00:00 The neighbouring countries have begun to feel the heat in a variety of unpredictable ways
00:08 as the civil unrest in Myanmar intensifies between the rebels and the military junta.
00:13 Over 200 ethnic Rohingya Muslims have arrived in Indonesia's Aceh province on Tuesday evening,
00:18 totalling over 1,000 arrivals of the Myanmar Muslim minority for the week, as confirmed
00:23 by a leader in the province's fishing community.
00:26 This migration trend often occurs from November to April when the seas are calmer, prompting
00:30 many persecuted Rohingyas to depart Myanmar on fragile vessels to countries like Thailand,
00:35 Bangladesh, Malaysia and Indonesia.
00:37 However, these numbers are just way too alarming.
00:40 Miftah Kadaki, the chief of Aceh's fishing community, informed media that the recent
00:44 arrivals, consisting mainly of women and children, appeared weak and malnourished.
00:49 They landed near Sabang off Sumatra's northern tip on Tuesday evening.
00:52 Mitra Salima Suriono, a spokesperson for the UN Refugee Agency in Indonesia, stated that
00:57 there seemed to be no specific reason for the notable surge in Rohingya arrivals.
01:02 Their migration is driven by the pursuit of a safer life, she explained.
01:06 The people of Aceh, however, made an effort to halt the flood of these migrants.
01:10 Although hundreds of Rohingyas eventually made their way ashore on Sunday, the villagers
01:14 had attempted to stop them from arriving in the Birun area of north-eastern Sumatra last
01:19 week.
01:20 Rohingya have been fleeing the predominantly Buddhist country of Myanmar for many years
01:24 as they face mistreatment, denial of citizenship and general perception as foreign intruders
01:28 from South Asia.
01:30 In the Bangladeshi border of Cox's Bazar, approximately a million Rohingyas are housed
01:34 in refugee camps.
01:36 The majority of them fled the military-led crackdown in Myanmar back in 2017.
01:40 The people of Aceh have previously welcomed refugees who are taken into temporary camps
01:44 before they are usually moved to other parts of Indonesia.
01:47 But tensions have been escalating in recent years as more and more Rohingyas have arrived.
01:51 PM Joko Widodo has granted temporary residency to these newly arrived refugees.
01:56 But the trouble here is that it is rare to see so many arrivals in such a short space
01:59 of time at the start of what is known as the sailing season.
02:03 And the refugee experts predict more boats could arrive in coming months, given the difficult
02:07 conditions in Bangladesh and the worsening crisis in Myanmar.
