00:00 Welcome to Sunday Morning Quarterback with Jay Stockwell and Bob Frady.
00:06 Happy Thanksgiving, UB.
00:08 Happy Thanksgiving, Commander Stockwell.
00:11 How are you this fine morning of the day before Black Friday football?
00:18 If you're going to address me as commander, say Commander Stockwell of the American Navy.
00:23 We wouldn't want to be confused with any other nationality.
00:25 Alright, butthead.
00:28 You are now butthead.
00:35 Now I'm butthead?
00:37 Boy, that's a demotion.
00:40 Listen, we with justice is served quickly in the USS Frady.
00:47 I have to issue an apology to the coaching staff of Nebraska from our last podcast.
00:53 Did you get some feedback?
00:54 I called them out of shape and people were not necessarily happy with that.
00:58 They thought it wasn't positive.
00:59 How did you get this?
01:00 Where did you get this on the comments?
01:01 From the alumni telling us we need to be more positive and saying, "Listen, I don't mean
01:08 they're physically out of shape.
01:09 I want a football coach who is physically out of shape."
01:13 Football coaches who are in shape make me really suspicious that they're spending too
01:16 much time pushing around weights and not enough time working on the game.
01:19 You know, you give me the guy from Illinois, that's the size of a football coach.
01:23 Maybe that's a little large, but him, the guy from Kansas State, big round guys.
01:27 That's who I want.
01:28 The guy from Maryland?
01:29 Yeah, exactly.
01:30 Fridgen, you know, Frigerator.
01:33 I want big guys as the coach.
01:35 And Scott Frost was in shape and he's spending too much time on looking good.
01:40 I don't want that.
01:41 That's like 60 minutes a day you could be thinking about a play.
01:45 So my apologies.
01:46 What I meant was they were out of college football rules shape.
01:51 So just to clarify to all of the people who were offended, that's okay.
01:56 Was this a large dynamic?
01:57 Was it in the comments or what?
01:58 No, it was a very, very small dynamic.
02:01 Yes, a couple of people reached out to me on the Twitter.
02:04 So you know, it is what it is.
02:07 We take our feedback seriously here.
02:09 Oh, okay.
02:10 Did they specifically address you or was I involved in the critique?
02:13 Nope, just me.
02:17 No one criticizes you.
02:18 They're afraid of you.
02:19 It's like, it's like criticizing Shrek.
02:23 It's like, I'm more like donkey.
02:25 You're more like Shrek.
02:26 I can criticize the donkey.
02:29 Hold on.
02:31 Let's start out by saying what we're thankful for.
02:34 Okay.
02:35 With regards to Nebraska Cornhuskers.
02:37 Oh, just with regard to the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
02:40 Okay.
02:41 This should be quick.
02:42 Yeah.
02:43 Yeah.
02:44 I am thankful for Matt Rule as our new head coach.
02:49 I think he's going to be great over time.
02:51 We've been a little sharp with our criticism in the last couple of podcasts, but overall,
02:58 I think the program is going in a great direction and I really like how he handles the team.
03:05 The team is motivated.
03:07 By the way, Cy Robinson is coming back.
03:08 Did you see that?
03:10 I seen that.
03:11 I seen that.
03:12 Yeah.
03:13 Yeah.
03:14 You've seen that.
03:15 So Cy's coming back.
03:16 Yeah.
03:17 So that's a really positive signal.
03:19 And I also liked how coach handled the Tony White rumors.
03:23 I mean, that's exactly the right answers.
03:26 I want my, I'm going to attract great coaching talent because they're going to get promoted
03:31 eventually to be a come ahead coach.
03:33 Is anybody trying to pick Satterfield right now?
03:37 Iowa maybe.
03:43 So I think it's cool the way he handled that.
03:45 It's like, of course I want him to be a head coach.
03:47 He's not taking the San Diego State job.
03:49 Don't wait.
03:50 I mean, come on.
03:51 You don't want to take San Diego State.
03:52 San Diego's going to back the truck up and keep it.
03:54 You could do another season at Nebraska and get a P5 head coach.
03:59 You could power conference head coaching job after another good season at Nebraska.
04:03 Because the defense, frankly, it's, you know, the 3-3-5, it's people are picking up on it
04:08 a little bit.
04:09 It's not quite as devastating as it was early in the season.
04:11 And that's okay.
04:12 You know, you're going to sharpen the ax a little bit with good competition.
04:15 And I think another season under the helm would be great.
04:18 However, if USC is the team I'm more nervous about backing up the truck, you know, they
04:23 have almost unlimited resources and could, you know, could potentially give them a big
04:29 giant raise and take over a defense that's terrible.
04:33 So anyway, that's for the off season.
04:36 Let's focus on today.
04:37 What are we thankful for?
04:38 So you're thankful for Matt Ruhle.
04:41 Matt Ruhle, I'm thankful for Trev Alberts.
04:44 I'm really glad they've got him on a good contract now.
04:47 I think, as we said in our very first podcast, I think leadership really matters.
04:52 And I think these guys are leaders.
04:55 And I think they're prepared to hang in there for a while.
04:59 And so I think we got Matt for a decade and he's going to continue to cultivate a wonderful
05:05 staff and, you know, continue to move the program in the right direction.
05:11 I did see one thing this week that was kind of telling.
05:16 Our schedule strength has not been that great.
05:18 The teams that we've played have an average number of wins of 4.8.
05:24 And so that's contributed to whatever level of success we've had.
05:28 But I do still, I mean, they have the defensive performance that we have.
05:34 And now I think we've maybe found our quarterback in Chubba Purdy.
05:38 And by the way, Bob, we are a two point favorite for this game tomorrow.
05:45 Just let me say this about that, Jay Stockwell.
05:47 You know what that is?
05:50 That's hope.
05:51 That's hope.
05:52 There must have been a good harvest.
05:53 No, no, no.
05:54 There's nothing to do with hope.
05:55 There's a good harvest.
05:56 Hold on, let me finish.
05:57 There's a good harvest this year.
06:00 People have a few extra bucks in their pocket, you know, and they're like, all right, I'm
06:04 hoping that Nebraska is going to win.
06:06 So placing money on them to win.
06:09 And Vegas is all about where the money is.
06:11 They set the line and they adjusted based upon the money.
06:13 So there's a whole lot of money coming in for Nebraska, for desperate Nebraskans who
06:17 want to go on vacation in December.
06:20 That's what's tilting the line.
06:21 It's got nothing to do with the skill of the game.
06:23 It's got nothing to do with any of that stuff.
06:25 It's just the desperation of the Nebraska fan is much, much greater than the comeuppance
06:32 of the Iowa fan.
06:34 Iowa fans are like, we're fine.
06:35 We're going to bowl.
06:36 We're saving our money for the bowl game.
06:38 And it's like the Nebraska fans are desperate.
06:41 Did you hear the story that they may, um, they may not, uh, they may rest some players.
06:48 So which I would be completely happy with, you know, rest, rest everyone if you want.
06:52 You know, when we get to the predictions, I'll have a surprising prediction for you,
06:56 but I don't care if they rest players.
06:57 It's like, it's like give everybody else a chance.
07:00 If you think your roster is good.
07:02 Here's what I'm thankful for with Nebraska football.
07:05 I'm thankful for hope.
07:07 You know, it just seems like the, the, the, the plane is ascending rather than augering
07:12 into the ground.
07:13 So it is, uh, it's nice to have some hope.
07:18 And I think one of the things that will happen this year, if we got a little more hopeful
07:22 than we should have, uh, but hope I'm, I'm thankful for that.
07:27 And I'm thankful for our podcast, which isn't really tied to that.
07:30 While it is in the breath.
07:31 Yeah.
07:32 Whatever.
07:33 The wrath.
07:34 It's fun to do it.
07:35 It has been an experience.
07:36 So let's put it that way.
07:38 We're thinking through lots of upgrades for next year.
07:42 We're hopeful for a bowl game because we want to participate in that.
07:46 But let's, so let's talk about predictions here.
07:47 So the over and the historic low.
07:51 I think the over under is like seven.
07:53 So it's 20, it's 25.
07:56 I'll look at it.
07:57 I'll get the latest here.
07:58 25.
07:59 Oh my gosh.
08:00 Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:01 Exactly.
08:02 Soccer games.
08:03 It, it, my youth league have an over under that's higher than 25.
08:11 Oh my God.
08:12 No, is it 25 or 27?
08:14 I think is 25.5.
08:17 So 1710 would be over.
08:20 Ooh, wow.
08:23 And we are favored by 2.5.
08:26 That is just, that's desperation money pumping into the kitty.
08:30 It's desperation.
08:31 And that's okay.
08:32 I like that.
08:33 I like that.
08:34 Nebraska fans are not abandoning the team.
08:36 They are pumping their money and they're putting their money where their mouth is and moving
08:40 that line.
08:41 Their defense is ranked higher than ours.
08:43 Right?
08:44 So I think this could be overall on it.
08:46 It's overall, we got a better rushing defense than they do.
08:50 And so I think it's going to be a defensive struggle.
08:53 Right?
08:54 But we have the Chubba factor, right?
08:58 And Chubba played this incredible game.
09:01 He played an incredible quarter and a half.
09:04 The rest of the middle part was just kind of stinky.
09:07 The first quarter was great.
09:08 The last half of the second, the fourth quarter was great.
09:11 The rest was just the car crash because you know, they, these, that's the plays that he's
09:17 got to run the plays that they call.
09:19 Go ahead.
09:20 What's your prediction?
09:21 So rushing defense, Nebraska's five, they're 18 total defense.
09:25 We're 15.
09:26 They're seven.
09:27 Okay.
09:28 So total offense, we're 113, they're 130.
09:32 So we've got a better offense.
09:33 They've got a slightly better defense.
09:35 We've got a better rush defense.
09:37 And you wonder why the under is 25.
09:41 Those are some spectacularly awful numbers.
09:44 And just you step back and you look at the Husker-Mac stats, stats, mashup, and they
09:48 pulled the ones where the other team has the lead and there's all sorts of, you know, Iowa
09:53 has leader.
09:54 Reds on offense.
09:55 Reds on defense.
09:57 First down defense.
09:58 Fewest penalty yards.
10:01 Power index.
10:04 Efficiency on defense.
10:05 Efficiency on special teams.
10:07 Let's talk special teams.
10:09 All three phases of the game have to work for us to win.
10:12 Special teams are absolutely critical.
10:13 We need a kicker.
10:14 We need our punter to show up.
10:15 Okay.
10:16 Michigan State was perfect weather and Boushini just laid an egg.
10:20 Okay.
10:21 So we got it.
10:22 We got to have good special teams.
10:23 I think offensively with Purdy, he's going to build on his last game.
10:28 I mean, his brother's in the pros and his brother's talking to him, I guarantee you.
10:33 And so he's going to get better.
10:35 So I like us, Bob, to do better offensively.
10:38 And I think our defense is going to play really, really well.
10:41 So I'm going to go out there and I'm going to call it 21 to 7 in the over.
10:48 Okay.
10:50 I think we're going to have a chubba day like we've never had.
10:53 And I'm going to 21 to 7 Nebraska in the over.
10:57 Okay.
10:58 21 to 7 Nebraska.
10:59 So we're going to break out and Iowa defense is going to come out and our defense is going
11:06 to hold up.
11:07 There you have it.
11:08 I think that Marcus Sattisfield has been eating a big pile of dog food for the last several
11:13 weeks.
11:14 I think he's going to throw the kitchen sink at Iowa this week.
11:17 I think you're going to see reverses.
11:18 You're going to see jet sweeps.
11:20 You're going to see option passes.
11:21 You're going to see all sorts of stuff you haven't seen all season for two reasons.
11:25 Number one, he needs to prove himself.
11:28 Number two, they want to prepare for next year by throwing some of these plays out there
11:31 and go, "We have to prepare for these now with Nebraska."
11:35 He's got nothing to lose.
11:36 If they lose this game, everybody will go, "Well, we made some progress."
11:40 And if they win this game, then he's a hero.
11:42 And all that criticism falls by the wayside.
11:45 But I think they're pulling out all the stops on offense and I think it will be 28-17 Nebraska.
11:57 So I think they're going to crush the under and Nebraska's going to win.
12:04 Because that's what we predict every week.
12:06 Have we predicted a Nebraska loss this year?
12:08 No, we're not very good prognosticators.
12:10 Yeah, we predicted that they'd score 40 points on Michigan.
12:13 How'd that one turn out?
12:16 We're learning.
12:17 We're learning.
12:18 We're learning.
12:19 We're not very good.
12:20 We're learning not to go to Vegas.
12:21 Yeah, this is why I did this.
12:23 I went to Vegas.
12:24 I put some bets down and I was wrong.
12:26 And so I'm wrong every time.
12:28 Don't bet with your heart.
12:29 Don't bet with your heart.
12:31 This podcast is not about my head.
12:34 I'm not here to freaking diagnose who's going to win.
12:36 I'm going to hear the root for the Huskers.
12:38 That's what we're here for.
12:40 We think the Huskers will win no matter what.
12:42 That's how it goes.
12:43 Well, both of this is, we don't talk about this in advance.
12:46 There's no scripting of the show.
12:48 So the fact that we're both calling a victory and we're both calling the over is pretty
12:52 interesting.
12:53 I bet you thought I was, you thought I was going to come out and call that Iowa was going
12:57 to win this game.
12:58 Well, you called our coaching staff fat and out of shape last week.
13:02 So I mean, yes, I was ready for it.
13:04 I was ready for anything.
13:05 I didn't say fat.
13:06 I didn't say fat.
13:07 I just said out of shape.
13:10 But you meant something different.
13:11 Yes.
13:12 Something different.
13:13 The new, the, the nuance of my phraseology was lost.
13:16 That's okay though.
13:17 That's why you had to issue a public clarification of your comments.
13:20 Joe Biden.
13:21 Cause I have knowledge.
13:22 Cause I have knowledge.
13:24 I have knowledge.
13:26 That's why you need to call your press secretary and uh, yeah.
13:31 So when I'm running against president Obama this year, Oh wait, I'm not running against
13:36 president Obama.
13:39 Here we are in North Dakota.
13:42 No we're in South Dakota.
13:44 But anyway, um, let's not devolve into that particular mess.
13:48 Let's just stick to offensive coordinators.
13:50 So we're gonna, we're gonna get together tomorrow on black Friday and root for yourself, for
13:56 yourself, right?
13:57 For the home team.
13:58 And if they don't win, it's a shame.
14:01 So uh, yeah, I think I, I'm feeling, you know, listen, I've been hopeful all season.
14:08 What the hell?
14:09 I'm going to win every week.
14:10 What's it going to cost me if, if, if Nebraska loses, what's it going to cost me?
14:13 Nothing.
14:14 Just some derision from my friends.
14:16 Big deal.
14:17 They derived me anyway.
14:19 So don't forget your special 9am appointment tomorrow about Brady.
14:23 Oh yeah.
14:25 Yeah.
14:26 Does this make me eligible for the PGA?
14:29 You see on the PGA tour, they're going to start having cold plunges at every event.
14:33 I'm like this cold place.
14:34 Four words, four words that Bob Brady doesn't like, Santa and cold plunge.
14:40 We bought out the facility so you can do it in private.
14:43 You be sweet.
14:44 I went to the gym yesterday.
14:47 I got my song and cold plug yesterday.
14:49 It felt really good.
14:51 Also contributes, also contributes to positive sleep vibes.
14:55 I sleep like a baby.
14:57 I sleep up like that.
14:58 I have no trouble with sleep.
14:59 It's like I could fall asleep right on this table right now.
15:01 If you give me five minutes, it's like I didn't have to know.
15:04 Chip and I are friends.
15:07 We get along well.
15:08 All right, Jay Stockwell.
15:09 You know how we take this out.
15:12 Why don't you take us out this time?
15:15 Oh I don't know how to do it though.
15:16 I don't really know how to do it.
15:17 Come on, I've been doing it every week for 12 weeks now.
15:22 And you've been a lifelong Nebraska fan and you don't know how to run the cheer?
15:26 You know, Tim Stiles did it for us the whole time.
15:28 He was the guy on that cheer.
15:30 So you've been watching the cheer.
15:32 It's time for you to put some new shoes on.
15:34 You know what?
15:35 We're throwing caution to the wind.
15:38 We're changing everything up.
15:40 We're getting desperate.
15:41 All right, let me try this.
15:42 Take us out, Stockwell.
15:43 Okay, here we go.
15:44 Go Big Red!
15:45 That was pretty good.
15:46 Yeah, wow.
15:47 That was like the extended disco version of that song.
15:58 It's like, does it come on like a 12-inch and you got to play it at 78 RPM?
16:02 Holy cow.
16:03 We got to send this to Stiles and get it great.
16:07 Go Big Red!
16:10 What are you giving me on a scale of 10 there, Bob Frady?
16:12 Oh, I'll give you 200 on a scale of 10 because it was about 20 times as long as a normal
16:16 cheer.
16:17 So you get 10 for the normal cheer and then 190 for all the extra.
16:21 All right, if anybody likes that, send me a tweet and we'll get some positive tweets
16:26 going other than Bob Frady, like negative and being about to catch us, you know.
16:30 Hey, listen, you know, you got to be positive, baby.
16:33 You got to be positive.
16:34 All right, Huskers, go win it.
16:36 Let's bring it home because we want to go to a ball game.
16:39 SMU will be there live if we go to a ball game.
16:42 All right.
16:43 See you later, Stockwell.
16:44 Happy Thanksgiving.
