Judging is underway for the 2023 Bong Bong Picnic Races Fashions on the Field.
Transcript
00:00 Now, Jade, you and I have discussed at length the fashions in the field thing and the fact
00:07 that in the city, obviously, the looks are very, very constructed.
00:11 Obviously, a lot of time and effort has gone into this.
00:14 And so we're going to find out who you are and why this and how.
00:20 Switch on in.
00:22 First of all, what's your name?
00:24 My name is Amy Lewis and I'm from Selwyn Isles.
00:28 I went with a dress like this because it's spring racing.
00:32 It's very in trend at the moment, the puffy sleeves.
00:34 And I just wanted something a little bit different.
00:38 Do you always come to this race?
00:40 I haven't been for the last couple of years because it hasn't been on.
00:42 I've been once previously.
00:44 None of us have been for the last couple of years.
00:46 It's a bit of a scandal.
00:48 But tell us about the hat.
00:50 So the hat was custom designed.
00:54 It was originally a beige fascinator that I needed to add a little bit more colour to.
00:58 So we added the flowers into it just to give it a little bit more of a pop.
01:02 Beautiful.
01:04 And what's your dress?
01:06 The dress is a custom designed dress as well.
01:08 Are you a sewer?
01:10 Who's the person behind the custom manufacture?
01:12 My mum.
01:14 She creates all my dresses for me.
01:16 I just pick the design and the material and she puts it all together.
01:18 Is your mother here today?
01:20 Yes.
01:22 Can I give a wave out to the mother?
01:24 Thank you.
01:26 Where is she?
01:28 She's just there.
01:30 So fantastic.
01:34 I love it.
01:36 So my fair lady.
01:38 Now this next one I've been intrigued by since the moment she passed me.
01:40 There's a piece of Perspex balanced on your head.
01:42 How did that happen?
01:44 And why did that happen?
01:46 Because it's my favourite colour.
01:48 That works.
01:50 That works.
01:52 [inaudible]
01:54 [inaudible]
01:56 Come and stand here.
01:58 Alright.
02:00 Come on down.
02:02 I'm going to stand here.
02:04 Still on camera.
02:06 [inaudible]
02:08 So.
02:10 Tell us about you. Tell us about your outfit.
02:12 Well, actually.
02:14 They told me I shouldn't admit it but I bought it three years ago for Bon Bon.
02:16 And I've been saving it ever since.
02:18 I'm glad I finally got a chance to see the light of day.
02:20 It was a bit drier at the time.
02:22 And I was just looking for something that reflected the landscape around me.
02:24 The rain, though.
02:26 I love it.
02:28 Get on the stage next.
02:30 I'm very well.
02:32 You are.
02:34 Hi.
02:36 What is your name?
02:38 Tell me about this outfit.
02:40 And tell me why this outfit is so special.
02:42 I'm very well.
02:44 I'm very well.
02:46 Tell me about this outfit.
02:48 And tell me why this hat.
02:50 My name is Olivia.
02:52 And the reason I chose this outfit today is because my late grandmother, Betty Mumford,
02:54 owned a dairy cattle farm down the road here in Evoca.
02:56 And the dress really reminded me, not only of her garden, which was incredible, but also the hat.
02:58 Her favourite colour was red.
03:00 And it's also called the Poppy Hat, which was her favourite flower as well.
03:02 I love that I remember.
03:04 Just remember your nan.
03:06 She was an amazing woman.
03:08 And I love that I remember.
03:10 Just remember your nan.
03:12 She was an amazing woman.
03:14 She was an absolute godsend.
03:16 Sad to see her go.
03:18 I think it's important for everybody to remember that what was this place before it was a racecourse, ladies and gentlemen, it was a dairy farm.
03:20 Dairy farm is good people, Southern Highlands women.
03:22 So, when we saw you,
03:24 talk to us about that.
03:26 When we saw you,
03:28 talk to us about that.
03:30 When we saw you,
03:32 talk to us about that.
03:34 When we saw you,
03:36 talk to us about that.
03:38 When we saw you,
03:40 talk to us about that.
03:42 Talk to us about that.
03:44 When Freddie and I saw you, we both said to each other,
03:46 "Now that's a look."
03:48 And we both agreed that
03:50 we thought it was a look because
03:52 it was obviously, authentically you.
03:54 The colour
03:56 really suits you.
03:58 You're just yourself in a really comfortable outfit
04:00 where you've come to a beautiful event
04:02 to have fun.
04:04 And we both thought that that was really important.
04:06 All about comfort at Bong Bong because you never know what's going to happen next.
04:10 So,
04:12 that's a 10. Thank goodness.
04:14 Come on down.
04:16 Here you are. And why are you wearing polka dots?
04:24 I'm Fiona from
04:26 FX Business Solutions and we sponsor
04:28 Bong Bong races.
04:30 I'm wearing polka dots because I bought this dress
04:32 two years ago and this is the first time
04:34 we've got to come to Bong Bong.
04:36 So I'm really excited.
04:38 It's a fashion theme that is going to set fashion back
04:40 decades in the long run, ladies and gentlemen.
04:42 I think we should all pause to think about this.
04:44 Next!
04:46 Grandmama!
04:48 [cheering]
04:50 You can't see this from out there
04:54 but this lady has
04:56 Audrey Hepburn in her hair. Why?
04:58 I just really love hair.
05:00 I love hair style.
05:02 We won't torture you with that one.
05:06 I'm loving it.
05:08 And you are. We didn't do that bit though.
05:10 Sorry? You are.
05:12 Rosalie from the... Rosalie!
05:14 Now this one I love.
05:16 This one I love for so many reasons.
05:18 Because, what did we discuss
05:20 about Bong Bong not being, Jade?
05:22 Not being.
05:24 Not being. Not being a city race.
05:26 It's a country race
05:28 with country attitudes,
05:30 country people, people comfortable
05:32 in their beautiful, expressive clothing
05:34 and having a great time.
05:36 Carrying exquisite accessories.
05:38 I'm loving the bag.
05:40 Thank you, Gucci.
05:42 Gorgeous Gucci.
05:46 And you are? Jennifer.
05:48 Jennifer, thank you for bringing gorgeous Gucci to the stage.
05:50 Oh!
05:52 Pretty in pink!
05:54 But that's the thing.
06:00 It's not one thing, it can be all things.
06:02 If it's one thing that we just said it was going to be,
06:04 then it's obviously the other thing.
06:06 So quick, tell us about why pink?
06:08 Well, it started with the hat, which was from my grandmother.
06:10 So then we went from the hat down
06:12 and it just worked.
06:14 I love that everybody is dressing for Bong Bong
06:16 out of their granny's closets.
06:18 They're the best.
06:20 Is your granny a local?
06:22 Camden.
06:24 That's close enough!
06:26 Now this little 60s number
06:28 I'm loving.
06:30 If you noticed closely in the 1967 footage
06:32 they were giving away little white bags like this.
06:34 Tell us about this.
06:36 Why this? Why now? Why Bong Bong?
06:38 Who are you?
06:40 I'm Julia. I chose this dress.
06:42 I've had it in my cupboard, being sustainable.
06:44 It just reminded me of
06:46 an old town New York number.
06:48 It's woolen, good for the southern highlands weather.
06:50 What could be more
06:52 old school New York than Bong Bong?
06:54 That's the first question that needs to be asked.
06:56 And the other thing that needs to be said is
06:58 see how selling it by sustainability
07:00 is a much more pleasant thing
07:02 to hear than I couldn't come out of the house for two years?
07:04 We're loving it.
07:06 Now I'm seeing Anne Boleyn in this little
07:10 headdress, but Jade?
07:12 She's dropping the fans.
07:18 Oh God, the rain.
07:20 So, why Anne Boleyn's head?
07:22 Not her head, obviously.
07:24 I love the colour.
07:26 It's me.
07:28 It suited me. Why not?
07:30 I know it's raining.
07:34 You think I didn't notice that next?
07:36 I am going to hold the microphone
07:44 in front of your faces and then I'm going to get you off the stage
07:46 as quickly as possible. Don't worry gentlemen, your hat won't get ruined.
07:48 It's fine. Quick. Who are you?
07:50 Why this dress? What's going on?
07:52 Well,
07:54 I just liked it, so I put it on.
07:56 You sound like a woman who
08:00 I would not
08:02 argue that with.
08:04 Can I just say, don't drink and drive, but if you do
08:06 local criminal lawyer, give me a call.
08:08 It's important
08:10 to have the appropriate friends. Next!
08:12 I'm loving this. We've got little splashes of orange, ladies and gentlemen.
08:16 Tell us about it.
08:18 I just hope we get out of the rain because White's got a problem
08:20 in the wet.
08:22 Everybody else, go inside.
08:24 We'll regroup on that bit. You go in, I'll do
08:26 the rest of the stage and have him explain to us
08:28 why this is happening.
08:30 What is that?
08:32 Let's just look down the barrel of the camera, just over there,
08:34 and explain why this hat happened.
08:36 People ask me why this hat, and then I look up
08:38 and I see the rain
08:40 and I am the smartest man alive
08:42 with my large hat.
08:44 Nobody likes a boaster, sir.
08:46 Now this guy was travelling with this guy.
08:50 They seem to be doing this little
08:52 Times in History moment.
08:54 Quick, tell us about yours.
08:56 Jack, blue suit, white blue.
08:58 Apparently there was a message in that for all of us.
09:02 Is there any more of it?
09:04 Jade will be judging you inside shortly.
09:08 Now there is tweed, there is tweed, and this man
09:14 knows about tweed, I suspect, and he's going to tell us about tweed.
09:16 Why tweed, sir?
09:18 Well, I woke up this morning and looked in the mirror
09:20 and saw my grandad, so I thought
09:22 that's what we should wear.
09:24 And I noticed that you came with an entourage inside.
09:26 I did.
09:28 And then they ran off and abandoned me.
09:30 Here we are.
09:32 No, you have one here.
09:34 They're just hiding behind
09:36 the branding.
09:38 I'm loving it.
09:40 Do you dress like this all the time?
09:42 No, not in the library.
09:44 Sensible.
09:46 We'll be inside shortly.
09:48 This is everything.
09:50 Tell us about your velvet jacket.
09:56 It's a Gibson jacket.
09:58 I like to thank my sponsors for Gibson.
10:00 And it's smooth and sultry.
10:02 Ladies, it's smooth and sultry.
10:06 And he does a turn too.
10:12 Quick, let's get the little man out here.
10:14 See?
10:16 Just when you think you had all the moves down.
10:18 Then the real competition rolls out.
10:20 So, can you tell us your name
10:22 and tell us a little bit about your outfit?
10:24 My name is Henry Cork Davies
10:26 and I made this outfit for myself.
10:28 You made this?
10:32 You made this outfit, Henry?
10:34 Wow.
10:36 We were impressed before, but now the ground is shaking beneath our feet.
10:38 The ground is absolutely shaking, Henry.
10:40 Can you feel it?
10:42 I can feel it.
10:44 How long have you been sewing, Henry?
10:46 Pardon?
10:48 How long have you been sewing?
10:50 I mean, I don't make it.
10:52 I just dress myself.
10:54 He's the stylist, he's not the manufacturer.
10:56 We've cleared that up.
10:58 Get inside out of the way.
11:00 Apparently some people are sponsored.
11:04 I will leave it to you to judge who this person was sponsored by.
11:06 So, why are you wearing this?
11:08 Do you need help?
11:10 Well, look, I love cheese, love Cheezels.
11:12 Makes sense.
11:14 And ladies, just so you know, the Cheezels are on the underwear too.
11:16 I have it on good authority, they taste like Cheezels.
11:18 None of us know what to do with that, sir.
11:22 So, now, we've got a little mixed media moment here.
11:26 This gentleman is going to come along and he's going to tell us his name
11:30 and explain to us why he's wearing cowboy boots with this ensemble.
11:32 Well, actually, I was wearing these
11:34 when I won the silver medal
11:36 at the Commonwealth Games in 1997
11:38 and I haven't taken them off since.
11:40 And so I wore the gold today because I feel like I can do one better.
11:42 That is the picture number eight.
11:46 Remember him in your dreams, ladies and gentlemen.
11:48 Thank you, sir.
11:50 Now,
11:52 my grandmother would describe this man as a cat,
11:54 I'm sure, possibly a bounder.
11:56 Quick, tell us all about yourself, sir.
11:58 My name is Tom
12:00 and I want to give a special shout out to Ben,
12:02 who, I was,
12:04 I didn't have a number and he
12:06 wrangled my way into this.
12:08 Everybody needs friends who will sort out their problems for them.
12:10 If you don't have some, get some.
12:12 Quick.
12:14 So, come and tell us about
12:20 why you chose this outfit to solve your friends' problems.
12:22 I'm sorry, what?
12:24 I didn't, uh, security said I could do it for my friends' problems.
12:26 Oh, yeah.
12:28 Tell us about your suit, sir.
12:30 It's just a normal Friday's outfit, really.
12:32 What goes on in your world
12:34 that makes this normal, sir?
12:36 Well, you know, it's always fun
12:38 to get your legs out and look around.
12:40 And come to Bon Bon.
12:42 Indeed.
12:44 Why wouldn't you?
12:46 We will be inside to judge you momentarily.
12:48 Oh, you're inside to judge me.
12:50 We started already, but it's not finished.
12:52 It's a very scientific process.
12:54 Now,
12:58 Bonjour, Michel.
13:00 Bonjour, ça va?
13:02 Qu'est-ce que tu fais dans Bon Bon, ce soir?
13:04 That's all I got.
13:06 Ah, good.
13:08 Madame Gardner-Brown would be terrified, embarrassed, and horrified
13:10 at that shameful display.
13:12 Quick, tell us about this outfit.
13:14 Who doesn't love a three-piece at the races?
13:16 We'll take that as a rhetorical.
13:20 What would you like to know?
13:24 No, I'm happy with that. James?
13:26 Totally happy. Perfect answer.
13:28 Oh, now I've got one more gentleman. Quick.
13:30 Yeah, we're fine.
13:32 Hi.
13:36 Just look over here to the camera.
13:38 Straight ahead.
13:40 So,
13:42 your suit is the most damaged.
13:44 Sorry. Quick, tell us about the suit. Why?
13:46 Blue, favourite colour.
13:48 Gay.
13:50 I like the nice, you know,
13:52 fit.
13:54 I mean,
13:56 I'm well qualified in the field,
13:58 but I'm still very confused about that.
14:00 It's good to be back.
14:02 Well, every day is great for me.
14:04 So, is this your first time at Bon Bon?
14:06 Yes.
14:08 Beautiful. Beautiful. Love horses.
14:10 Let's get inside.
14:12 Quick.
14:14 Just before we go inside, I just want to say thank you.
14:16 The thing about
14:18 Park Properties' sponsorship is that
14:20 they are not a local real estate agency.
14:22 They are.
14:26 They are based in Alexandria,
14:28 but they are here because Bon Bon is so iconic
14:30 that they thought, "What could we do?
14:32 Let's come to Bon Bon."
14:34 Nothing better to do.
14:36 Anyway, I would like to thank
14:38 Freddie and Jay
14:40 for the hard work they put into this.
14:42 All the contestants.
14:44 And a big thank you and a congratulation to the Bon Bon
14:46 Picnic Race Club for putting on such
14:48 another wonderful day's racing.
14:50 So, enjoy it, ladies and gentlemen.
14:52 Thank you very much.
14:54 Thank you, sir. Now, get out of the way.
14:56 We'll just get some prizes going on.
14:58 Now, everybody, I would like you to put your hands together
15:00 for this young man, Henry,
15:02 who we thought initially
15:04 had made his outfit, but in fact
15:06 he just dressed himself,
15:08 which I think is extremely
15:10 admirable.
15:12 Henry, I love everything you're wearing.
15:14 I love your pin on the lapel,
15:16 your sunglasses,
15:18 your tie,
15:20 the pocket tie.
15:22 I love the way your sleeves
15:24 go down below your jacket.
15:26 Obviously a man of style.
15:28 And I look
15:30 forward to judging you in years to come
15:32 because I feel that you
15:34 are going to be absolutely
15:36 a winner. But today,
15:38 I would like you to have this hat because
15:40 we all think that you're absolutely wonderful.
15:42 Would you like to say something to everybody?
15:50 No.
15:52 Thank you, Henry. You've been
15:54 an absolute star.
15:56 You have a wonderful day.
15:58 I love the polka dots.
16:00 Right, so
16:02 we're going to break for a couple of moments
16:04 and we'll be back with some prizes.
