Why I wouldn't review the Tesla Model Y Performance: This is a VERY detailed review of the 2023 Tesla Model Y Performance. It has just launched in Australia and as a Model Y owner I wanted to give you an objective review so you can get a better understanding of whether you should buy it or not.

00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:01 So I own a Tesla Model Y.
00:03 They've just launched this,
00:05 which is the performance version.
00:06 So it's been available overseas for a while now,
00:08 but it is new to Australia
00:10 and it's now joining the base Model Y.
00:12 In addition to the long range in the lineup,
00:15 I thought, let's have a drive of it,
00:16 see what it's like from a Model Y owner's point of view
00:19 and whether it is worth actually upgrading.
00:21 This also has a new comfort suspension
00:23 that was fitted to these after I got mine delivered.
00:26 So I'll be really keen to see
00:27 what that's like to drive as well.
00:28 This competes with things like the Kia EV6 GT
00:32 and the Ioniq 5N, which will be launched later this year.
00:36 It has kind of been unique in this segment
00:38 as a performance SUV
00:40 that is now sort of joined by other brands as well.
00:42 It's priced at a little under $95,000,
00:45 but if that's too expensive,
00:46 the whole range kicks off at just under 70 grand.
00:49 Today, we're gonna do a detailed review of the Blue Rocket.
00:52 If you do want to skip ahead to other parts of this review,
00:55 you can use the time codes on the screen,
00:56 or if you're on YouTube,
00:57 you can scroll down and use the chapters below.
00:59 And if you haven't done so already,
01:00 I'd really appreciate it if you could subscribe to our channel
01:02 and press the bell icon
01:03 so you can find out every single time we're driving a Tesla
01:06 or I report on my Tesla.
01:08 Okay, so let's start with the exterior.
01:12 This is available in five different colours.
01:13 All but white is going to cost you extra,
01:16 with red being the most expensive colour.
01:18 I really like this blue.
01:19 It looks great in person,
01:20 especially on these black wheels as well.
01:23 I think it looks really nice.
01:24 In terms of the visual differences,
01:26 you can actually get the base model Y in Australia
01:28 with the 20-inch alloy wheels
01:29 that look very similar to this.
01:30 So sometimes when you do spot these on the road,
01:33 just because it has this style of wheel,
01:35 it doesn't mean that it is the performance.
01:36 You can tell the performance aside from the others
01:38 'cause it's got dual motor on the back with an underline.
01:40 You also have red brakes here as well.
01:42 Terms of the rest of the design,
01:44 Australia's lagging behind the rest of the world
01:46 at the moment, and I don't know why,
01:47 but Tesla is actually removing parking sensors
01:50 on the front and the rear of their cars,
01:52 and instead relying only on Tesla Vision
01:55 to process all of your parking distances.
01:57 So far, the results of that have been pretty terrible.
01:59 A guy in the UK published a video,
02:01 an independent guy published a video
02:04 about how bad the parking sensors are under Vision.
02:06 The good news, though, is that Tesla
02:08 obviously updates its software very regularly,
02:10 so it means that that stuff should improve over time,
02:13 but ultimately, I don't know why
02:14 they didn't just stick with these.
02:15 These work perfectly fine, and they have for years.
02:18 In terms of the rest of the design,
02:19 it's all pretty straightforward down the front.
02:20 There you've got the Tesla logo up the top there.
02:23 You've got this lower section here for cooling,
02:25 and then also the headlights.
02:27 So they are full LED headlights.
02:29 They are auto high beam.
02:30 That function, certainly in my Model Y,
02:33 just doesn't work at all, and it's pretty frustrating,
02:35 'cause often it'll blind drivers in high beam
02:38 when they're approaching you.
02:39 Sometimes it won't switch the high beams on
02:41 when there's no one in front of you,
02:42 and then I guess the most frustrating part about it
02:45 is that if you do have autopilot set at night,
02:47 it defaults to automatic high beams,
02:49 and because it doesn't work very well,
02:51 you kind of just don't end up using autopilot at night,
02:53 'cause you don't wanna blind other drivers.
02:55 This actual cluster, though,
02:56 has functionality for matrix LEDs,
02:59 so they've got the whole setup there that they need.
03:01 I think it's just a software limitation at the moment,
03:02 and hopefully something they can roll out pretty soon.
03:05 Let's whip around to the side here.
03:08 By the way, throughout this review,
03:09 I'm gonna sprinkle in some stuff about my ownership,
03:12 and what it's like, and how it should compare
03:14 to your upcoming ownership.
03:16 Tesla is upgrading the camera quality in these as well,
03:20 so it's going from a camera that I think
03:21 was under two megapixels to one that's around five megapixels,
03:24 so it'll mean better processing for the car's computers,
03:28 and also better recording for things like sentry footage,
03:30 which I'll run you through later on.
03:31 Down the side here, you've got 21-inch alloy wheels,
03:34 and they're on a pretty sporty tire,
03:36 so this car has a set of Pirelli P Zeros on it.
03:39 I think I've seen other cars with Pilot Sports.
03:41 You can tell the performance aside from others
03:43 with these red brakes, so up the front here,
03:45 it's a four-piston caliper on a 355-mil rotor.
03:49 This is a Brembo brake.
03:51 The rears used to be Brembo as well,
03:53 and I'll explain what has changed over there
03:55 in just a second.
03:56 I really do like this wheel design, though.
03:57 That matte finish looks sensational.
04:00 Just be careful of curbs, though,
04:01 because if you do gutter-ash these,
04:03 there really isn't much clearance there.
04:05 You're going to absolutely destroy them,
04:06 but they look fantastic there in person.
04:08 So, a little camera here for your side camera.
04:10 There's also an indicator built into there as well.
04:13 Up the top here, you'll notice there is no indicator
04:15 in this wing mirror like they do in a lot of other cars.
04:16 There's also no camera under there as well,
04:19 because this doesn't have a 360 camera,
04:21 which is a little bit disappointing in my opinion,
04:23 given most other cars in this price bracket
04:25 do have that technology.
04:27 The door handles, I've talked about this
04:29 in other Tesla products as well,
04:30 but you push that and then pull the door handle,
04:33 and that opens the car.
04:34 I like the fact that this is all black around here as well.
04:37 Really gives it a nice sort of covert design.
04:40 Camera built into here as well.
04:41 This is also where you tap the key
04:43 when you lock and unlock the car.
04:45 Based on my ownership experience, though,
04:47 I don't think I even know where my key card is.
04:50 I just use the phone to unlock the car all the time.
04:52 So, that's where you tap it.
04:53 Privacy glass, you get a full glass roof as well.
04:56 Now, the rear brakes, let me run you through these.
04:59 So, Tesla did a bit of a dodgy.
05:01 So, they used to have Brembo front and rear brakes.
05:04 Now, they've gone down the path
05:05 of a non-Brembo brake at the rear.
05:07 As a result of that, they've put this dress cover over it
05:10 to make it look like the old one,
05:11 but it is actually different.
05:12 Not that big of a deal, given with EVs,
05:14 they're gonna be doing a lot of regen,
05:16 and most of your braking is through the front axle anyway.
05:19 So, not the end of the world,
05:20 but yeah, a little bit frustrating.
05:22 Okay, so come around to the back of the car with me.
05:24 So, around the back here, sorry the car's so dirty,
05:26 it was raining this morning.
05:27 You have full LED taillights.
05:30 This is the mention that I made earlier
05:32 of that red underline on dual motor.
05:34 That gives you an idea
05:35 that this is in fact the performance variant.
05:36 You get this carbon, I don't know if it's real carbon,
05:40 but carbon-esque boot lip on the back there.
05:43 And then the rest is sort of pretty straightforward.
05:45 If you do fit a tow bar, this section here pops out,
05:48 and that's where your tow bar sits.
05:49 It has a brake towing capacity of 1600 kilograms,
05:53 and then you have that lower diffuser down there as well.
05:55 So, let me know what you reckon
05:57 about this Model Y performance.
05:59 So, if you have a look at something like a Kia EV6 GT,
06:01 it kind of looks the same as the rest of the EV6 range.
06:04 That's what Tesla's done here with the Model Y.
06:06 It kind of just looks like any other Model Y,
06:07 unless you know exactly what you're looking for.
06:10 I think the Ioniq 5N will look different,
06:12 so that they've gone down the path
06:13 of giving it a bit more sort of substance and presence.
06:16 So, I'll be keen to see what that finally looks like,
06:18 but let me know what you reckon
06:19 about the Model Y performance
06:20 down in the comments section below.
06:22 Okay, so we are inside the Model Y performance.
06:26 I'd start off with the key at this point,
06:28 but there is no key.
06:29 It actually all just runs through your phone,
06:31 and I'm gonna quickly just mention
06:33 just how good this app is.
06:35 So, I have a Ford Ranger Raptor,
06:36 and we've got our Model Y.
06:38 The Ford app, in comparison to the Tesla app, is terrible.
06:41 Like, anything I do on the Ford app
06:42 takes forever to get to the car.
06:44 With the Tesla app, I can just literally press a button here
06:49 and it will happen immediately.
06:50 So, for example, watch this.
06:52 You've got that on pause.
06:53 I'll hit play.
06:55 Starts like immediately after.
06:57 Volume.
06:58 (upbeat music)
07:00 Like, it is just an unreal setup,
07:02 and it means that when you do come to the car to unlock it,
07:05 you literally grab the door handle,
07:06 it unlocks the car immediately.
07:08 There's no waiting around.
07:09 In terms of other functions of the app,
07:11 you have the ability to look at the live camera view.
07:12 So, when sentry mode is running,
07:14 you can actually see what's happening
07:16 at the front, back, and sides of the car.
07:18 In addition to that, you can control everything from the app
07:21 from opening and closing the car,
07:22 giving people permission to drive the car.
07:25 Even though they don't have the key,
07:26 you can set a pin to drive the car.
07:28 Open and close the door, honk the horn, flash the lights,
07:31 set all your charging speeds.
07:33 You can even send navigation destinations to the car.
07:36 So, from Google Maps, I can basically
07:38 send a destination to the car.
07:40 So, the second I get in, it's navigating to that location.
07:43 You can schedule your charging.
07:45 You can also set things like speed limits here,
07:47 valet mode, and then you can also buy
07:50 some of the upgrades for the car here as well.
07:52 So, it is an excellent app,
07:54 and this is probably one of my favorite features of the car.
07:57 The rest of this stuff is pretty cool,
07:58 but this app really sets this vehicle apart
08:01 from anything else on the road.
08:02 It is amazing.
08:03 So, I'll put that down.
08:05 Let's talk about some of the materials they use here.
08:08 So, in our first Tesla, we had a Model 3 Performance.
08:12 We went with a white interior.
08:13 I liked it.
08:14 The seats were actually pretty easy to keep clean,
08:15 but I would have preferred this open-pore woodgrain trim.
08:18 The white just gets this sort of cheap-looking stuff
08:20 that sits around here that is white.
08:22 This setup is much better with the black seats
08:24 because you get the open-pore woodgrain,
08:25 and to me, it looks just a little bit nicer.
08:27 The materials around the cabin
08:29 have improved significantly as well.
08:30 So, throwing back to our Model 3 Performance,
08:32 it had a sort of piano black finish,
08:34 and it was very hard to keep clean.
08:36 It scratched really easily.
08:37 They did away with that and went down the path
08:39 of this matte finish.
08:40 You can even see here with these charging pads for the phone,
08:43 these have like an Alcantara trim on them as well.
08:45 So, really like the way that looks.
08:47 All of this stuff here is soft to the touch,
08:50 even though you're not gonna be touching this all that often,
08:51 but that's soft to the touch as well.
08:53 So, all of that stuff is really great,
08:55 and it looks and feels nice and premium.
08:58 What about your build quality?
08:59 So, this car, I've sort of poked around it,
09:02 and the build quality is excellent.
09:05 Our car has had no issues with build quality either.
09:07 I think those days are behind Tesla.
09:09 They're now building cars that are really well assembled
09:11 and that don't really have the dramas they used to have
09:14 when they started doing all of this.
09:15 So, I think that is all gone.
09:17 What about our door slam?
09:18 So, this is one of the things I love about the car,
09:21 'cause it doesn't have the frame around the door.
09:23 Then when you do close it,
09:24 it's got a bit of a tinny sound to it.
09:27 It sounds a little bit cheap,
09:28 so it's probably something that hopefully
09:30 one day they can improve.
09:31 In terms of actually opening and closing the door,
09:33 you have a button up the top here that releases the door.
09:35 Then you have an emergency release there as well to open it
09:38 if you do ever lose power to the car.
09:40 But there is a slight problem with the second row
09:43 that I'll run you through in just a moment.
09:45 Okay, let's talk infotainment.
09:47 It's pretty much the only electronic thing
09:49 to talk about here,
09:50 because everything is controlled here on the screen
09:53 or on the steering wheel.
09:54 So, this will probably be the detail overload,
09:57 but I'll just run you through a lot of this stuff
09:59 and what I appreciate as functions of the car.
10:02 So, here on the sort of default home screen,
10:04 you have your satellite navigation.
10:07 So, this uses Google Maps,
10:08 and you can see here that you can go satellite overlays.
10:11 You can also include traffic or exclude traffic,
10:15 depending on where you are.
10:16 And then if you zoom in,
10:17 you kind of get more detail in terms of where you are
10:20 and what's sort of happening around you.
10:22 You can then hit this button here as well
10:24 that immediately tells you where the superchargers are.
10:27 It's worth keeping in mind as well
10:29 that it doesn't always just show you Tesla superchargers.
10:32 So, you can actually see other brands in here as well.
10:35 It sort of varies in terms of what it'll show you,
10:39 depending on a set of criteria that Tesla has.
10:42 And you can also set the different charge speeds
10:43 you wanna see here as well.
10:45 So, you can see how sort of effective that is.
10:47 And then I'll route you through to the supercharger.
10:49 If you do actually select a faster DC charger,
10:53 this will start preheating the battery on your journey
10:55 as well, so it can charge a little bit quicker as it goes,
10:58 which I'm a big fan of.
10:59 In terms of navigation and stuff,
11:01 it is very quick and easy and just works.
11:05 So, you put in the destination,
11:07 whether it's an address or a place,
11:09 it'll find it and then it'll navigate to there.
11:11 If you do need to charge along the way,
11:12 it will tell you where you need to go to charge.
11:15 I love this as well.
11:16 So, profiles.
11:18 Because I own a Tesla, it shows up here my profile.
11:22 And this profile is actually synced to our other car.
11:25 So, when I select that, it will recall every other setting
11:28 that I have in our other car.
11:30 So, it means that I can switch between different cars,
11:33 even if they're not my own, sign into my profile,
11:35 and then it will bring up all of those settings just for me,
11:37 which I think is pretty cool.
11:38 This little thing up here indicates
11:40 that sentry mode's running.
11:41 So, that's the feature that will basically record around you
11:44 if it detects an impact or motion around the car.
11:47 I love it because if someone runs into you
11:49 while you're not there, it'll record it all
11:50 to the USB stick that sits inside the glove box.
11:53 So, it's there forever.
11:54 And it means that you have evidence if anything goes wrong.
11:58 It's also a dash cam function too.
12:00 Once you've done driving,
12:01 you can actually pull up all of that footage as well
12:03 and download it if you need to.
12:06 Other functions you have here,
12:08 they store all of your favorites down at the bottom.
12:10 You can adjust the order of these as well.
12:13 But only through just the audio system.
12:14 You have Spotify, and you basically get
12:17 as part of a premium package,
12:19 which you have to pay, I think it's around $10 a month
12:21 for you get access to Spotify.
12:23 And that means you can listen to anything you want,
12:26 basically, you just search for it,
12:27 start playing it, and away you go.
12:29 In terms of other audio sources,
12:30 you have Bluetooth radio, which has FM and DAB digital radio.
12:34 You have karaoke, Tidal, TuneIn,
12:36 and now Apple Music as well.
12:38 There is no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto,
12:40 which I'm a little bit miffed by.
12:42 I reckon I just need to add that in
12:43 because I use things like Waze,
12:44 and it's just much easier to do on Apple CarPlay
12:47 than it is on here.
12:48 So, if we flick down over here to that full menu,
12:51 that's where you access the dash cam,
12:52 so you can start recalling footage from around you.
12:55 You can see this is us right now.
12:58 And then before the car was plugged up to the charger,
13:01 you can also then pull up all your Sentry Mode stuff as well.
13:04 In here as well, you're gonna find your energy maps.
13:07 So, this is a really sort of fascinating feature
13:10 because what it does is it tells you
13:12 how much energy you've consumed
13:15 and how much it predicted you would consume.
13:18 So, it's saying here that we used 11 kilometres less
13:20 than the trip projection,
13:22 simply because we were able to optimise things
13:24 like driving and climate.
13:25 Whereas if you are driving up a hill, for example,
13:28 if I drive from Melbourne to Ballarat,
13:30 it's an elevation change that goes up.
13:32 You see here that it eats into your driving range
13:35 and it means that you're actually using more energy
13:38 than the car is saying that you're using.
13:40 So, I think this is an interesting feature.
13:42 It's a bit sort of pointless
13:44 if you're chewing through too much energy
13:46 because ultimately you'll find out about it after
13:48 and there's not really a great deal you can do about it.
13:50 So, in addition to that, down here, you've got Calendar,
13:53 which you can sync with your phone messages.
13:56 That functionality and the voice recognition functionality
13:59 really doesn't work very well.
14:00 It just has no understanding of what you're saying.
14:03 So, often when you ask it to do something,
14:05 it'll just do the opposite of what you think it's gonna do.
14:07 You then have other features that, to be honest,
14:09 I don't really use as an owner.
14:11 So, a lot of people say,
14:12 "Well, you use these while you're charging,"
14:14 but I just plug the car in at home
14:15 so I don't really sit there watching things,
14:17 but you can do Netflix, Disney, YouTube, Twitch,
14:20 and there's tutorials there,
14:22 and then you have games as well that you can play
14:24 while you're sitting inside the car,
14:25 and then other silly features like Fart Modes
14:28 and all this other stuff.
14:30 So, that is where you access those functions.
14:33 And outside of that, you have a web browser built into here.
14:35 It's not the best browser 'cause it's a bit slow and clunky,
14:37 so it doesn't really work that well.
14:39 And the rest of the functions here I've already spoken about.
14:42 I know I've spoken a lot here,
14:43 but I'll just run you through the last sort of basics.
14:45 When you are driving, you'll see here
14:46 that this display changes a little bit.
14:48 It'll show what's going on around us.
14:50 Can also switch between percentages
14:52 and driving range up at the top there.
14:54 Climate control functions are all done
14:56 through this screen here.
14:58 A lot of people have complained about
15:00 adjustment of air vents and that it is fiddly,
15:03 but to be honest, you adjust them once when you get the car
15:06 and you never really touch them again,
15:08 so that's not really something
15:09 I've had too much of a drama with.
15:11 You then have other features for your climate controls,
15:13 such as keeping the climate running, overheat protection.
15:16 You have Dog Mode, Camp Mode as well,
15:18 and then you can adjust front and rear climate.
15:20 You have heated seats, front two seats,
15:22 and also all three rear seats and the steering wheel as well.
15:25 So yeah, it is a pretty awesome setup there
15:29 and all sort of fairly straightforward to use.
15:31 I don't love the fact that it is quite fiddly
15:33 to use while you're driving,
15:34 and we'll run through that when we do go for a drive.
15:36 I'll give you an example of some of that stuff.
15:39 And then finally, I promise,
15:41 is all of the settings for the car,
15:43 which you can change through here.
15:45 So you can sort of go through
15:46 and adjust everything as you go.
15:48 Now, the last thing I wanna show you
15:50 is something I literally only just stumbled across last night
15:53 and just from an engineer and tech point of view,
15:56 I reckon it is bloody cool.
15:57 So if you go down here to Software
16:00 and you push and hold this on Dual Motor,
16:04 it comes up asking for an access code.
16:06 And if you type in Service,
16:08 it enters the car's service mode.
16:12 Once it's in that mode, you get some incredible stats.
16:15 So you can see the vehicle's VIN, odometer reading,
16:18 the firmware that it's running and that type of thing.
16:20 But in here, you can just do
16:22 a stack of really fascinating things.
16:25 I love this.
16:26 If I go down to the thermal controls,
16:29 have a look at this.
16:30 How cool is that?
16:31 So it's basically now telling us
16:33 while the cooling system is running
16:34 how all of the interior components are operating,
16:38 the temperatures, what the compressor's doing.
16:41 And if you go over here to the refrigerant system,
16:43 you can see it all moving around the car there.
16:46 Coolant system as well.
16:49 It is seriously cool.
16:50 And then you go over here to charging.
16:51 You can actually do a battery test
16:53 to see what your 12 volts
16:55 and your high voltage battery is like.
16:57 You can get a better idea of how healthy it all is.
17:00 Just a really great setup.
17:02 And I love the fact that as an owner,
17:03 you can actually play with some of this stuff
17:05 and get a better idea of it.
17:06 It is obviously designed here just for the service personnel.
17:10 And if you do play with anything here,
17:12 you might break stuff.
17:13 But I just love the fact that you can play with this stuff
17:15 if you do want to.
17:17 I'll also just quickly point out the sound system as well.
17:20 Yeah, I test a lot of cars
17:21 and this is well and truly one of the best
17:24 standard sound systems you will hear in a new car today.
17:27 It is absolutely unreal.
17:28 So you have 13 speakers, one subwoofer, two amplifiers.
17:33 I get some proper stuff.
17:34 So when you do crank the beats,
17:35 it is quite an immersive experience.
17:37 So really big fan of that.
17:39 And if you are a fan of your audio,
17:40 you're gonna love the sound system as well.
17:42 Let's talk safety tech.
17:43 So Tesla has done away with radar
17:46 and now uses just Tesla Vision,
17:48 which is all the camera systems.
17:50 I've gotta be honest, it doesn't really work that well
17:54 in the sense that when you're using cruise control,
17:57 which is now controlled by the camera system
18:00 and this is just standard autopilot,
18:02 you can spend something like $10,000 on full self-driving,
18:06 which is where it changes lanes for you and stuff.
18:09 We had the chance to test that out over Christmas
18:11 and it was, I'm genuinely shocked
18:15 it's actually available in the car 'cause it was so bad.
18:18 So yeah, it's something they might fix over time,
18:21 but yeah, I just would not bother wasting 10 grand on it.
18:23 The car does come standard with autopilot,
18:25 which is effectively radar cruise control,
18:27 just without a radar.
18:28 So it'll hold lane centering for you
18:30 and keep a set distance between you and the car in front.
18:33 Problem is it's quite indecisive.
18:35 I have semi-occasional phantom braking issues
18:38 with our Model Y,
18:40 had phantom braking issues with the Model 3 as well.
18:42 So that means when you approach
18:43 like an overpass or something,
18:44 it'll think it's a stationary object
18:46 and it'll hit the brakes.
18:47 There was even a guy that in Sydney,
18:50 his car tried to slam the brakes on for a pedestrian
18:53 that wasn't like in front of the car at all
18:55 and he caused a pileup.
18:56 So yeah, it is a system
18:58 that you need to be watching all the time
19:00 and I'm always ready to take over
19:02 because I just don't trust that it's gonna work well.
19:04 It also does strange things
19:05 like when you are following another car
19:07 and you go to pass it by putting the indicator on,
19:09 it doesn't do what a regular radar system does,
19:11 which is check the next lane,
19:12 see that it's free and then start accelerating.
19:14 I think we'll actually try and demo this later on
19:16 so you can get a bit of an idea of what I'm talking about.
19:18 So yeah, that stuff kind of really needs to work better,
19:22 but it does have autonomous emergency braking forwards.
19:24 It doesn't have it in reverse, which is disappointing.
19:27 Most new cars on the market today
19:28 have rear cross traffic alert,
19:30 which is a radar-based system.
19:31 Obviously this not using radar doesn't have that.
19:34 It also doesn't have any blind spot monitoring,
19:36 which is again, pretty disappointing
19:37 'cause when you put your indicator on,
19:38 you get the camera come up,
19:40 but I would prefer to just have a blind spot monitor running
19:43 in the wing mirror,
19:44 which is where you need to be doing a head check regardless.
19:47 It also now, if you're ordering one today,
19:49 no longer has front and rear parking sensors,
19:51 which I mentioned earlier.
19:53 On the camera front though,
19:54 it does have a sort of parking set up here
19:57 when you do pop it into reverse.
19:58 So I'll show you what that looks like.
20:00 So it's actually, the camera itself is really high quality.
20:03 So you can see there,
20:03 I can clearly see what my suitcase says.
20:06 Those guidelines move with the steering wheel.
20:09 Now this view is interesting.
20:09 So that's looking back down the side of the car.
20:12 Typically what you would do is set your wing mirror
20:15 to dip down so you can see how close you are to the curb.
20:17 But this view is actually great
20:18 'cause when you're reversing into the curb,
20:19 you can see exactly where it is.
20:21 And it's just a really seamless system.
20:23 And I find that this kind of array is fantastic.
20:27 And then when you pair it with this car,
20:28 which has the ultrasonic sensors,
20:30 you can really park quite easily without too many dramas.
20:33 And this is what the horn sounds like.
20:34 (horn honking)
20:36 Let's talk about practicality
20:37 and we'll start off with your connectivity.
20:38 So I mentioned before you have wireless phone charging
20:41 down the front here, which works well.
20:42 In here, you have another set of USB-C ports.
20:45 So there's two of them in there.
20:47 You also have a 12 volt outlet in here.
20:50 Terms of storing things.
20:52 So your phone can live there on the charger
20:55 or in the cup holders.
20:56 The cup holders.
20:57 So this is what it looks like.
20:59 So in terms of putting your coffee in,
21:01 fits okay in there.
21:02 It doesn't get de-lidded, which is great news.
21:05 And then in terms of our water bottle,
21:07 fits in there, but there are no teeth.
21:08 So it kind of just moves around a little bit.
21:10 Does fit inside the door pocket.
21:13 Let's try our big bottle as well.
21:15 See how that goes.
21:16 Yeah, that fits in there too, which is good news.
21:19 Now in terms of other storage, have a look at this.
21:20 You have just so much storage.
21:23 You've got this giant slot down here
21:25 that you can stick a whole bunch of stuff in.
21:27 Your center console is enormous as well.
21:30 And then you also have a glove box in here too,
21:33 which also has your USB port for the dash cam
21:37 and the sentry mode as well.
21:38 And that's sort of reasonably sized.
21:40 Okay, now comfort, let's chat about that.
21:42 You have dual zone automatic climate control
21:46 up the front here.
21:47 You also have heated seats for the front row,
21:49 heated steering wheel.
21:51 The seats themselves are really comfortable.
21:54 I've spent a fair bit of time in this car
21:56 and yeah, that's one of the things I love about it.
21:58 The seats are just nice and soft and supportive.
22:01 In terms of adjustments,
22:02 so they're both electrically adjustable.
22:04 You can go forwards or backwards.
22:06 Backrest can go forwards, backwards.
22:07 You can lift the front, you can lift the back.
22:10 You also have lumbar adjustment for the driver.
22:12 They did have lumbar adjustment for the passenger,
22:15 but they deleted that feature
22:16 because they said it wasn't used very often.
22:19 Something you set once and then don't use.
22:22 But the fact that it's not there, I think is just bizarre.
22:24 In fact, it's actually one of the things
22:25 that kind of annoys me with Tesla.
22:27 So they've removed that.
22:29 They removed the carpet that's in the front.
22:30 So it kind of has no grip on it
22:32 when you put stuff in there.
22:34 They removed the mobile connector,
22:35 which used to be standard.
22:36 You actually used to get a wall connector,
22:38 part of the car purchase price as well.
22:41 So they are just cutting these things out as they go.
22:44 And it does get a little bit frustrating over time
22:46 because you lose things
22:47 that you think should actually be standard.
22:49 So in terms of steering adjustment,
22:52 it's electrically adjustable,
22:54 and it's all done here through the screen.
22:56 So you basically set this,
22:58 and then you can basically move it up and down
23:00 using the controls there on the steering wheel.
23:03 It offers both tilt and reach adjustment.
23:05 And this is also where you adjust your mirrors
23:07 to using the same function there on the steering wheel.
23:10 Okay, second row of the Model Y.
23:13 This is probably the thing that I love
23:15 about this vehicle the most.
23:16 When we stepped up from Model 3 to Model Y,
23:19 look at the room in here.
23:20 Like, to be honest,
23:22 it is a strange looking car on the outside.
23:24 And I know that design is subjective,
23:25 but that strange look really affords them all of this space.
23:29 So my seat is pretty much all the way back,
23:31 and I've got loads of knee room.
23:33 Toe room is ridiculously good.
23:34 Headroom is excellent as well.
23:37 And you get this massive glass roof here.
23:39 The only downside to this glass roof
23:41 is that on really hot days,
23:42 it radiates so much heat into the cabin,
23:45 and it really does struggle to keep everything cool in here
23:48 'cause you're just constantly getting barraged with heat.
23:51 So I really wish there was like a cover
23:53 that came standard with this.
23:54 You have to buy it.
23:56 It's optional.
23:57 You're gonna go pay for that if you want it,
23:58 but at least there is a solution in place there.
24:01 Other cringe comforts,
24:02 you have map pockets in the back of the seats,
24:04 two USB-C ports, air vents here as well,
24:07 seat heating for all three seats,
24:10 ISOFIX points with three top tether points.
24:12 You have a center armrest here with two cup holders.
24:15 They have rubber teeth on them,
24:17 so you can just bottle in there if you want to.
24:19 And then you also have the ability
24:20 to drop this center section down as well
24:23 to give you access to the boot if you need to.
24:25 Now, something I did mention in our last Model Y review
24:29 that I'm not a fan of,
24:29 but they have kind of addressed is this situation here.
24:33 So that's the button to release the door.
24:36 You push that, the door comes open,
24:38 but that needs power to work.
24:39 If in the event you're in a car accident
24:41 or something happens where that button is no longer active,
24:45 there's no emergency release here
24:46 like there is at the front.
24:48 It's located down here underneath this piece of rubber,
24:51 and then you've got a little button
24:53 that you have to get out of the way.
24:56 And then under there is like a little tab
24:59 that you have to pull.
25:00 It's the most ridiculous process in the world.
25:02 And I don't understand why I couldn't
25:03 have just integrated it here
25:05 so that you can just get out if you need to.
25:07 So that is a little bit disappointing
25:09 that you do have so much of a faff around there.
25:11 But on the other hand, it is handy.
25:14 I've got my daughter that sits in this seat in our car.
25:17 She can now reach this button here,
25:20 and that's obviously not good when you come to a stop.
25:22 So the workaround is on the screen,
25:24 you can actually set your child locks
25:26 to be both doors or one door.
25:28 And I think that is just a great feature
25:30 'cause you have it permanently set on her side,
25:32 and that means she won't be able
25:34 to do anything with that button
25:36 if she does actually end up reaching it.
25:38 Finally, our window test.
25:40 It's auto up and down.
25:41 Will it go all the way?
25:42 No, not quite.
25:44 Now let's talk cargo capacity.
25:48 It's probably my favorite thing about the Model Y.
25:50 We upgraded to a Model Y from a Model 3
25:52 because we needed more room for our little girl.
25:55 And trust me, it doesn't disappoint.
25:57 So you've got around 850 liters of cargo space
26:00 available here just in the standard form.
26:02 The reason this is so much better than the Model 3
26:05 is the Model 3's boot kind of opens like that,
26:07 and you can't really get a great deal in.
26:09 Well, you can for a sort of sedan,
26:11 but this is just such a big space,
26:13 and you can really just chuck a whole heap of stuff in there.
26:16 So it doesn't come with a cargo blind,
26:17 but I think you can get one aftermarket.
26:19 Beneath the cargo floor here, look at that,
26:21 that is a huge space.
26:22 This is where you can stick things like charging cables,
26:25 and if you do go for a road trip,
26:27 you literally just load that thing up as much as you can,
26:29 and you're all set.
26:31 Over on either side,
26:32 you have even more storage down the edges there.
26:34 There's also this little storage nook up the front
26:36 if you do need just that little bit of extra space as well.
26:39 Show you what it looks like with the bags in there.
26:42 So that's the laptop bag.
26:43 That's the suitcase.
26:46 I mean, you can picture a pram
26:47 and all that sort of stuff in there.
26:48 It all fits in really nicely.
26:50 Then if you do want more space,
26:52 you can drop the second row here from the back.
26:55 It's a 40/20/40 split fold,
26:57 but then if you flick these levers,
26:59 it will just get that completely out of the way,
27:03 and that expands the space to over 2,000 litres.
27:06 In addition to all of this,
27:07 you also have storage up the front,
27:09 a little over 100 litres of space.
27:11 Love the front area,
27:12 because if you do go and pick up like a takeaway curry
27:15 or something that's gonna stink out the car,
27:18 stick it all in the front boot, drive home,
27:21 and no one will ever know.
27:22 There's no evidence. (laughs)
27:24 Now, before we go for a drive,
27:25 let's talk about charging and battery.
27:27 So this is a little flap
27:29 where your charging infrastructure is.
27:31 Keep in mind as well with this
27:32 that if you do have a Tesla branded charger,
27:34 you can just press the button on the charger
27:36 and it opens this flap,
27:37 or you just tap it like that,
27:38 or open it in the car or in the app.
27:40 So this offers both AC and DC charging.
27:44 It'll do AC charging up to 11 kilowatts, three phase,
27:47 and it'll do DC charging.
27:50 Now, this is the funny thing.
27:51 It does it up to 250 kilowatts,
27:53 but it averages around 120 kilowatts.
27:56 And I was a bit surprised by that.
27:57 I thought it'd be much higher than that.
27:59 When I actually tested this the other night,
28:00 I pre-headed the battery,
28:03 ran the state of charge down to under 10%,
28:05 plugged up to a 350 kilowatt charger,
28:07 and the maximum it'd pull is around 190 kilowatts.
28:10 Same charger, except with a Hyundai product
28:13 with their 800 volt architecture,
28:14 it actually averaged over 200 kilowatts.
28:16 So I think that Tesla probably has a bit of work to do
28:18 on the charging front and to get the charging speeds
28:21 up to where some of the competitors are.
28:22 And I think a lot of that
28:23 just comes down to the fact
28:24 that this still doesn't use 800 volt charging architecture.
28:27 Keep in mind as well that battery size here,
28:29 nominal size of just under 80 kilowatt.
28:30 This is a lithium ion battery.
28:32 It's not an LFP battery like you do have
28:34 in the entry model car that I own.
28:36 That means that with this,
28:37 you're only really meant to charge this
28:39 up to about 80 or 90% regularly.
28:41 Whereas with the LFP battery,
28:42 it's recommended to charge that to 100% constantly.
28:45 And I'll run you through why that makes
28:46 a psychological difference when we do hop in the car.
28:52 Okay, so we've just hit the road
28:54 in the Model Y Performance.
28:56 Before I even go into anything else,
28:59 I wanna talk about the ride.
29:01 And this is the thing that I was most bitterly disappointed
29:04 with when we first drove the Model Y
29:06 and when I picked up our personal car as well,
29:09 because the ride is terrible.
29:11 It is so firm, even on my car
29:13 with the base 19 inch alloy wheels,
29:15 it's overly firm and just totally unacceptable
29:18 for a new car today.
29:19 Especially one that isn't meant
29:21 to really be a sports car.
29:22 The base model is just meant
29:24 to be a comfortable family SUV.
29:26 So the suspension's terrible,
29:28 but Tesla has started fitting what they call
29:31 a comfort damper to these cars.
29:33 And I thought, I don't know how convinced I am about that.
29:36 And then when I hopped in this,
29:38 it is like chalk and cheese compared to my car.
29:40 So this uses the comfort damper.
29:42 So despite this being on 21 inch alloy wheels
29:45 with low profile tires,
29:47 this has a far more comfortable ride
29:49 than even our car on the 19.
29:52 So it isn't amazing.
29:54 So it is still really firm
29:55 and it doesn't have the variability
29:57 that other cars in this segment do
29:59 with adaptive damping like the EV6 GT
30:01 and the upcoming Ioniq 5N.
30:03 And I think ultimately they do need that
30:05 because that is where you're gonna notice
30:06 most of the difference when it comes
30:08 to driving around in this.
30:09 But in comparison to what they had previously,
30:12 this is a huge step forward.
30:14 It's my understanding that they're gonna be fitting
30:15 this same type of suspension
30:17 to the rest of the Model Y range for Australia as well,
30:19 but I haven't had that confirmed just yet
30:21 because no one at Tesla ever tells us anything.
30:24 So I mentioned earlier in terms of battery sizes,
30:27 around that 80 kilowatt hour mark
30:29 in terms of the nominal value.
30:31 This then uses two electric motors,
30:32 one on the front axle, one on the rear axle,
30:34 and that produces a combined power output
30:36 of just under 400 kilowatts of power
30:39 and almost 700 newton meters of torque,
30:41 which is a big old wallet.
30:42 And that means when you do get on it,
30:44 it pins you back into the seat
30:48 very much more than you do in the base Model Y.
30:50 That's probably one thing that I miss
30:52 with our Model 3 performance,
30:53 the base Model Y is so slow in comparison.
30:56 This is definitely much better there
30:58 in terms of how quickly it picks up pace and gets moving.
31:00 Now you may have noticed as well,
31:02 this seatbelt is on for the passenger seat,
31:04 and that is because a bit of a design flaw.
31:06 When it is in its normal position,
31:08 there's a piece of plastic on the side of the seat there
31:10 that houses the airbag,
31:12 and the seatbelt just constantly taps on it.
31:14 So all you hear all the time
31:16 is just tap, tap, tap from the seatbelt.
31:18 So when there is no passenger in the car,
31:20 I have to drive with this connected.
31:21 So it's a little bit annoying,
31:23 and it doesn't seem like there's a way to adjust it,
31:24 so that doesn't happen anymore.
31:26 So we've talked about the ride being better.
31:28 What is it like over the sine waves?
31:30 Because when we tested the base Model Y,
31:32 it was excellent over the sine waves.
31:33 It had really good body control.
31:35 Let's see if we're getting the same experience here.
31:38 So we will dial up 130 Ks an hour,
31:41 and we'll see how it goes.
31:44 Wow, it's really feeling really wallowy through there.
31:46 Okay, so 130, here come the sine waves.
31:50 Yeah, look, it's not bad.
31:55 It definitely feels not as good as the base Model Y.
31:59 So obviously with the base Model Y having a firmer ride,
32:02 it is able to control itself better there
32:04 over the sine waves,
32:05 whereas this has a bit more float to it.
32:07 It's not the end of the world,
32:07 but I have a feeling when we do go for a faster drive,
32:10 it's probably going to affect the way that it handles.
32:13 (car engine roaring)
32:15 Now, our bumpy road.
32:16 This is literally the worst road in Australia.
32:19 We hit this at 90 Ks an hour
32:20 to see how the vehicle performs.
32:24 Okie dokie, so there's 90 Ks.
32:27 Now I can really hear something
32:28 rattling around in the back there.
32:30 It's actually quite impressive in terms of the ride.
32:35 It is just so much better than my Model Y.
32:37 Here's our condensed sine wave.
32:39 That is remarkably good.
32:41 It's really just falling into all of those divots nicely.
32:45 And it's just coping really well
32:46 with this sort of terrible road condition.
32:49 So yeah, really impressive sort of ride comfort
32:53 and body control over these choppier stretches of road.
32:56 Now let's talk about economy.
32:59 So Tesla claims a combined consumption
33:02 just under 15 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometres.
33:05 We are currently sitting on 19.2 kilowatt hours per 100 Ks.
33:11 So keep in mind that includes a mix of highway driving
33:14 to get here to the proving ground,
33:15 plus some hot laps earlier in the day.
33:17 So that's really quite impressive.
33:19 And we did something like this in the EV6 GT.
33:21 We were sitting in a much higher energy consumption there.
33:25 What amazes me, my personal Model Y,
33:27 the base rear wheel drive one,
33:28 is sitting at something like 12 kilowatt hours per 100 Ks.
33:32 It is an incredibly efficient setup.
33:34 So yeah, the more you drive it,
33:35 the more you become comfortable with it,
33:37 the less energy it ends up using.
33:38 So it's a pretty sort of efficient vehicle to drive.
33:41 Now there are no drive modes.
33:45 All you can really sort of select here
33:46 is acceleration and the steering modes.
33:49 I'll run you through track mode a little later on,
33:51 but let's go for a little fang around our track here.
33:54 We do this in all our cars.
33:55 We'll see how this all feels.
33:57 Feel for the brakes as well.
33:59 First corner.
34:01 All right.
34:07 So that stability control light flashing already,
34:09 which is not a good sign.
34:10 It sits nice and flat through the corners.
34:15 The steering is incredibly direct.
34:17 So a tiny bit of steering input is all you need
34:19 to get this thing to move around.
34:21 Not loving the way this is set up.
34:26 That high center of gravity is really affecting
34:29 the way this performs when you hit bumps mid corner.
34:31 Yeah, 'cause the steering is so direct,
34:35 it really sort of wallows as it comes through
34:38 some of these corners.
34:39 And wow, even there over those tram tracks,
34:42 it's really not very good in terms of braking performance.
34:45 You're getting it moving between regen
34:50 and then the mechanical braking system,
34:52 and that's causing it to unsettle itself.
34:54 See what it's like onto our back stroke.
34:56 I can see that stability control light flashing there again.
34:59 I'll go hard on the throttle here.
35:01 Now it'll be interesting to see what happens at the end here.
35:04 I've got to bump into that braking zone.
35:07 Hard on the brakes.
35:08 Wow.
35:09 It's not very good at all.
35:11 Yeah, this just feels, yeah, it just doesn't feel right.
35:17 The Model 3 performance is great
35:19 'cause it's got that low center of gravity.
35:21 It's quick, it's not overly heavy.
35:23 It does everything great.
35:24 This on the other hand, this isn't all that heavy
35:26 compared to something like an EV6 GT.
35:29 It's something like 300 kilos less.
35:30 This tips and scales at just over two tons.
35:33 But it's the center of gravity that makes this thing
35:36 just not very impressive when the speed picks up.
35:38 So you're finding there with that direct steering,
35:41 it turns in really sharp, but because you've got that,
35:43 that ride that is a mix between firm and floaty,
35:47 if you do hit a bump mid-corner,
35:48 it really unsettles the car a lot.
35:50 And I'm finding the same thing here with this brake pedal
35:53 that I found in my car as well
35:54 when we went for a fang around here.
35:56 Because it's not a brake-by-wire system
35:59 like you're finding in the EV6 GT,
36:01 when you hit spots like that
36:03 where you have a bump into a braking zone,
36:05 it all of a sudden goes from having maximum regen
36:08 to coming out of regen
36:09 because the tires slightly leave the road there.
36:12 You then need to apply more braking input,
36:15 which puts more pressure on your braking system.
36:18 Then when it comes back into contact with the road,
36:20 it goes back into regen.
36:21 So you're just getting this really unsettling effect
36:24 as it moves through.
36:25 And as you can see on those faster corners as well,
36:27 stability control was constantly biting there.
36:30 And it really shouldn't do that.
36:32 And the way that they can fix that is, again,
36:34 by doing what Hyundai and Kia do,
36:36 which is fitting an ELSD to the rear axle.
36:38 Because what it's currently doing
36:39 is when you tip it into a corner like this
36:41 and get on the throttle,
36:42 it's trying to spin up that inside wheel,
36:44 and it's using a braking system to apply a torque vector.
36:47 And that really doesn't work well.
36:49 So in a high-performance car like this,
36:51 they need a proper electronically-controlled
36:53 limited-slip differential to stop it doing that.
36:55 So obviously, you're not going to be driving like this
36:58 all the time, I totally understand that.
36:59 But if you do pick up the pace,
37:01 you want to go to the track or something,
37:03 this really does feel like it needs a lot of work.
37:05 And you can see why brands like Hyundai and Kia
37:09 spend so much time at the Nürburgring,
37:11 because that gives you such a great mix
37:13 of driving conditions they can tune those vehicles on.
37:16 Like we drove with the EV6 GT here recently,
37:20 it is significantly more comfortable on a track like this
37:23 where the speeds pick up
37:24 and there are sort of bumps mid-corner than this is.
37:27 So yeah, quick and a straight line.
37:29 It is definitely, but it just doesn't feel as settled
37:32 as it needs to be when the pace picks up through the corners.
37:35 Now, what about road noise?
37:38 It is really quiet in here.
37:39 I was quite surprised by that.
37:40 It's a really nice place to be seated.
37:42 Even on these sportier tyres,
37:44 don't have a huge amount of road noise
37:45 coming into the cabin.
37:46 It does feel a little boomier than the base model car,
37:49 but for the most part,
37:50 it's still a really nice and pleasant experience,
37:52 even on course-chip country roads.
37:53 Just something else that I wanted to sort of touch on
37:55 as well, even though this has a significantly bigger battery
37:58 than the entry-level car, it's like 20 kilowatt hours bigger,
38:01 your actual driving range isn't all that impressive.
38:04 So they claim over 500 kilometres on the WLTP cycle,
38:08 but when I had this charged to 100% this morning,
38:11 it was only showing marginally more mileage
38:14 than what I would get in my personal car.
38:16 So my personal car has the LFP battery,
38:17 this has the lithium ion.
38:19 This was showing a little under 500 Ks,
38:21 whereas my car will show 430 when it's full.
38:23 And the whole concept here as well
38:25 is that you really only should be charging this
38:27 to 80 or 90% because the lithium ion batteries
38:31 don't like being full constantly
38:32 unless you're doing a road trip,
38:33 whereas with the LFP batteries,
38:35 you should be always charging to 100%.
38:37 So at 100%, I'm showing 430,
38:40 here at 100%, I'm showing not much more than that.
38:43 And then I'd probably be charging this to 80 or 90%,
38:45 which means you're not actually theoretically
38:48 getting more driving range.
38:49 It is a bit of a mental thing,
38:51 but yeah, the added weight you have here
38:54 really does affect how much driving range
38:55 you have available.
38:56 There is a long range version of the Model Y
38:58 that's just gone on sale that offers significantly more,
39:01 but then you don't get that performance benefit
39:03 that you do here.
39:04 Okay, so I mentioned earlier that this cruise control system
39:10 doesn't really work that well,
39:11 and I'll show you what I mean.
39:12 I'm gonna get up behind Igor, who's in front of me.
39:15 He's got his cruise set to 70.
39:18 So you can see we're approaching him,
39:19 we're predictably slowing down.
39:21 We've got our cruise set to 80, he's doing 70.
39:24 I need to pass him now.
39:26 What would happen normally in a car
39:27 with radar cruise control,
39:29 the second I hit the indicator,
39:30 it would start speeding up because there's no one there,
39:32 but watch this.
39:33 Put the indicator on, we're still doing the same speed.
39:36 So at this point now, I'm holding up traffic,
39:38 and only now is it starting to speed up.
39:40 We still haven't passed him.
39:42 And this is all because of the vision system.
39:44 It's just not letting us achieve what we need to achieve
39:48 because it just doesn't have a radar
39:50 to tell it that there's nothing there.
39:51 So I don't know if that's a confidence thing
39:53 in their programming,
39:54 but it's something that definitely needs to be resolved.
39:56 Okey-dokey, time to do a little bit of testing
39:58 with the lane support systems.
40:01 We'll see how well this works.
40:02 Tesla has the best in the business
40:04 in the sense that all of their systems
40:06 typically work really well.
40:07 And what we've got here is a simulation
40:09 of a worst case scenario where the car has to apply
40:11 a lot of torque to the steering wheel.
40:13 Had a couple of cars pass here,
40:14 but a lot of them will fail in the outer lane there
40:16 where the car has to do all the work.
40:17 So cruise control to 70 kilometers an hour.
40:21 So here in lane one, it's doing an excellent job.
40:23 We're staying sort of dead center there.
40:26 It's applying plenty of steering input.
40:28 There's no problems there.
40:28 You can see those lines appearing.
40:30 We'll jump over to next lane over.
40:32 Okay, and then set cruise control.
40:37 So autopilot is active now.
40:39 It's steering for us.
40:41 And again, doing an excellent job there,
40:43 keeping the car pretty much dead center to that lane.
40:45 Let's see how it goes in the outermost lane.
40:51 Okay, so set that.
40:53 Set it to 70 k's an hour.
40:59 There we go.
41:01 Excellent, it is holding that perfectly.
41:02 So pass in lane one, two, and three.
41:06 Okay, time to do a little bit of performance testing.
41:11 So Tesla claims a zero to 100 time of 3.7 seconds.
41:15 Keep in mind though, that number's a bit,
41:16 a little bit dodgy because they include a one foot rollout,
41:20 which means you're deducting the first foot of travel.
41:23 And that is a drag racing thing.
41:25 Obviously on the road,
41:26 it doesn't make any sense to quote that number.
41:29 So I suspect the number we're gonna get to,
41:31 a hundred kilometers an hour,
41:32 is going to be slower than that,
41:33 but we'll see how we go anyway.
41:35 We're gonna go all the way through to 120 as well,
41:36 so we can see what that overtaking time is like.
41:39 So yeah, everything's ready to go.
41:40 I'm just gonna slam down the throttle.
41:42 Here we go.
41:43 Yeah, that is nice and quick.
41:49 So there's a hundred, 120 as well.
41:52 Very good.
41:53 I'll come to a stop.
41:55 Keep in mind as well that with Ohm's law,
41:57 if you do actually have a fuller battery,
42:01 it will be quicker because P equals VI,
42:04 power equals volts times current.
42:06 So with a fuller battery, you have a higher voltage,
42:09 and that's gonna mean a better acceleration time.
42:12 So zero to 100, that's not bad, 4.17 seconds,
42:16 but still well off the claim of 3.7 seconds.
42:20 And then 80 to 120 came in at 2.61 seconds,
42:24 which is a really good time.
42:25 It just shows you for overtaking,
42:26 this is going to feel really nice and sharp
42:28 for those overtakes.
42:30 Time to do a break.
42:31 Let's see how quickly this will stop from a hundred Ks an hour.
42:34 Okay, so dial up a hundred Ks an hour
42:36 and hit our braking marker, slam down the anchors.
42:40 Here we go.
42:44 (groans)
42:46 That felt really good.
42:50 Curious to see what kind of a braking distance we had there
42:53 and it felt really strong.
42:54 2.57 seconds, 36.1 metres.
42:58 That is impressive, wow.
43:01 I was not expecting that.
43:02 So just to put that into context,
43:03 today we're also testing the Cupra 4Mental,
43:06 which is a small SUV.
43:08 This weighs significantly more than that
43:10 and has stopped in almost the exact same distance.
43:14 So yeah, very impressed with that
43:15 in terms of stopping distance.
43:16 If you do want to see how this compares to other cars
43:18 that we've tested in terms of those performance
43:20 and braking figures, including the EV6 GT,
43:23 have a look at the link in the description below.
43:26 And now time for our reverse acceleration test.
43:29 Let's see how it goes.
43:30 It's all nice and gentle.
43:33 Wow, that's very gentle.
43:36 24 kilometres an hour.
43:38 Okay, so let's chat track mode.
43:41 So I'm going to put this into park
43:42 and just show you what it looks like.
43:44 So if you go over here to,
43:46 where are we, pedals and steering, track mode.
43:49 If we go to customise,
43:50 I'll just show you what it looks like.
43:51 So Tesla has a couple of presets in there,
43:54 but I've set up my own.
43:55 I wrote test and accidentally put a Y there,
43:57 so let's just do yes.
43:59 So what you can do is actually set
44:01 where you want all the torque to go.
44:02 So you can go full front wheel drive,
44:05 full rear wheel drive,
44:06 and then you can set how much
44:07 stability control intervention you want,
44:10 along with how much regen braking you want.
44:12 So keep in mind that if you do want to preserve your brakes,
44:14 you want regen braking to be at its maximum.
44:17 And then if you want to do drifty things,
44:19 you want it to be at its minimum,
44:20 so it doesn't keep cutting in
44:21 while you're trying to do stuff.
44:23 Post-drive cooling will run the fans after you're done,
44:25 and then it also saves dash cams for laps as well.
44:29 Also gives you this really cool display over here.
44:31 So show you what it looks like.
44:32 Let's go to all front wheel drive
44:34 and just see what that feels like.
44:36 We'll switch track mode on.
44:37 You have a disclaimer.
44:38 We enable that.
44:39 Shows you that everything here is ready to go.
44:41 I can hear the fans kick on there as well.
44:44 So right now we're in front wheel drive mode.
44:47 It actually still accelerates pretty good
44:49 for front wheel drive mode.
44:50 So we'll go around our cone here.
44:53 And just gas it.
44:54 Kind of very uneventful.
44:58 It spins up that front wheel,
45:02 but it doesn't really do a great deal.
45:06 So it's not all that exciting.
45:07 So let's do what is exciting,
45:09 and that is rear wheel drive.
45:12 So we'll just go all the way to rear wheel drive.
45:14 Stability control is switched off.
45:16 I'm gonna leave red gen braking at 5%.
45:19 Come back now and give this another shot.
45:21 And keep seeing how this feels compared to the EV6 GT,
45:25 which has a drift mode.
45:26 So dip it into here.
45:28 It's actually really impressive.
45:33 It is just so much more gradual
45:36 and controllable than the EV6 GT.
45:41 So this isn't actually a drift mode.
45:44 It's not trying to drift.
45:46 All it's doing is just sending all the torque to the rear.
45:48 But to me, this feels a lot more controllable
45:50 and manageable than it did in the EV6.
45:53 We'll give that another crack.
45:54 So you can't...
45:57 (laughs)
45:59 That was a bit sloppy,
46:00 but you can actually get a fair bit
46:02 of steering angle in there.
46:03 And it really is very nice and controllable.
46:05 So yeah, really happy with that.
46:07 So track mode, you can use it if you wanna go to the track.
46:11 And I think that if you do go to the track,
46:13 make sure you have all of this enabled.
46:14 And I would leave stability control active
46:16 'cause it'll still let you have a bit of fun,
46:18 but then step in when it does need to.
46:20 And probably the best split there as well
46:22 is gonna be something like 60/40 or 80/20.
46:25 That'll give you the most fun without destroying your car.
46:34 Okay, so Tesla Model Y performance.
46:36 Look, just like my Model Y, I like the formula.
46:40 It's got plenty of space.
46:41 The tech is fantastic, especially that mobile app.
46:43 It is just sensational.
46:46 The charging network's great.
46:47 It does all of that stuff really well.
46:49 What I was hoping this would be is basically
46:51 an SUV version of the Model 3 performance.
46:53 And the Model 3 performance around here
46:54 was an absolute rocket ship.
46:56 It was really nice and in control all of the time.
46:59 This just feels, it just feels all sorts of weird.
47:02 And I keep referring to Hyundai and Kia.
47:04 They are sort of in the price bracket of this
47:06 in terms of performance.
47:08 And they are both significantly better than this
47:09 when it comes to handling at speed.
47:12 Now, if you then wanna spend even more money,
47:14 you look at the other brands that are doing engineering
47:16 at the Nurburgring, like BMW with the iX.
47:18 That is, again, significantly better than this around here.
47:21 Obviously much more expensive,
47:22 but the formula for an EV can be better than what this is.
47:26 And I think that Tesla needs to really invest
47:28 in ride and handling.
47:29 And they need to do that pretty urgently
47:31 because the rest of the competitors are coming
47:33 and they're all offering far better packages
47:35 that are just a bit more interesting
47:36 to drive at speed than this.
47:37 So if it was me and me spending the money,
47:40 I probably wouldn't bother getting the performance.
47:42 I would go for the long range.
47:43 That gives you not only more range,
47:45 it gives you better performance in the entry level.
47:47 Yes, it doesn't have track mode and that sort of stuff,
47:49 but I could probably take or leave that.
47:51 So yeah, my advice, don't get the performance,
47:53 get the long range or even just the base model.
47:55 I think it is really good value for money.
