James Evans calls for tighter regulations on vape sales to under-18s

  • last year
James Evans says the sale of vapes to children and young people should be covered by tighter regulation.
The Brecon and Radnorshire MS said at the Senedd that vaping is a serious issue affecting young people across Wales.
He said vapes should not be sold to children or under-18s and that there is a need for more enforcement from trading standards departments.

00:00 One thing which I hope you agree with me on is that we actually need to see more enforcement
00:04 from our trade and standards departments as well.
00:06 These should not be sold to under 18 years of age people and young children.
00:12 So I'd just like to get your thoughts on whether we should be putting more money into our trade
00:15 and standards departments to make sure there is stricter enforcement around the sale of
00:20 vapes to young people.
00:23 Thank you for that.
00:24 I think, I certainly know that it's in the UK government's King's Speech legislation
00:32 that it would give new powers to local authority to enforce the age limits.
00:40 And I would actually prefer a UK wide piece of legislation because otherwise if we did
00:46 legislate only in Wales it could provoke smuggling of illegal products targeting Wales which
00:54 would obviously be a very perverse outcome.
00:58 But we can't rely on the UK government to make time for this because there seem to be
01:03 all sorts of other things on their minds at the moment.
01:07 So I hope that we can get cross party support for at least stopping our young people from
01:14 having their lives ruined by something that is apparently quite neutral but is actually
01:20 probably extremely harmful.
01:23 So I think my final remarks are to thank the Minister for his time.
