00:00 The WWE Survivor Series should be a big night for WWE, but it actually was a massive headache.
00:07 Twitter fans and WWE themselves had led a lot of people to speculate on the return of
00:13 CM Punk, forcing the company to pre-announce Randy Orton's return to minimal fanfare.
00:19 But in doing so, they managed to avoid complete disaster.
00:25 In September of 2023, All Elite Wrestling terminated the contract of CM Punk after a
00:36 series of incidents culminating in a fight backstage with Jack Perry just before his
00:41 world title match with Samoa Joe at All In.
00:44 It sparked rumours, reports and all round speculation that Punk could make a return
00:49 to WWE - who he left in rather controversial fashion in 2014 when he was fired on his wedding
00:55 day.
00:56 WWE themselves started to add fuel to this speculation fire by making references on commentary
01:01 to previous Punk promos, and Shinsuke Nakamura began to use the GTS - Punk's finish - as
01:06 part of his repertoire.
01:07 It got to a point where WWE planned to shut this all down, with Triple H being prepared
01:13 to dismiss any questions about Punk's return at the Fastlane post-show press conference.
01:18 WWE were ready to announce that it was a firm no.
01:22 And that stance did not change, and it didn't change in the lead-up to Survivor Series which
01:27 was being held in Punk's hometown of Chicago.
01:30 Reportedly Punk was not planned for the show.
01:33 However, Sean Ross Sapp on his Fightful Backstage Report podcast from November 20th, 2023 said,
01:39 "It would not surprise me if Punk and Triple H had a call.
01:43 I will never write off a return."
01:46 Instead it was Randy Orton who made his return to WWE, with SRS adding in that Backstage
01:52 Report podcast that Orton was always the plan, and had been for months.
01:57 But the return did not go as planned.
02:00 Orton was originally supposed to be a surprise reveal at Survivor Series being the fifth
02:04 member of Team Cody against The Judgment Day, but because of the CM Punk speculation - some
02:10 of which was done by WWE themselves - they had to pre-announce Orton so as to not give
02:17 false expectations going into the PPV.
02:19 Fightful Select reported Randy Orton's reveal was done intentionally as to not make fans
02:24 believe CM Punk would be the partner.
02:27 Because if there's one thing that Chicago likes to do, it's hijack wrestling shows
02:31 chanting for CM Punk.
02:32 Instead Orton was announced as the fifth member of Team Cody on the go-home edition of Raw.
02:37 The problem was, Orton wasn't there.
02:40 Which meant that what should have been one of the biggest wrestling returns of 2023 - Orton
02:45 has been out of action for 18 months - was just a whimper of a promo where Cody didn't
02:51 even say Randy's name.
02:52 Orton's big wrestling return was, more or less, a graphic on Twitter.
02:57 SRS also added on his Raw post shows that WWE wanted to make sure fans weren't reading
03:02 too much into commentary references to Punk or Nakamura using the GTS.
03:07 But none of that didn't really help at all.
03:10 Fans were still looking for clues, fans were still looking for easter eggs and tied themselves
03:15 in not trying to find signs that Punk was coming back - which included a Nakamura promo
03:20 where he was looking for his mystery opponent.
03:23 Sean Ross Sapp added on Fightful Select, "talent that we've spoken to have not been informed
03:27 as to the context of Shinsuke Nakamura's call."
03:30 Well that will not help the rumours and speculation, will it?
03:35 And Living Colour releasing a 2023 remaster of Cult of Personality the day before Survivor
03:41 Series didn't help either.
03:43 But while the Orton reveal was not befitting the return news, it's a miracle that we're
03:48 getting Randy back in the ring at all.
03:50 His father Bob Orton revealed to Sportskeeda in May of 2023 that while Orton wanted to
03:55 come back to wrestling, his doctors had advised him not to.
04:00 His actual doctors had told him not to wrestle anymore.
04:05 Fightful Select added to that in their report in August of 2023, "Doctors have told Orton
04:10 that wrestling in the future isn't a good idea."
04:14 Randy Orton's career was nearly over from this injury, but this isn't the only time
04:20 Randy's WWE career has almost been over.
04:25 There's always been this joke about Randy Orton that he doesn't take bumps.
04:29 He was once in a ladder match where he didn't take any big bumps, and that's the entire
04:34 point of being in a ladder match.
04:36 He sort of got this label of being "lazy" because he was so good he didn't need to
04:41 try.
04:42 He was even asked about this in 2017 on a radio show where he replied that he wasn't
04:46 lazy, he just stopped giving as much of a crap.
04:49 Lol.
04:50 But for someone who has been criticised for being lazy and not taking big enough bumps,
04:54 he has picked up some major injuries over his 20 years in WWE.
04:59 His first injury came shortly after his WWE debut in 2002, where he injured his shoulder.
05:05 Now you'll be hearing a lot about his shoulders for the next few minutes.
05:08 But this injury has since been described as a blessing in disguise, as while he was off
05:13 he became part of the creative plans for Triple H's new faction, Evolution.
05:17 He separated his shoulder a few years later at One Night Stand 2008 during a WWE Championship
05:22 match with Triple H, and just as he was cleared to return a few months later, he was in a
05:27 motorcycle accident that re-broke his collarbone.
05:31 It could have been worse though as he told WWE.com, "Without a helmet, I would be dead."
05:36 Two years later in 2010, Orton dislocated his shoulder during a match with Edge at Over
05:41 The Limit when he was punching the mat to set up for the RKO.
05:43 That's right, he dislocated his shoulder doing his taunt.
05:48 That would be like me dislocating my finger when I do my D-A-D-T-OW.
05:53 During his feud with Wade Barrett in 2012, they did a spot where Barrett threw him down
05:56 a flight of stairs, which herniated a disc in his back which kept him away from the ring
06:00 for a month.
06:01 And shortly after returning, he got a concussion from doing an RKO to The Big Show.
06:06 That's right, he picked up a concussion doing something he does all the time.
06:10 That would be like me getting a concussion from being an annoying prick.
06:14 And to round off 2012, he dislocated his shoulder at that year's Tribute to the Troops, with
06:19 WWE doing Angle with the Shield to write him off TV to recover.
06:23 Man, 2012 was a rough year for Randy Orton.
06:27 In 2015 he picked up another shoulder injury during his feud with the Wyatt Family.
06:32 He was supposed to be on the pre-show for Hell in a Cell teaming with Dean Ambrose,
06:35 but that match was pulled after Orton threw his shoulder out, taking out the trash.
06:41 That's right, he got injured doing a normal, everyday household chore.
06:47 That would be like me getting injured licking Oli Davis' kitchen floor.
06:52 He would be on the shelf for nine months returning just in time to pick up a head injury from
06:56 Brock Lesnar in that infamous SummerSlam match.
06:59 And that brings us to our present day, where Orton injured his back in May of 2022, which
07:05 kept him on the shelf until 2023's Survivor Series.
07:09 Now the reason Orton has suffered so many shoulder related injuries over his career
07:13 is because he has hypermobile shoulders, which means they can pop in and out easier than
07:18 say yours and mine do.
07:20 The longer he wrestled, the more wear and tear his shoulders took, which made them easier
07:25 to hurt - hence why he injured his shoulders doing everyday things like his taunt or taking
07:30 out the garbage.
07:31 And while mounting injuries could have led to the end of Orton's career in WWE, there's
07:36 also been backstage issues that have been well documented over the years.
07:42 In the wake of the death of Eddie Guerrero in 2006 at just 38 years old, WWE introduced
07:48 and implemented the Wellness Policy, a two-step test to check if their talent were clean and
07:54 healthy.
07:55 It wasn't just a drugs test, it was a wellness test.
07:57 It in fact diagnosed MVP's Wolf Parkinson White Syndrome, which could have been fatal
08:02 if gone undiscovered.
08:03 If a talent failed the Wellness Policy, they would be suspended for 30 days for their first
08:08 failure, 60 days for their second, and an immediate termination for their third failure.
08:15 Some big stars were suspended for their failures of the Wellness Policy.
08:19 In 2006 Kurt Angle, Ryback, then Indevelopmental and Rob Van Dam were suspended.
08:24 RBD was WWE Champion at the time.
08:28 And someone else suspended in that first wave of the Wellness Policy was Randy Orton, who
08:33 was suspended for 30 days in August of 2006.
08:37 He was then suspended again, this time for 60 days in May of 2012.
08:42 While it's never been confirmed, David Bixenspan wrote in a 2014 edition of Figure Four Weekly
08:48 that there's an argument that Orton should have had more failures against his name.
08:53 And this also coincided with the new "Redemption" program which was introduced in 2013.
08:58 Perhaps coincidentally, one week before, Orton won the world title at Summerslam.
09:04 The Redemption program, which CM Punk buried on his Art of Wrestling appearance with Colt
09:08 Cabana, gave wrestlers a chance to work off their strikes.
09:11 Bixenspan adds that, "Backstage, there was a lot of joking that the changes were for
09:16 Orton."
09:17 On that Art of Wrestling podcast, Punk exclaims, "I was like, 'You're going to f***ing
09:21 amend the f***ing drugs test policy because of people who have two strikes that they can
09:25 f***ing either fail again or work one of those strikes off, continue to do drugs, and you're
09:29 going to tell me I have to take another piss test?'"
09:33 He may be clean of drugs and alcohol, but his mouth is filthy.
09:36 This Redemption program, jokingly referred to as the "Orton Rule", was argued a way
09:42 for WWE to save face when questions were asked as to why top stars like Randy Orton weren't
09:47 being punished for failing drugs tests.
09:50 Just hilariously, Kurt Angle revealed on his podcast that Orton and RBD would just
09:55 pay the fines that they'd get for failing drug tests for marijuana.
09:59 Angle jokes they asked, "How much were the fines and how many drugs would I do this year?"
10:04 so they wanted to pay the money up front.
10:06 "I think the fine was $2,000.
10:08 So they would just say, 'Here, take 14 grand.
10:12 I'm good.'
10:13 They would bypass the test and they wouldn't get suspended."
10:17 It became common parlance in WWE that this was "weed tax".
10:22 Sean Ross Sapp confirmed in 2022 that WWE no longer handed out suspensions for marijuana
10:27 use.
10:28 There have also been stories - though some are believed to be blown out of proportion
10:32 - about his backstage behaviour.
10:34 He was once accused of "pooping" in the bag of WWE diva Rochelle Lohan, but she herself
10:39 has said that never happened.
10:41 He's also been accused of having anger management issues and flipping out on wrestlers during
10:46 matches, the most infamous of which being Kofi Kingston and Mr. Kennedy.
10:51 There was also that Kurt Bauer story about the handshake, but I won't go too much into
10:55 that, I'll just say that allegedly happened.
10:58 But Orton was never punished, and never fired, because he was a top guy.
11:04 And if WWE let one of their top stars go, they might go to another wrestling company
11:09 and make them some money.
11:12 And that nearly happened in 2019, when Orton teased leaving WWE to sign with All Elite
11:19 Wrestling.
11:20 In October of 2019, Randy Orton posted this image on Instagram.
11:25 It was simply a photo of him by a sign that said "Elite Level".
11:30 While that is interesting in of itself, he also tagged Cody Rhodes, who was an AEW EVP
11:35 at the time, Chris Jericho who had just signed for All Elite Wrestling earlier in the year,
11:39 and WWE names like The Revival, Luke Harper and Riddick Moss.
11:43 The post was also tagged in Jacksonville, the home of AEW, and came with the simple
11:48 phrase, "Tick Tock, Tick Tock".
11:51 Orton's post coincided with the news that his 10 year deal with WWE expired the following
11:57 year and he was in negotiations to re-sign.
12:00 AEW had launched earlier in that year, and Tony Khan had spoken at length about spending
12:05 millions of dollars - especially after securing a deal with TNT to show their wrestling program
12:10 - to sign the biggest names he possibly could to bolster his roster.
12:15 Tagging The Revival and Luke Harper was clearly a pointed gesture, as all three reportedly
12:20 had eyes on leaving WWE for AEW, with Harper requesting his release from the company in
12:26 early 2019.
12:27 I still to this day don't know why he tagged Riddick Moss.
12:31 Dave Meltzer wrote in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, "Orton had inquired about AEW
12:36 from the time of its launch, as a large number of WWE stars did.
12:40 Fightful Select added that Orton has not made it a secret backstage that he would be willing
12:45 to talk to All Elite Wrestling if the opportunity presented itself."
12:49 He also talked about enjoying the first episode of Dynamite on a Twitch stream.
12:53 Orton also began to send tweets to people like Will Ospreay, who had gotten into a Twitter
12:57 spat with Seth Rollins in that same time period, asking for a match with him with the target
13:02 date of June 2020 - essentially announcing publicly when his contract with WWE was coming
13:09 to an end.
13:10 It was widely thought at the time that this was just a negotiation tactic by Orton, playing
13:16 both sides off against each other to get the best possible deal if he were to sign with
13:20 AEW or, more likely, re-sign with WWE.
13:25 And Orton did just that, he re-signed with WWE and told Corey Graves on his After The
13:30 Bell podcast, "I was just having fun."
13:33 More so now than ever, I'm aware of other guys like Will Ospreay and other guys that
13:38 work with Cody.
13:39 I'm watching a little bit more wrestling, I'm not in the WWE bubble as much as I've
13:43 been for almost the last two decades.
13:45 This might be upsetting for some people, but I never really saw myself leaving WWE.
13:52 Orton re-signed that contract in 2019.
13:55 It was a five year deal.
13:57 Next year, that deal is up.
13:59 But while his contract is supposed to end next year, time will be added onto it - 18
14:04 months in fact for the injury - which means it won't expire now until 2025.
14:09 But even without the time being added, there's a very good chance that Orton would still
14:13 re-sign with WWE and not even consider going elsewhere like AEW or New Japan.
14:20 When he re-signed in 2019, he told Corey Graves, "I'm definitely happy being a WWE superstar.
14:26 He's made good money from WWE, has had his house show schedule reduced, has gotten to
14:31 make movies, and, to reiterate, has made a ton of money."
14:36 Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio, "Randy's made, I'd say, $3.5 million,
14:41 $4 million a year for years and years and years."
14:45 While everyone's salary was escalating when AEW started, Randy was making big money long
14:51 before that, so he should be set.
14:54 And as for those who have said that he's lazy or unmotivated - which seemed to go away
14:58 when his passion was rejuvenated with Matt Riddle - Randy Orton clearly loves wrestling.
15:05 Clearly loves pro wrestling.
15:06 If he didn't, if Randy decided that he didn't want to wrestle anymore, he'd just stop.
15:12 His doctors have told him to stop, but he's come back.
15:15 The hypermobility in his shoulders is only going to get more wear and tear.
15:20 But he's come back.
15:21 I'd like to take you back to that Orton interview he did in 2017, as there's a bit
15:25 more to that quote.
15:27 He said, "The light bulb came on when I stopped giving as much of a crap.
15:31 I don't mean in the sense of being lazy or not caring, you know.
15:34 That's not true at all.
15:36 He's not lazy, he just doesn't give as much of a crap.
15:40 And he clearly does give a crap about pro wrestling."
15:43 But speaking of AEW and signing new talent, there's news that All Elite Wrestling is
15:48 in fact losing money.
15:51 But how true is that?
