the hand too with a flat bottom on it and then paddle shifters
10:31 behind it.
10:32 Let's talk back seat.
10:33 So extra wheelbase in this generation of Juke means you're afforded a little bit more room
10:37 back here.
10:38 Yes, it is good on paper but if you do have your seat in a regular driving position a
10:43 bit like me, I do have it quite far back so some people may have it a little further forward
10:47 but you'll see here that I don't have a great deal of knee room but I do have sufficient
10:51 toe room and headroom is pretty reasonable.
10:54 So you're going to be able to fit an adult here for maybe a shorter journey, even a longer
10:58 one if you want because you can spread out a little bit but it is still a little bit
11:01 cramped.
11:02 So, map pockets in the back of the seats.
11:04 You have a USB port here for charging devices plus a little phone tray down there while
11:08 your device is charging.
11:10 No center armrest but you do get ISOFIX points.
11:12 And then have a look at these seats.
11:13 They look really sweet.
11:14 That sort of ribbed effect on the front seat is translated back here with the Alcantara
11:20 bits built in.
11:21 And then these seats have top tether points on each of the seats and grab handles as well.
11:26 And where are you going to put your bottle while you're drinking if there's no center
11:28 armrest?
11:29 Well, there is a slot in the door there plus room on the other side as well to put other
11:33 bits and pieces.
11:34 One of the big advantages of a bigger Juke is more cargo space.
11:37 So there's 422 litres of cargo space available here and on top of that, under the cargo floor
11:43 you have a SpaceSaver spare tyre.
11:45 It's really good space because it's nice and deep so when you put things in, they're not
11:50 going to move around too much and it just feels a little more spacious than a Kona or
11:53 a CX-3.
11:54 So they've really gone to a lot of effort here to make this functional.
11:58 So let's get rid of this.
11:59 I'll show you how this works.
12:00 So undo these little clip things up the top.
12:03 That then slides out.
12:04 There's no way to put this so that's just going to have to sit at home or just there
12:07 on the floor.
12:08 Then the space expands to a little over 1300 litres when you drop the second row.
12:14 That sort of expands it nicely.
12:15 There I'll show you how it goes with our bags.
12:18 They fit in nicely there and then off to the side you have a little light and then hooks
12:21 as well.
12:22 So we've hit the road in the Juke and we're doing this test a little differently.
12:26 We're in and around the city so we want to see what this car is going to be like where
12:29 people are buying it.
12:30 Under the bonnet is a 1.0-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder petrol engine.
12:35 Now that may sound familiar.
12:37 It's a similar engine size and configuration to the Ford Fiesta ST.
12:42 You can see our review of that by clicking up there.
12:44 That means it's got a raspy note to it and it has a little gruff idle as well because
12:48 inherently 3-cylinder engines are just a little off balance.
12:51 So that means when you do get stuck into it, you can hear it start making a really cool
12:58 noise.
12:59 It produces 84 kilowatts of power and 180 newton metres of torque.
13:03 Now if you remember back to when I said the weight, the weight is only 1250 kilos and
13:08 that means that 84 kilowatts is a fair bit of power for a car that weighs barely anything.
13:12 Here's another fun fact for you as well.
13:14 This engine is part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance and it's in the same family as the
13:20 1.3-litre engine.
13:22 So they share a lot of similarities.
13:23 Now the curious thing is that that 1.3-litre engine is used in a bunch of Renault products
13:27 but also in the Mercedes-Benz A-Class.
13:30 So you technically kind of have a Mercedes-Benz-esque engine under the bonnet here.
13:35 Connecting the drivetrain to the wheels is a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
13:41 I don't know how many times I need to go over this but a dual-clutch transmission in
13:44 a sports car makes perfect sense because you're trying to extract as much as you can out of
13:48 it.
13:49 Here though, they've put it in for fuel efficiency.
13:51 So the combined fuel economy is 5.8 litres per 100 kilometres but the problem is that
13:56 it's not really a refined gearbox.
13:59 So at low speeds it tends to shunt you around a little bit.
14:02 It's not overly quick so we're travelling along here, I'll punch it.
14:05 You kind of have to wait for it to kick down so you're not really getting any of the benefits
14:10 of a dual-clutch transmission but you are getting that weird, unsure feeling at low
14:14 speeds and it's really quite off-putting.
14:15 Okay, so this is what I mean about the gearbox.
14:17 We're cruising along slowly here.
14:19 If I lean on the throttle it kind of jerks you forward.
14:24 It's a little inconsistent going from forward into reverse.
14:29 I'll pop this into reverse.
14:33 It's sort of laggy and it waits to do things.
14:36 Yeah, not really a huge fan of it.
14:38 Unlike a lot of other SUVs or mini-SUVs in this segment, the Juke actually has a pretty
14:43 commendable 172mm ground clearance.
14:46 So you're not going to be doing any rock hopping or off-roading because it is only front-wheel
14:50 drive but 172mm means you can probably do a bit of light off-roading to a campsite somewhere.
14:56 Keep in mind as well that this platform is capable of all-wheel drive so in the future
15:00 we may see an all-wheel drive version of the Juke.
15:03 Let's talk drive modes.
15:04 So you have three to choose from.
15:05 You have Eco, Normal and Sport.
15:07 Eco just dulls everything down.
15:09 Normal is for regular driving but Sport is what I'm interested in.
15:13 When you press the throttle, it just sharpens everything up.
15:18 So you're getting a whole lot more noise, the throttle responds much quicker and the
15:22 steering feels like you're actually doing something which is pretty cool and I think
15:25 the Sport mode is the best character for this engine.
15:29 It really just makes it feel vibrant and alive.
15:31 Okay, so we're now getting into the depths of the city here.
15:34 What is the ride like?
15:35 We're on 19-inch alloy wheels and it is surprisingly good.
15:39 We often complain with cars like the X-Trail about it being too firm, same with the Qashqai.
15:42 Here though, it feels really nice.
15:45 So the 19-inch wheels aren't crashing, we're going over tram tracks and bumps, speed humps
15:49 and it's really just soaking it up nicely.
15:51 So well done Nissan, you've actually created a nice riding SUV.
15:55 Let's talk visibility.
15:56 So at the front, it's really good.
15:58 At the back, it's quite a narrow window so you're not really seeing a great deal and
16:01 if you've got anyone in that middle seat, you'll have no visibility at all.
16:05 But at the sides, it's pretty reasonable with decent-sized wing mirrors.
16:08 And that carries over to parking.
16:09 It means that with the 360 camera, while it isn't the best quality in the world, it's
16:13 going to make parking a little easier.
16:14 The steering's nice and light too, so you don't really feel like you're driving a sporty
16:19 car or a super comfortable car.
16:21 It sits right in the middle there, so you're getting enough feedback but it isn't too heavy
16:24 or too light.
16:25 So Nissan Juke, I reckon they have absolutely nailed the styling.
16:29 It looks really smart but aggressive at the same time and it looks completely different
16:32 to anything else in this segment, which I think is going to lead a lot of people into
16:36 buying this car.
16:37 It's reasonably priced, it's loaded with features and in this top-spec model, it just
16:41 comes with everything.
16:42 And I love all the Alcantara bits, the Bose headphones, but it is let down by that gearbox.
16:46 I don't know, I'm just really not a fan of it.
16:48 So make sure you have a drive of it first.
