00:00 After the visit to America, President Bongbong Marcos announced that the joint maritime and air patrols of AFP and US Indo-Pacific Command in the West Philippine Sea have started.
00:10 The President also said that he will bring a stronger alliance with America and other countries to defend our territory.
00:17 That is what Van Maylina is aiming for.
00:23 Following the Philippines' return from America, President Bongbong Marcos announced that the joint maritime and air patrols of AFP and US Indo-Pacific Command in the West Philippine Sea have started.
00:35 The joint patrols will continue until November 23.
00:39 This is part of a series of activities that the Mutual Defense Board has agreed to ensure the security of the region.
00:45 The so-called joint patrols have been cooking for a long time in the latest concrete developments that continue to encourage the support of America in the Philippines in dealing with the rising tensions in the West Philippine Sea.
00:56 In his arrival last night, one of the President's promises is that he will strengthen his alliance with America and other countries in the face of the tensions in the Philippines in the West Philippine Sea.
01:05 We will be able to bring peace, stability, prosperity to the Indo-Pacific region as long as our partnerships are based on mutual trust and respect for one another as sovereign equals and that our actions are anchored in international law including the UNCLOS and the 2016 Arbitral Award.
01:25 Before the country's return, the President distributed in front of the Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies the rising tensions in the West Philippine Sea,
01:34 particularly the mentioned harassment and dangerous maneuvers of the China Coast Guard and Maritime Militia in the Philippines' resupply missions in the Aeongin Shoal,
01:41 and the illegal fishing, militarization of the West Philippine Sea, and the massive reclamation that is leading to the destruction of the dams.
01:49 There have been recent missions to Escoda and Romulo Reef, which revealed a direct correlation between the presence of maritime militia vessels and reef damage in those features.
02:03 If only for that, the impact on biodiversity and the environment, I'm afraid, are assessed as possibly already irreversible.
02:14 This impairs livelihoods, this imperils the future generations of Filipinos.
02:19 China is not in favor of the right to build structures in the region they are occupying.
02:24 China's stance and assertion on the South China Sea issue is based on sufficient history and legal basis.
02:30 China's construction activities on its own territory are completely within the scope of China's sovereignty. Other countries have no right to interfere.
02:39 At the same time, the Philippines will not give up even an inch of its territory, according to the President.
02:45 The country is negotiating for a separate code of conduct with its neighbor in ASEAN,
02:51 while waiting for a code of conduct between China and ASEAN, which has been in place for decades.
02:57 The progress has been rather slow, unfortunately.
03:00 And so we've taken the initiative to approach those other countries around ASEAN with whom we have existing territorial conflicts to make our own code of conduct.
03:13 For GMA Integrated News, Ivan Meirena, reporting for 24 Hours.
