00:00 G'day, I'm Paul. What a bizarre world that we live in.
00:03 You are waiting up to like, or even more than 12 months for some cars, including this, the Kia Sorento.
00:08 And I guess our pick of the range is the GT line, but if you don't want to wait for that,
00:14 a lot of people are compromising on specification and even colours to get the car sooner.
00:18 So I thought we'd revisit the Sorento in this trim, which is Sport Plus.
00:22 It's one down from the top specification.
00:24 This is priced at a little under $55,000,
00:27 so it's pretty good value for money when you consider the features that you're getting.
00:30 But if that is too expensive, the entire Sorento range kicks off at around that $45,000 mark.
00:36 Now, today we're going to do a detailed review of this car.
00:38 So if you do want to skip ahead to other parts of the review,
00:40 you can use the time codes on the screen there, or if you're on YouTube,
00:43 scroll down and use the chapters below.
00:44 And if you haven't done so already, subscribe to our channel and press the bell icon.
00:49 That way you'll find out every single time we drive a car that is in hot demand.
00:55 Let's talk exterior.
00:56 So you've got seven external colours to pick from.
00:58 All that white is going to cost you an additional $695.
01:01 Now, in terms of the design, so yes, this isn't the top specification model,
01:06 but I still reckon it kind of looks like the top specification model.
01:09 You can't really tell too much of a difference.
01:11 And the difference between the Sorento and the Santa Fe,
01:15 I think that the Sorento just looks, I don't know, so much classier.
01:19 It really is quite a sophisticated design,
01:21 and they've kind of just given it a uniform European look as opposed to Santa Fe,
01:26 which is kind of a bit out there with all the
01:28 headlights in different places and that kind of thing.
01:30 And it's all lit up the front here by the new Kia logo.
01:32 I know this has been on a few cars that we've tested before already,
01:35 but I think this really kind of gives this car that stylish, youthful appearance.
01:40 You've got piano black here in a 3D texture,
01:43 and that gives you access to some cooling for the car.
01:46 You've got a radar sensor down the bottom here.
01:48 And I think this colour works well with that piano black finish too.
01:51 It really kind of gives it just that little bit of presence out on the road.
01:54 Over here, you've got a set of LED daytime running lights,
01:57 full set of LED headlights as well,
02:00 so you get excellent vision if you're driving out in the country.
02:04 Round the side here, you've got a set of 19-inch alloy wheels with 55 profile tyre.
02:10 Now, what does profile mean on a tyre?
02:13 I think we should actually do like a segment on tyres, like a tyres explain.
02:16 If you do want to see that, let me know in the comments section below.
02:19 But the higher this number is, the more rubber you have on the sidewall,
02:22 and in theory, the better the ride is going to be,
02:24 because you have more room there for that spring action.
02:27 So in engineering, you'll know that the more distance you have, the softer it is.
02:32 So yeah, fun fact.
02:34 Over on the side here, you've got some wheel arch protectors.
02:37 So this signifies that you're driving an SUV.
02:39 This is the V6 version, which means it is front-wheel drive only.
02:43 You won't be doing any off-roading in this,
02:44 but one other thing I'll point out as well is the wheel design.
02:46 I quite like this finish.
02:47 You've got that machined finish on the outside,
02:49 and then you have this sort of glossier finish on the inside.
02:52 Quite a nice looking wheel, and like I said,
02:54 you really can't tell that this isn't the top specification model.
02:57 They don't go to town with badges and all that sort of stuff,
02:59 so people don't know exactly how much you've spent.
03:01 It just looks nice and classy on the outside.
03:03 Up the top here, you've got an LED indicator built into that wing mirror
03:07 with a piano black section at the bottom.
03:08 I like this strip here.
03:09 We first saw this on Carnival along the back section,
03:13 and I think this really works well, that brushed aluminium look.
03:16 It's just a whole lot classier than chrome,
03:18 and I think it really gives this car that premium feel.
03:21 That continues down the bottom there as well,
03:23 all the way down the side of the car,
03:24 and they've also got it here on top of the door handles as well.
03:27 You have roof rails, privacy glass, and then come around to the back,
03:31 you have a shark fin aerial brake light built into here,
03:34 and that's where they tuck that wiper in as well,
03:37 so you won't be able to see that.
03:38 New Kia logo just there, and then Sorento along the bottom.
03:41 Now, take note here, you'll see there are no model designations here,
03:45 so like I said before, it kind of just means that, you know,
03:48 people don't know that you've gone for something that isn't the top spec model,
03:51 and I guess it makes you feel better about how much you've spent.
03:53 And finally, down here, you've got LED taillights.
03:57 So let me know what you reckon about the design.
03:58 Do you agree with me that this looks better than the Santa Fe
04:01 in terms of it being a little less complex,
04:03 or do you think the Santa Fe looks better?
04:05 Let me know down there.
04:06 Okay, so we are inside the Sorento.
04:08 Let's start off with the keys.
04:09 So you've got "Key" down the bottom there.
04:12 On the edge, you have "Lock", "Unlock", "Remote Start".
04:16 You have a push and hold for the boot,
04:19 and then on the back, it is just blank.
04:21 This is a proximity sensing key, so you leave that in your pocket.
04:24 Then once you're inside, you have a push button start over here.
04:27 So in terms of the design, I quite like this.
04:30 So there is a lot of piano black around here,
04:33 and then the edges of that screen.
04:34 But in terms of the presentation,
04:36 they've done a really good job here of making it look and feel premium.
04:39 So I mean, stuff like this soft touch dashboard finish
04:42 with the faux stitched sort of leather segments up the top there.
04:47 And then as you gradually get lower, that all still stays nice and soft.
04:50 You've got this sort of textured,
04:52 sort of brushed aluminium style stuff over here as well.
04:55 And then a big infotainment screen sitting there proudly.
04:58 So really good setup.
04:59 And then as we'll talk about later on,
05:01 you've got stacks of storage there as well.
05:04 What are the touch points like?
05:05 Well, this stuff here, really nice and soft,
05:08 soft on the door there as well.
05:09 How soft is it?
05:10 Well, we've got our durometer.
05:12 We've tested the main surfaces in this cabin.
05:14 If you want to see how this car compares to others that we've tested before,
05:17 have a look at the link in the description.
05:19 Build quality, what's it like?
05:21 That feels really nice and solid.
05:25 So very impressed with that.
05:26 And then our door slam.
05:27 Yeah, that sounds very nice and confident.
05:34 Now, moving on to infotainment.
05:37 So instead of the GT line, which has an infotainment screen,
05:41 plus a full LCD display ahead of the driver,
05:43 the Sport Plus only comes with a 10.25-inch infotainment display and then analogue gauges.
05:49 So I'll run you through the infotainment system first,
05:52 plus the small screen ahead of the driver between those analogue gauges as well.
05:56 So this is your home screen.
05:57 It'll look familiar to you if you've seen other Kia and Hyundai products,
06:00 because it is the same infotainment system.
06:02 Up the top there, you've got selections for profiles,
06:05 and as you swipe to the right, you have access to all of these menus.
06:08 I thought it's worth calling out some of the cool features that you get in Sorento.
06:12 So voice memo means you can record messages while you're out on the move.
06:16 Quiet mode, which only plays audio on the front of the car,
06:20 which means if you do have kids or stuff asleep in the second or third rows,
06:23 they won't be disturbed by your terrible, probably terrible music selections.
06:28 Then in addition to that, on this screen, you have the manual built into the car.
06:32 Then you have satellite navigation built in as well,
06:35 but if you do want to pair your phone, it comes with smartphone mirroring in the form of
06:39 Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
06:41 Both of those systems are wired.
06:43 I'll show you Android Auto first.
06:44 So technically a full screen integration, but you can see on the right there,
06:48 it just says Android Auto, even though we know that it's Android Auto.
06:52 I think someone mentioned once that you can actually configure it to be full screen,
06:56 but I'll be keen for your feedback on how to do that so we can set that up in our future videos.
07:01 But outside of that, it's a pretty quick integration.
07:03 It moves nice and fast and no dramas there at all.
07:06 I'll show you what it looks like with Apple CarPlay.
07:08 So full screen integration here, unlike that sort of cutoff system with Android Auto,
07:14 and that's nice and quick as well.
07:15 I love that resolution.
07:17 It is really, really high resolution, so very impressed with that.
07:21 In terms of radio, you have AM, FM, DAB plus digital radio,
07:25 and that's all plumbed through a six speaker sound system.
07:28 Look, the sound system isn't amazing.
07:30 It's not like the Bose branded sound system you get in the top spec, so
07:34 it is okay, but not quite as good as the top specification.
07:37 Now I mentioned earlier, you do have a screen ahead of the driver,
07:40 so you have the analog gauges on either side.
07:42 The screen in the center displays your trip computer plus critical car information,
07:46 and you've got a whole bunch of different menus you can flick through there as well
07:50 while you're on the move.
07:51 So not quite as impressive as the big LCD display, but I think this is a good alternative.
07:56 Now, what about your safety?
07:57 So in terms of safety, you have autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and
08:01 cyclist detection.
08:02 You have front and rear AEB.
08:05 You've got blind spot monitoring built into the wing mirror,
08:07 lane departure warning, and a lane keeping assistant.
08:10 It has a self-steering system, but it doesn't really work that well,
08:13 so I just switched that stuff off because it just tugs at the wheel randomly,
08:16 and there's like endless roadworks at the moment,
08:18 and it just keeps sending you off into random directions when you don't want it to.
08:22 You've got radar cruise control, and then in terms of parking,
08:24 you have both front and rear parking sensors and a reverse view camera.
08:28 I'll show you what that looks like.
08:28 There it is there.
08:30 So you can see the sonar front and rear, and then the reverse view camera with
08:34 the guidelines that move with the steering wheel.
08:36 Camera quality isn't amazing.
08:38 It's sort of quite, yeah, low resolution.
08:41 I know in the GT line, the camera quality was fantastic,
08:43 so yeah, I reckon that could be a little bit better.
08:46 And hey, it's worth calling out a video that we shot a little while back
08:49 explaining how parking technology, including reverse AEB, works.
08:53 So click up here to watch that.
08:54 Oh, by the way, I forgot to mention on the door,
08:57 you actually have like this reflective panel as well.
09:00 So if you do open the door and there's like a cyclist or a car or something coming,
09:05 they're going to see that little reflective panel and hopefully not run into it.
09:09 Let's talk about practicality, and we'll start off with your connectivity options.
09:12 So down here, you've got three USB ports.
09:15 Two are for faster charging, and one is for charging,
09:18 and also USB connectivity for your smartphone mirroring.
09:21 Get rid of that for a second.
09:23 Now, this spec doesn't come with wireless phone charging,
09:26 but the top spec does, and that's where your charging pad is.
09:29 So when it does come to storing your devices,
09:31 you can still use that as just a standard sort of pad to hold your phone,
09:35 or you can pop your phone literally in any of these other slots.
09:38 There are plenty of spaces there.
09:40 And what if you love your coffee like I do?
09:42 So this thing can fit anywhere you want.
09:45 The only problem is that this back slot is a little too deep,
09:48 so it's a bit hard to grab the lid.
09:49 But down the front there, it sits a little bit higher,
09:52 so it is easy to retrieve your coffee without deleting it and spilling it everywhere.
09:57 In addition to that, you have teeth built into these little sockets here,
10:02 so when you do put your bottle in, it's not going to roll around too much.
10:06 It will be held into position nicely.
10:08 Bottle can then also go inside the door with ease.
10:11 What about our big bottle?
10:12 We'll give that a shot.
10:13 Okay, so it doesn't fit into there.
10:17 Does it fit into the door?
10:18 No, it doesn't fit into the door either.
10:21 It's a bit disappointing.
10:22 I would have hoped that, you know, you could fit a big bottle in here,
10:25 given it is a family car.
10:26 Now, what about the rest of your storage?
10:28 So you have stacks of it.
10:29 This is closeable, so you can hide little odds and ends in there,
10:33 and you can also pop your phone down there, like I mentioned earlier.
10:35 You've got your cup holders.
10:36 This storage slot here, one here ahead of that centre console.
10:40 Then inside the centre console, you have a coin tray,
10:43 and then quite a deep storage area for little bits and pieces.
10:47 And finally, you have a glove box over here with pretty generous storage,
10:52 even with the manual in there.
10:54 Finally, comfort.
10:55 You have dual zone automatic climate control up the front here.
10:58 You've got heated seats for the front row, heated steering wheel.
11:01 In terms of the seats, quite like the design.
11:03 So it's perforated, even though this doesn't have ventilated seats.
11:06 That perforation gives you a little bit of a cooler atmosphere on hot days.
11:11 Seats are pretty comfy as well.
11:12 They hug you in nicely.
11:13 Then in terms of the seat adjustment,
11:15 the driver's seat is electrically adjustable,
11:17 while the passenger seat is manually adjustable.
11:20 With the driver's seat, you can go forwards, backwards.
11:22 Backrest goes forwards, backwards.
11:23 You can lift the base of the seat.
11:25 You can also adjust your bolster too.
11:28 Steering wheel, it has both tilt and reach adjustment.
11:32 And then on our reach test, all of this stuff is easy to reach.
11:36 Tiny little stretch to get to those outer buttons while you're on the move.
11:39 OK, second row.
11:40 Look, first impression, I have a stack of room here.
11:43 So my driver's seat's pretty far back, but I have loads of knee room,
11:47 heaps of toe room, and headroom is excellent as well.
11:51 So as a family car, it meets that brief.
11:54 It is worth pointing out as well that the seats move forwards and backwards.
11:57 So you can actually give yourself more room in the third row
12:00 if you have taller people in there, which we'll test in just a second.
12:03 Down here, you've got a set of air vents.
12:06 Beneath that, a 12-volt outlet and a USB point,
12:09 plus an additional two USB ports on the edge of the seat there.
12:13 Dual-tiered matte pockets behind the driver and front passenger.
12:17 You have a center armrest here with two cup holders and protection.
12:23 We'll get rid of that because I want to put the bottle in.
12:26 So bottle fits in there.
12:29 It's kind of satisfying knowing that I'm the first person to have ever used
12:33 the bottle holder in this car since it left the factory.
12:36 So weird fun fact.
12:38 But your bottle fits inside the door as well down the bottom there,
12:42 plus you have a tier of storage at the top,
12:45 although you can see that bottle moves around a fair bit inside there.
12:49 And question, does our window open all the way?
12:53 It is auto down and auto up.
12:55 Look at that, fully opening window, which is good news.
12:58 And finally, you have ISOFIX points on these two outboard seats,
13:02 but it is worth pointing out that you have three top tether points in the second row
13:05 and also two top tether points in the third row.
13:08 So you have plenty of storage here if you are pumping kids out.
13:12 Now let's talk third row for Sorento.
13:15 Getting into the third row is pretty straightforward.
13:17 You've got a button down here or a button at the top of the seat.
13:20 When you do push that, the seat slides forward and gives you a little access path.
13:24 There's also a little handle here as well if you've got little kids that need to climb in.
13:27 Now this is kind of designed just for kids,
13:30 but I'm going to get in there just to show you exactly how much room you have.
13:33 So pardon my bum.
13:34 All right, so I've navigated my way inside.
13:39 What I'm going to do now is put this all the way back so you can see how much knee room I have.
13:43 So not a great deal of knee room, toe room isn't good either.
13:47 But Sean, can I get you to slide that seat forward a little bit?
13:50 Okay, so when it's slid forward a little bit, you actually get more knee room.
13:55 The passenger there still has adequate amount of knee room as well.
14:00 In terms of my space though, so my head is up against the roof there.
14:04 I do have sort of enough width here if there was someone next to me.
14:07 So while this isn't a space designed specifically for adults,
14:10 you can fit adults here if you need to.
14:13 Then you've got cup holders on the side, a little storage bin,
14:16 USB ports plus air vent as well on both sides and your own blower controls here.
14:21 It is worth keeping in mind that the airbag doesn't cover the entire third row.
14:25 So if you have kids back here, it won't have full airbag coverage.
14:28 Now let's have a look at the boot.
14:29 I'm curious to see how much room there actually is behind this third row.
14:33 Okay, cargo space.
14:35 Now one of the kind of caveats of these three-row SUVs is you don't really get a great deal of cargo
14:41 space behind the third row.
14:42 So power tailgate.
14:43 Here you've got a little under 200 litres of cargo space.
14:47 That's not a huge amount of room, but you do get storage beneath the cargo floor.
14:50 That's where you'll find your jack plus a little bit of storage that you won't be able to see from
14:54 outside the car, which is better news than having people prying inside.
14:58 You've got a spare tyre just under the car there as well, and it's a full-size spare.
15:02 Now when you do drop your third row, you can use these controls here.
15:06 So you just go bang, bang, they fold out of the way.
15:11 That gives you access to a little over 600 litres of cargo space.
15:14 And I'll show you how much room that is with our stuff inside.
15:17 Now our suitcase.
15:19 Let's have a chat about that.
15:20 I don't know where it is.
15:21 We've lost it for the moment.
15:22 So at the moment, we've got one of these Pelican cases.
15:25 This is kind of in between a carry-on suitcase that you take on a plane and a mid-size suitcase
15:31 to give you an idea of how much room you have there.
15:33 Get that out of the way.
15:35 Over to the side, you have a 12-volt outlet plus the ability to get rid of your second row
15:40 with push of a button.
15:41 So bang, that goes down, that goes down, and that gives you access to a little over 2000 litres of
15:47 cargo space.
15:47 So we've just hit the road in the Sorento.
15:52 Now, powering this is a naturally aspirated V6.
15:55 It's a 3.5-litre.
15:57 It produces 200 kilowatts of power and 332 newton metres of torque, and it's all mated
16:03 to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
16:05 And it's just a standard torque converter transmission, so you don't have a dual-clutch
16:09 setup here, which I think is good news.
16:10 This is front-wheel drive only with the V6.
16:13 So unlike the diesel, which is available only in all-wheel drive, this is front-wheel drive.
16:18 I think it's a little bit disappointing because I'd love to have the option of a petrol V6
16:21 in all-wheel drive trim.
16:22 It kind of then just covers all bases.
16:24 Now, how does all that feel behind the wheel?
16:29 Let's give this a little punch here.
16:31 Look, I think the easiest way to describe this, it's so, I don't know, it's like so smooth
16:41 and gentle and relaxing.
16:43 So even when you put the foot down, it takes a little bit of time to grab the gear, but
16:47 then when it does, it just really just wafts along and starts increasing pace.
16:51 It's not like a turbocharged setup where it gives you that punch in the back, it just
16:55 really just gets its thinking and then it starts moving along nicely.
17:00 It actually sounds pretty cool as well.
17:01 Being a naturally aspirated petrol engine, you get that sort of sonorous note to itself.
17:06 Now, let's talk fuel economy.
17:09 So Kia claims 9.7 litres per 100 km on the combined cycle.
17:14 These tend to be pretty thirsty because they are quite heavy and naturally aspirated petrol
17:18 V6, but let's have a look at what we're currently sitting on.
17:21 11.
17:22 So look, it's not actually too far off, it's about 10% off that official claim.
17:26 So I'd be pretty happy with that given this is, you know, petrol V6, I think that is about
17:30 where it should be there in terms of fuel use.
17:32 Now, let's dial up the speed a little bit.
17:34 We're on our country road here, we'll get up to country road speeds and we'll just go
17:39 up to the maximum speed limit here in Australia to our sine waves, which is the undulations
17:44 that will give us an idea of how the suspension feels.
17:47 So here they come here as we hit them.
17:50 It is so soft.
17:53 The ride is so nice and cushy and the road noise is actually pretty good.
17:59 So this is quite a course chip road here and we're not getting a huge amount of tyre noise
18:03 into the cabin.
18:04 Even as speed pick up, there really isn't much wind noise coming into the cabin either.
18:07 So it is a nicely insulated cabin.
18:10 That means that if you are doing country miles, it's not going to be droney or affect your
18:14 ability to just relax inside the car.
18:16 And that applies to the ride in and around the city, especially with those bigger sidewall
18:21 tyres that I mentioned earlier.
18:22 That's giving you just that little bit of extra padding so that when you do hit bumps,
18:25 it all gets absorbed nicely.
18:27 This car, of course, had Australian right and handling tuning, which is why it feels
18:30 so confident on Australian roads.
18:32 Now let's pop this into sport mode, see what it's like through our corners here.
18:36 I'm not expecting it to be amazing, but we'll see what it's like anyway.
18:40 Pile it through here.
18:42 Look, it has got a fair degree of body roll and that's kind of what I was expecting anyway.
18:49 It is a big family four wheel drive.
18:51 But look, as you sort of pile the power on, it actually feels pretty fun behind the wheel.
18:58 The steering wheel gets a little bit heavier when it is in the sport mode.
19:01 That means you're getting a little bit more feedback through the wheel there.
19:04 Look, it is good.
19:06 I obviously wouldn't be going up a mountain pass in this and hoping to overtake sports
19:10 cars, but it does its job nicely.
19:12 You will obviously run into traction limits with this being a front wheel drive, but if
19:16 you drive sensibly, it can be pretty fun behind the wheel.
19:19 Now let's talk about drive mode.
19:20 So using the drive mode selector here, you can turn this dial and it will give you all
19:24 of your drive modes.
19:25 We have smart, sport, eco and comfort.
19:28 This just uses a standard suspension setup, so there's no adaptive damping here, which
19:32 means you don't really notice any difference behind the wheel.
19:34 When you do flick it through those modes though, you will notice a difference in steering
19:38 wheel weight.
19:38 So at lower speeds, it is quite light and easy to park, but then as speeds pick up or
19:44 you go into your sport mode, the steering does get a little bit heavier to give you
19:47 that extra bit of communication behind the wheel.
19:49 Now what about your visibility?
19:52 So big wing mirrors, I can clearly see down the side of the car there.
19:55 Got a blind spot monitor built into those.
19:57 Visibility at the rear is excellent as well, but keep in mind that if you do have the third
20:01 row up, it will reduce your visibility a little bit with the top of those headrests.
20:05 Now we don't have an official 0-100 time, but we've put it up against the stopwatch
20:10 to see how it goes.
20:12 We've done it twice because it is a little bit damp today.
20:14 Done one run with traction control on and then one run with traction control off.
20:18 [00:04:50] [silence]
20:34 [00:05:00]
20:44 So, the Kia Sorento, what do we think?
20:53 Look, I would buy this car and I think that's how I like to sum it up because the V6, I
20:58 said this with the Carnival, would be my pick.
21:00 It's such a smooth engine and is really fun to drive.
21:03 It kind of feels like it's doing stuff, whereas the diesel, it's a ripper engine as well,
21:07 but it is just sort of a little lazy and it's a diesel at the end of the day.
21:11 The only thing that lets it down is the fact that it's not available in all-wheel drive.
21:14 So, if you are towing or doing any sort of long-distance driving on snow and that kind
21:18 of thing, I would be going down the path of the diesel with the all-wheel drive.
21:21 But if you are just in and around the city, this is a really punchy engine and it is good
21:25 fun to drive.
21:25 Now, what are you compromising in terms of not going to the GT line?
21:29 Well, not a great deal, really.
21:30 You don't get that sort of full LCD cluster in the driver's display, which means you don't
21:35 get that blind spot camera.
21:36 But at the end of the day, I think this comes with pretty much all the features you need
21:40 that are going to keep the kids and family happy as well.
21:42 So, if you have been offered one of these instead of your GT line to speed up the order,
21:46 I would absolutely go for it.
21:47 And this is really one of my picks of the segment.
21:49 It is right up there.
21:51 Now, have you bought one?
21:52 Let me know what you think in the comments section below.
21:53 What's it like to live with as a daily?
21:55 And did you go for the V6 or did you go for the diesel?
21:58 I'm keen for your feedback.
