Toyota has finally done it...they've introduced a four-cylinder diesel to the 2024 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series. In some markets the V8 is dead, but in Australia it will offer an automatic-only four-cylinder diesel or a manual-only V8 diesel.

Plus there are some design changes that join the ranks.

Transcript
00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:01 Toyota has just updated the 70 Series Land Cruiser.
00:04 They've added a four-cylinder diesel sacrilege
00:06 and automatic transmission.
00:08 So today I'm going to take you through
00:09 the exterior changes, the interior changes,
00:11 and the engine changes as well.
00:14 If you haven't done so already,
00:15 please subscribe to our channel and press the bell icon
00:17 so you can find out every single time one of these goes live.
00:20 But let's get right into the details.
00:21 Hey, by the way, they also announced a new Land Cruiser Prado,
00:26 a 250 Series.
00:27 So if you wanna see our video on that,
00:29 click up here to watch that.
00:30 But this is gonna be all about the mighty 70 Series.
00:32 I've got my iPad here to take you through
00:35 some of the changes.
00:36 Now, it looks interesting.
00:37 We saw some spy photos a little while ago,
00:39 and I thought, hmm, I wonder how they're gonna update this.
00:41 And they've kind of, I don't know,
00:43 looks like they've gone to AliExpress
00:45 and just bought some LED headlights.
00:47 It looks a little bit strange.
00:48 So I'll run you through the changes.
00:50 So up the front here, halogen lights are gone.
00:53 They've put in this LED lighting setup.
00:57 So you can see an LED running light on the outside
00:59 and then an LED headlight there in the centre.
01:03 I don't know, to me, it just looks a little bit cheap
01:04 and chintzy, but I guess it is what it is.
01:07 Toyota badge in the centre there.
01:08 And what you'll also notice as well
01:10 is a little radar sensor there.
01:11 So we don't know yet they are fitting the 70 Series
01:15 with radar cruise control,
01:17 or whether this is part of the autonomous
01:18 emergency braking system,
01:19 which was recently fitted to this.
01:21 But it is an interesting addition there as well.
01:24 Chrome remains on the bumper there.
01:26 We recently reviewed the 70 Series
01:27 and it has quite a unique and old design setup to it.
01:32 Indicators there and there on the side as well.
01:36 And then a snorkel, which is fitted as standard as well,
01:39 which is good to see.
01:40 Now, another interesting point as well on the front here,
01:44 they have introduced a new four-cylinder diesel engine
01:46 and that is a carryover from the Hilux
01:48 that I'll run you through in just a second,
01:49 but that has meant different cooling requirements.
01:51 So the engine bay looks a little bit different.
01:53 The only engine they offered in this up until today
01:56 was a turbocharged V8 diesel.
01:58 So there is significantly more room under the bonnet there,
02:01 which is good to see in terms of modifications
02:03 and stuff like that.
02:04 From a side profile standpoint,
02:07 we'll jump over here.
02:08 This is interesting.
02:09 So the wheels look to me a little bit different.
02:12 So it's a darker setup there.
02:13 It still retains the auto locking hubs there in the center.
02:16 So it means you get front and rear diff locks
02:19 like it had previously.
02:20 Still keyed entry there.
02:23 You do have keyless entry,
02:24 but it'll be a key start
02:25 and also manually adjustable mirrors as well,
02:29 which is a bit of a throwback to older cars,
02:31 but it's something that has been a mainstay there
02:34 for 70 series for quite some time.
02:36 If you have a look at the rear here,
02:37 it doesn't look like they've actually spaced it out at all.
02:39 It seems to just be an engine change.
02:41 A lot of people that buy these complain
02:43 about needing to install spacers on the rear axle there
02:46 to have it pushing out a little bit.
02:47 This seems to be the exact same setup without any changes.
02:50 And it also means you get that same overhang
02:53 over the rear axle there as well.
02:55 Doesn't appear to be any great differences there.
02:57 I suspect they will actually do some changes to the ride.
03:00 So with a different engine,
03:01 the four cylinder diesel is going to be significantly lighter
03:04 than the V8 diesel.
03:05 So I think that's gonna mean also an adjustment there
03:08 to the ride and handling tune of this vehicle.
03:10 So it'll be interesting to see
03:11 if it does actually feel like it performs differently
03:13 when you do get behind the wheel of it.
03:15 In terms of other exterior changes,
03:17 there isn't really a great deal here.
03:19 I can't tell from this image,
03:21 but it appears they've gone down the path
03:22 of LED fog lights as well.
03:24 Prior to this, they weren't an LED setup.
03:26 So it looks like they may have fitted those to this
03:28 to just give it a slightly more
03:31 modern appearance there as well.
03:33 That's what it looks like when it's driving.
03:34 Nothing sort of too crazy there.
03:36 And again, a little bit of off-roading.
03:38 It all looks pretty straightforward there.
03:40 Let's jump to the inside.
03:42 Actually, before we jump to the inside,
03:44 I'll show you the wagon here as well,
03:46 just so you can get a bit of a visual on that.
03:47 I have absolutely no idea what that is.
03:50 I didn't actually notice this until now.
03:53 Not sure what that side vent is.
03:54 I haven't seen that before.
03:55 It actually looks like it opens.
03:56 It looks like it's on a hinge, which is kind of bizarre.
04:00 So this looks like a Japanese market vehicle.
04:02 So that might be something that is specific
04:04 to the Japanese market, but it is quite an odd one.
04:07 Just notice this as well.
04:08 I don't know if the current generation of 70 Series
04:13 actually has this same setup.
04:15 From memory, there was actually a taillight there
04:17 in 70 Series.
04:18 So I don't know, again,
04:19 whether this is a Japanese market thing
04:20 or whether they've actually changed that for some reason.
04:24 It now just seems to have a blanking plate on it.
04:26 So yeah, something interesting there.
04:30 Let's jump inside the cabin now
04:32 and have a look at the changes here.
04:33 We'll actually go to the Australian market car first.
04:35 Look at this, automatic transmission.
04:37 So again, I'll run you through the engine changes in a sec,
04:39 but you can see they've adopted an automatic transmission.
04:41 Prior to this, you could actually get
04:43 an automatic transmission as an aftermarket thing,
04:45 and it would actually be a great mate to the V8 diesel
04:48 'cause it ups the torque output as well.
04:50 The weak point was the clutch in these.
04:51 So now added an auto, which will be exclusively available
04:55 to the new four-cylinder diesel.
04:57 But I guess that is a good thing
04:58 for some of the companies that buy these.
04:59 If you have employees that don't know how to drive a manual
05:01 for whatever strange reason,
05:03 at least you have that point covered.
05:05 USB-C, so again, changing away from USB-A,
05:09 giving it a little bit more, I guess, modern amendments.
05:12 A power and haul button just here.
05:14 So that was the same thing that we've seen
05:16 in the Hilux previously.
05:18 This just makes the throttle slightly more responsive there.
05:21 And also a hill descent control,
05:23 which has been added to the automatic version
05:25 of this as well.
05:26 The infotainment system looks a little bit different too.
05:29 So they've gone down the path
05:30 of a different infotainment system I've never seen before.
05:33 So they've removed the knob
05:34 that was in the 70 series previously.
05:36 That means adjusting the volume.
05:38 It appears you're gonna have to use these things
05:41 off to the side here, which just seems like a bit of a pain.
05:44 I don't know why they didn't just keep the knob there.
05:45 It doesn't seem to be a massive advancement,
05:48 but it does look like they've added Apple CarPlay though,
05:50 which means this will be slightly more civilised.
05:52 Now, this is also a little bit tricky to see as well.
05:55 But if you have a look over here in the gauge cluster,
05:57 it looks like it's an analogue gauge in this section,
06:00 but this part here looks digital
06:01 'cause you can see a temperature readout there.
06:04 You can also see a clock as well.
06:06 So it looks like they've gone down the path
06:08 of adding a slight digital element there.
06:10 And if I have a look at this press release here,
06:11 what they're saying is that that side of it
06:15 has a 4.2 inch multi-information display.
06:18 And then the multimedia infotainment system
06:20 is a 6.7 inch display that comes with wired Apple CarPlay
06:24 and Android Auto.
06:25 So just making it a little more modern.
06:27 I can't also see here the addition of radar cruise control
06:32 because normally it's a button here that you change
06:35 on Hilux to adjust how close you follow the vehicle in front.
06:38 I can't see that.
06:39 So it might not actually have radar cruise control.
06:41 That could have just been on the front bumper there,
06:43 just a safety feature.
06:44 But I can see this, a lane departure warning,
06:47 which seems to be a new addition to 70 series.
06:51 Outside of that, the interior looks pretty similar to me.
06:53 You do have the switch gear down here
06:55 for the front and rear diff locks.
06:57 And you also have in this next image that we pop to here,
07:01 you can see the side of that automatic transmission
07:03 just there, and also the manual gear change system
07:07 for the four-wheel drive system.
07:09 So it goes from two-wheel drive high range
07:12 to four-wheel drive high range
07:13 into four-wheel drive low range as well.
07:15 So outside of that, the interior looks pretty similar
07:18 to what it was previously.
07:19 If we go to the Japanese market car,
07:22 gives us a bit of a closer look there
07:23 at that LCD cluster off to the side.
07:26 So you can see there that it's just this side section here.
07:29 All of this stuff remains analog gauges.
07:31 Love the wood grain here on the Japanese market car.
07:34 Very impressive.
07:35 And then idle up switch and a manual DPF burn switch
07:39 down the side there as well.
07:40 So they've definitely made this a little more modern.
07:42 You can see the Japanese market car
07:44 doesn't actually have a radio at all.
07:46 So consider yourself lucky
07:48 you're getting a radio in Australia.
07:50 So yeah.
07:51 Now let's talk about engines.
07:52 Toyota will retain the V8 diesel in some markets.
07:54 So Australia will retain that 4.5 litre turbocharged
07:58 V8 diesel only available
07:59 with a five-speed manual transmission.
08:01 Makes 151 kilowatts of power and 430 newton meters of torque.
08:05 Not exactly groundbreaking there.
08:07 The engine they have introduced to this though
08:10 is the four-cylinder diesel from the Hilux.
08:13 It is not the mild hybrid version.
08:14 It's just the standard version.
08:16 That means it produces 500 newton meters of torque
08:19 and that's made it to that six-speed automatic transmission
08:22 150 kilowatts of power, 70 newton meters more than the V8.
08:26 So it does give you an idea of how old the V8 is
08:28 in comparison to the four-cylinder.
08:30 According to Toyota, this will start to arrive
08:32 here in Australia Q4 2023.
08:35 So if you actually do have a Land Cruiser 70 series on order
08:38 at one point there, they stopped all of the orders.
08:41 It is likely that you're gonna be switched
08:42 into one of these new ones.
08:43 Make sure you elect for the V8 if you do want the V8.
08:46 Otherwise there is a chance they will actually put you
08:48 in the four-cylinder.
08:49 All of these changes are also going to mean
08:51 that I suspect the price is going to go up.
08:53 They haven't mentioned the price here in this press release
08:55 but I suspect that means the price is going to go up
08:59 which means that it is going to be more expensive
09:02 if you have placed an order.
09:03 So if you do have a contract
09:04 make sure they honour the existing price.
09:06 If you don't have a contract
09:07 you're likely to be paying more.
09:08 And just having a little closer look here
09:10 at the press release, it actually says here
09:11 that lane departure alert, road sign assist
09:15 which is for speed signs and automatic high beam
09:18 a part of that safety suite
09:19 that they've fitted to the vehicle now.
09:21 So that has been your first look
09:22 at the new Toyota Land Cruiser 70 series.
09:25 Sorry, this was kind of hobbled together.
09:26 This only just dropped
09:28 and I'm kind of just getting across it all at the moment.
09:30 What do you reckon about the design?
09:31 Do you think it looks good?
09:33 Not exactly the biggest fan of it.
09:34 I think it looks a little bit funny
09:35 but I guess people are going to buy it anyway.
09:38 What do you think about them introducing
09:39 a four cylinder diesel?
09:40 Do you think they should have just stuck with the V8?
09:42 I am keen for your feedback.
09:44 Let me know in the comment section below what you think.
