Chesterfield car parking price increase - vox pop
Transcript
00:00 What do you think about the car parking prices going up from 170 to 190?
00:06 I thought it was bad to start with.
00:08 So, you know, this is even worse.
00:10 You've got that many places now out of town that you can park for nothing
00:14 and virtually get everything that you need.
00:16 It's just another nail in the coffin lid for the town traders, really.
00:20 And the council will also be reviewing the resident permit,
00:24 if they should still be in place or if they should no longer be used?
00:28 Well, unfortunately, I've moved just outside of getting a permit now,
00:31 so I don't get one anyway.
00:33 But, yeah, I mean, that's something else.
00:35 A lot of people that I knew did rely on that permit
00:38 and then they would actually use it at that time.
00:42 So, yeah, it is ridiculous, really.
00:45 You know, I think money could be saved somewhere else.
00:47 Car parking prices went up from 170 to 190 per hour now
00:52 and also the minimum time you can park went up from half an hour to an hour.
00:56 So how do you feel about it?
00:58 Well, I think that's a bit much, really,
01:01 because, I mean, if you only want to slip in a shop,
01:04 you don't want to be paying for an hour if you only want to be,
01:07 well, maximum half an hour.
01:10 So, no, I don't agree with that.
01:13 And also the council is going to review resident permits.
01:18 I'm not sure if you use them, but if you live in the sort of Chesterfield area,
01:22 you can park for free, for example, on Sundays.
01:25 Are you affected by that or not really?
01:27 It doesn't really apply to me because we don't live in town.
01:32 So, I'm not really going to have an opinion on that.
01:36 Well, I think it's not fair for most people, for most drivers.
01:39 Drivers tend to be hit for most things these days.
01:42 But not everyone comes to town for two hours or an hour even.
01:46 You know, a lot of elderly people here just in and out, really.
01:49 Mind you, they probably use the bus, I think, more than the car parks, but not always.
01:54 Yeah, and what do you think about the minimum time of parking?
01:57 So, it used to be 30 minutes and now you have to pay for a full hour.
02:01 Well, same thing really. I don't think it's necessary to put it up to...
02:04 It's just another way of making money, really, out of motorists.
02:08 It's just going to put more and more people off coming into town centre
02:12 when they can go down to Riverside.
02:16 People are just not going to pay those prices.
02:18 And what we really need is to attract more people into town centre.
02:22 And the way to do that is to make it affordable for car parking.
02:26 And at the minute, it's just not affordable.
02:29 Because like everybody else, everybody else is watching what they spend.
02:33 So, car parking prices are ridiculous.
02:36 I paid £9.80 the other week just to park in multi-storeys, which were crazy, really.
02:42 So, yeah, they really need to get hold of these car parking prices
02:46 and start to attract more people into town centre.
02:49 And support local businesses.
02:52 We've got a lot of independent shops who are really struggling.
02:56 And they need support. So the council really, the one way they can support
03:00 is by making the car parking affordable.
