Disposable vapes will be banned in the UK as part of government plans to tackle young people taking up e-cigarette habits.

This news was announced at the end of January this year, and comes as part of the government's response to its consultation on smoking and vaping, launched in October 2023.

This new law will ban disposable vapes, restrict flavours and introduce plain packaging so they don't appeal to children, and make it illegal for anyone born on or after January 1 2009 to purchase tobacco products to create a smoke-free generation.

The use of vapes and e-cigarettes in younger children is rising, and we asked people in Manchester for their thoughts on the ban.

00:07 This news was announced at the end of January this year and comes as part of the government's response to its consultation on smoking and vaping, launched in October 2023.
00:17 This new law will ban disposable vapes, restrict flavours and introduce plain packaging so they don't appeal to children, and make it illegal for anyone born on or after 1 January 2009 to purchase tobacco products, with the aim of creating a smoke-free generation.
00:33 The use of vapes and e-cigarettes in younger children is rising and we asked people in Manchester for their thoughts on the ban.
00:40 Absolutely, as you say, we didn't know when we first got them where they were going to lead to and as you say it's far too convenient for young people.
00:49 I can support vapes for people who are trying to give up smoking and to get it as a staged, managed thing, but not for young people. Vapes are just a no for me.
01:00 I don't really know because of course vaping is possibly better than actually smoking cigarettes, but as a long-term thing it's probably not very good for people.
01:11 So as regards tackling it, I'm not quite sure how you would tackle it. I'm not sure whether that will make a difference, I think it would remain to be seen.
01:21 I don't smoke, I'm a non-smoker. I have a grandson who smokes vapour, whatever they're called, cigarettes are they called? And I don't agree with them because they're just as harmful as cigarettes themselves.
01:35 Because they're still going into the lungs, they're still causing a lot of problems in the lungs. So to me on the long-term, I don't think it's a good idea.
01:44 I don't think they should. I think I see the amount of school children using vapes and they're disposed everywhere and it's not good for the children.
01:54 All those different flavours, you know, if I was young again I'd be attracted and I'd want to use them.
02:01 They do attract children because of the flavours, the colours, the packaging, the cheapness.
02:06 It's good that government want to do it, but if they can do it, the best thing is to eradicate vapes totally.
02:11 I'm the person to ask because I just recently had to stop because I couldn't breathe. I couldn't breathe.
02:19 As a bouncer outside, you're just vaping constantly and at some point it's like these oils create a cover on the top of your lungs, preventing the lungs from being able to absorb the oxygen.
02:35 You feel like you're going to die. You can't breathe. People used to say, "Don't smoke, don't do this." I cannot anymore.
02:43 To the point I got sick I used to get picked up by an ambulance because people don't understand this is very addictive.
02:49 Sometimes it's better to smoke cigarettes than to smoke those things because these oils, when they heat up, the damage they cause to your lungs.
