00:00 G'day, I'm Paul, so this is the BMW M3 Touring.
00:03 It was recently revealed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
00:06 Today I'm gonna take you on a bit of a walk around
00:08 and give you my reaction to it,
00:09 'cause we just drove the M4 competition
00:12 and I was seriously blown away by that.
00:14 So to think that you can now get basically that,
00:17 but in a station wagon for all you family people out there,
00:20 I think is pretty exciting.
00:21 So let's settle up and take it for a static walk around.
00:25 Now, if you haven't done so already,

00:35 but let's get started with this.
00:36 Now let's quickly talk about pricing.
00:39 I don't know what the pricing is gonna be,
00:41 but it will be more expensive than the sedan version of this
00:44 and given the amount of engineering that's gone into it,
00:46 it could be a bit of a big step there,
00:48 but we'll wait and see when they finally do announce pricing.
00:51 And in terms of when it's going to arrive,
00:53 well, this enters production in November,
00:55 and that means that hopefully it'll be in Australia
00:58 late this year, early next year.
00:59 We'll see how we go.
01:00 Now on the design front, down the front here,
01:02 it looks pretty much the same as the M3 sedan.
01:05 So you've got that big kidney grill there.
01:06 This one has the optional carbon package.
01:08 So air runs through there to the brakes
01:10 and additional cooling for the engine.
01:12 Look, the designer, I know it's been a bit controversial,
01:14 but it really does look good in person,
01:17 and especially here in this colour.
01:18 So this is like a matte black,
01:20 and it just makes the car look so incredibly sinister.
01:23 And I'll tell you why this colour works well for the roof
01:25 when we check that out.
01:26 But yeah, this really sort of translates nicely to the rear
01:29 as it comes along the back there.
01:31 So come around to the wheels,
01:32 I'll show you what these look like.
01:34 So this has like a piano black finish on the wheels.
01:36 The badge on the front and also here on the caps
01:39 is to commemorate the BMW M anniversary.
01:42 And you can basically just get a standard badge
01:45 if you don't want this, but I think this looks pretty cool.
01:47 A 380 mil rotor there, it's cross drilled.
01:50 You've got black brake calipers, six piston caliper.
01:53 This can be different colours as well,
01:54 so you don't have to go black if you don't want to,
01:56 but I think the black works really well here,
01:58 especially if you're getting the black paint work on the car.
02:01 M3 competition, because this will be only sold
02:04 as an M3 competition in touring spec.
02:06 I love these side skirts here, have a look at this.
02:08 They run all the way down the side of the car there.
02:10 It's like a high gloss piano black finish,
02:12 and it really just gives that an aggressive taper
02:14 as the door comes down there.
02:16 Carbon package here on the mirror.
02:18 Again, this car's got that optionally fitted,
02:20 but I do love the way here with the M cars,
02:22 how it sits separate to the body up that top section there.
02:25 It's probably for a very minor aero gain,
02:27 but I think it looks really cool.
02:29 So I mentioned the interaction of the paint here
02:31 with the roof.
02:32 So this doesn't get a carbon roof like you do
02:34 in the other versions of this car that aren't the touring,
02:37 but the way they've staggered this is great
02:38 because this comes standard with a high gloss black finish,
02:41 and depending on which colour you go,
02:43 it may not look all that good,
02:44 but when you do go the frozen,
02:45 it'll match up the top there too.
02:47 So it really just cuts a beautiful sleek line.
02:50 And of course, being the touring, have a look at this.
02:52 As you get to the back,
02:53 you've got these flared arches here
02:55 with a little bit of that extra protection on the side there.
02:58 The brakes at the rear measure 370 mil.
03:00 They're also cross drilled.
03:02 That is a single piston caliper.
03:03 They're also on a 20 inch wheel at the back there.
03:06 In terms of the tyre size,
03:07 actually, let's have a sticky bit down here.
03:09 So 285 wide at the rear.
03:11 Given this is all wheel drive,
03:12 traction should be pretty good,
03:14 but again, you can just flick it into rear wheel drive mode
03:16 to have some proper fun with it.
03:17 Come around to the back,
03:18 I think this is the bit everyone
03:19 is probably the most excited about.
03:21 So to me, this is the thing that makes it so appealing.
03:23 I love a good wagon,
03:24 but then when you make it a performance wagon,
03:27 this really sort of takes it to the next level.
03:29 And it takes all the good things
03:30 about the 3 Series Touring
03:32 and just obviously adds all those performance elements.
03:34 So let's start at the top.
03:36 You've got a,
03:37 I guess it kind of looks like a shark fin aerial.
03:39 We've got an aerial up there that resembles that.
03:41 This gurney here from 120 Ks an hour,
03:44 you can feel the effects of that.
03:46 So that is to add extra downforce to the rear.
03:48 So when you think about these as a performance car,
03:52 you really need to have as much downforce
03:54 on the rear as you can,
03:55 especially because even as an all wheel drive,
03:57 it is rear bias.
03:58 So you really want to have it hunkering down
04:00 as much as humanly possible.
04:02 Tail lights here, LED, frosted finish,
04:04 they look sensational.
04:06 And then as you go further down the bottom,
04:07 this car has that carbon diffuser on it
04:09 with these four enormous cannons.
04:12 The other vehicles in this M range
04:14 are actually available with an M performance exhaust
04:17 that kind of groups all four exhausts in the center here.
04:19 And that looks just over the top,
04:21 but pretty cool in my opinion.
04:23 I don't know if that'll be offered here,
04:24 but if it does, that's going to stand out really nicely.
04:27 The other cool features on the back here
04:28 are the ability to open the glass again,
04:30 just like a normal three series Touring.
04:32 And then if you're done with that,
04:33 you can go straight into opening the boot.
04:36 Look at that.
04:37 So I actually learned a couple of interesting things today.
04:39 So whenever we, I guess, review these cars,
04:42 I've always wondered what the little hole
04:44 next to the grab handle up the top there does.
04:46 It's actually to hold that cargo blind up.
04:49 So you have kind of like a barrier there.
04:51 And the other thing I learned as well
04:52 is these rubber grips here are actually motorized.
04:55 So if you look under here,
04:57 these motors push those rubber grips up
04:59 when the car's running
05:00 and that stops everything sliding forward.
05:02 And if you take this to a track day
05:04 and you forget to take your luggage or shopping out,
05:06 should hopefully hold it in position.
05:08 But you can see here that there really isn't
05:10 a great deal of compromise in terms of storage,
05:13 especially when you consider that
05:15 they've had to strengthen that rear suspension
05:17 to give it that lateral rigidity.
05:19 And you don't have any intrusion here
05:21 like you typically would with a cross member.
05:23 That means you get this underfloor storage as well
05:25 for the cargo blind.
05:26 Really is a decent amount of space there
05:29 that you can use just as a normal family wagon as well.
05:32 So welcome to the interior of the M3 Touring.
05:35 One of the things you'll notice that's different
05:37 to the M3 and the M4 is the screen here.
05:40 So this gets the curved display that we've seen
05:42 in some of BMW's newer products.
05:44 This is where the M3 sedan is going to go as well shortly.
05:48 So this isn't anything sort of new,
05:50 but this will be the first that actually gets this set up.
05:53 And I think that this just looks sensational.
05:56 We've seen this set up in the iX before,
05:58 works really well.
05:59 It's got OS8.
06:00 It is the latest version of iDrive
06:01 and the best version as well.
06:03 OS7 kind of dropped the ball a little bit there
06:05 in terms of functionality, but this is sensational.
06:07 And it just looks really nice.
06:09 The carbon inlays here are all just sort of
06:11 typical performance BMW and the rest of this
06:14 looks very familiar.
06:15 You've got your customizable drive modes up the top here.
06:17 So you can even set one of these to be rear wheel drive.
06:20 So if you do wanna go do some skids or something,
06:22 you just double tap one of those and away you go.
06:24 And I love the fact that these are carbon as well.
06:27 They just have a really cool feel to them.
06:28 So pretty impressive stuff.
06:30 Now under the bonnet, this is going to share an engine
06:31 with the M3 competition.
06:33 So that means three litre turbocharged six cylinder,
06:35 375 kilowatts of power, 650 Newton metres of torque,
06:41 and you've also got an eight speed
06:43 torque converter automatic.
06:44 So that's important to note as well,
06:46 because the dual clutch setup of the previous generation
06:49 M cars, it was great, but this really just takes it
06:52 to another level in terms of drivability.
06:54 You don't get any of that stuttering
06:55 and BMW has been able to engineer
06:57 a really good launch control program as well,
06:59 which is typically the downfall
07:00 of a standard torque converter.
07:02 Zero to 100 happens at around four seconds
07:05 and it will do almost 300 kilometres an hour
07:07 with the driver's package.
07:09 I mean, just think about that 300 kilometres an hour
07:12 in a family wagon, it is seriously cool stuff.
07:14 So that has been your first glance on Car Expert
07:18 of the M3 Touring.
07:19 I genuinely cannot wait to drive this
07:21 because it looks sensational
07:23 and I think if it's finished in the right colour,
07:26 this is just like the stealthiest performance wagon
07:29 on the market and the perfect reason to move away
07:31 from an SUV.
