00:00 what you guys have done, you know, starting three years ago
00:02 when they won one big 12 game
00:04 and worked to where they are right now.
00:07 You know, and he mentioned some things that I think
00:11 that we can certainly hang our hat on as well
00:13 as we move forward.
00:15 You know, one thing I told our team just then,
00:18 you know, I apologize to our seniors
00:19 that we didn't have this kind of year that they deserve.
00:22 You know, and I feel for them from the bottom of my heart.
00:25 I said, "Listen, we're going to help you guys out
00:26 any way we can, you know, in the future as far as jobs
00:30 or hopefully they can keep playing."
00:31 And then I told the freshmen and the underclassmen
00:34 that, you know, we're going to get to work this winter
00:37 as soon as you guys get back.
00:38 And I said, "It's going to be hard.
00:40 It's going to be really hard.
00:41 It's going to be really hard on us coaches
00:42 as well as you players."
00:44 You know, but they want that, and they --
00:46 obviously, they need it, but they want it as well.
00:49 And so this winter is going to be extremely difficult.
00:52 You know, the things that --
00:53 the reason we lost a lot of games this year was,
00:55 you know, we've talked about this on this play,
00:58 you know, not doing the things we need to do
01:00 to give yourself a chance.
01:03 And, again, it happened tonight.
01:05 And, you know, those are the things we're going to clean up.
01:08 I mean, it's unacceptable the way we played at times this year.
01:12 It's -- and it cost us a lot of games.
01:15 It cost us a lot of games.
01:16 And, you know, and so those are the things
01:19 that I'm looking forward to starting tomorrow
01:22 in this all season.
01:23 And, you know, we've got 22 guys committed to sign December 20th.
01:27 You know, I think it's a really good class.
01:29 And I say good, they're talented,
01:30 but they're also great people,
01:32 young men that we're going to bring in this program.
01:34 And then we're going to hit the portal hard December 4th.
01:37 It opens up.
01:39 We're going to have -- you know, we're looking to get,
01:41 you know, roughly 12 to 14 guys.
01:43 I mean, if we get them in January,
01:44 if we get them in the summer semester, but we have to.
01:48 We have to get some guys that can come in here
01:50 and help us win.
01:51 And so we're going to attack that hard.
01:53 And so those three fronts really is kind of the thing
01:55 that we're looking at as we move to the future.
01:59 But the kick right before halftime,
02:01 what goes in that process there?
02:05 Well, just so they don't get any kind of a return.
02:08 And obviously you didn't want to kick it like we did.
02:11 You know, we ended up bouncing right to the guy in the middle.
02:13 He gets, you know, close to midfield.
02:14 So it wasn't well executed.
02:17 The thought is to, you know, kick a squib,
02:20 you know, at a little bit of an angle
02:22 so that it gets ball-bounced around.
02:23 You know, our guys go cover it.
02:25 Now we're getting on to them.
02:27 I mean, the clock starts to run.
02:28 It wasn't as -- I don't even know what the time was.
02:30 Less than a minute maybe.
02:31 Yeah, yeah.
02:33 And, you know, and then it was just poor defense,
02:36 you know, the next three plays.
02:38 And, you know, but, yeah, way too much, poorly executed squib.
02:45 Defensively, what has gone wrong in the past three
02:49 or four years?
02:53 It seemed like it felt like there was progress
02:54 to get there.
02:56 Yeah.
02:59 Well, poor tackling, poor, you know,
03:04 hitting, you know, with the defense,
03:07 busted coverages, not tight coverage.
03:11 I mean, we all saw it.
03:14 And, you know, I don't know what that quarterback started out,
03:17 what, 10 for 10?
03:18 I know it may have been -- yeah, yeah.
03:20 So, you know, we got to get a lot better in the secondary.
03:25 And I think we've seen that all year.
03:28 And we're going to.
03:29 And so, you know, and then, you know,
03:32 another DPI called again tonight.
03:33 I mean, we got more, I feel like, every game,
03:35 at least one every game.
03:38 You know, we just got to get a lot better.
03:40 We got to coach better. We got to play better.
03:41 So it's -- there's a lot of things that didn't go well.
03:44 And then, you know, shoot,
03:46 I think it was 10 minutes to go in the game.
03:48 It was a two-score game. You know, we scored.
03:50 And then, next thing you know, it just gets out of hand.
03:51 You know, the quarterback got loose twice.
03:53 And he can really run.
03:55 But, you know, we didn't have --
03:57 there's guys, but I signed for the quarterback
03:59 on his own re-keep, which is simple plays.
04:02 And, you know, we're getting sucked down inside.
04:03 And he gets outside, and the kid can fly.
04:05 And, you know, so he didn't fit right.
04:07 And that's what happened.
04:09 You've been more momentum-taking
04:11 since the first half of the quarter.
04:16 I know.
04:18 Yeah, that happened in another game, too.
04:21 Yeah.
04:22 I may probably have at some point,
04:32 but I can't really remember, you know.
04:34 But it's very frustrating, obviously,
04:36 because you get some momentum, you're right.
04:37 And the next thing you know -- you know, because I was --
04:39 look, I was thinking about the fact before the first half,
04:41 let's let this clock go down, you know,
04:43 so we wasn't going to score.
04:44 We were going to leave them as small amounts as possible,
04:47 which we did.
04:48 You know, we ended up scoring a blitz, man.
04:49 Nice throw to Ryan, touchdown in 26 seconds.
04:52 We're in pretty good shape, and it's --
04:54 I mean, we got to score again.
04:55 I mean, it's just very frustrating.
04:57 I know it's frustrating to the fans.
04:59 I mean, I am -- I'm the most frustrated there is.
05:03 Like, I'm the one that is the coach of the team.
05:06 And I know our fans are frustrated.
05:07 I mean, I hear you out there, you know.
05:10 But I'm so frustrated with it.
05:13 So that's what we're going to work on.
05:14 We're going to work on getting this stuff fixed.
05:16 And in recruiting, get better players.
05:19 And then the coaches are going --
05:20 we're going to do all we can as coaches
05:22 to put the best players in there to make the best plays.
05:24 And we're going to, you know, get our scheme right
05:26 this offseason and figure out the best way for us
05:28 to hold people out of the end zone.
05:30 [Indistinct talking]
05:35 Yeah, no doubt.
05:36 Well, and that --
05:38 No, they know that we --
05:40 the freshmen that we got coming in, they're great kids.
05:43 We've been recruiting them for over a year.
05:45 And, you know, they understand what they're getting into.
05:49 They know they're coming in here to help us,
05:52 you know, with an opportunity to play.
05:54 They get that. And we need their help.
05:56 And, you know, we need their great attitudes
06:00 and their effort when they bring that in there as well.
06:02 And, you know, the great character they have.
06:04 And I think that's important for our football team.
06:07 And so, yeah, I mean, and then the transfer report.
06:11 They're going to be like, listen,
06:12 you need to come help that team.
06:13 You know, come play and help.
06:14 And so we got a lot to sell with this program.
06:17 It's a great city. It's a great school.
06:20 There's a lot of great people around this program.
06:22 And I think you talk to the guys that transferred in here,
06:27 they'll say the same thing. They've been to other colleges.
06:29 And they're going to say the same thing.
06:30 I mean, they get treated well.
06:32 They like it, you know.
06:34 So, you know, we're not that far off.
06:37 I know sometimes we can look and see.
06:39 We're not that far off. We're really not.
06:41 And we've got to sure up some things.
06:43 We've got to do a better job
06:45 with what we're trying to do with our guys.
06:47 But then get a few more players in here.
06:48 And, you know, I feel like these guys
06:50 are certainly going to help us.
06:51 Fielding, Ryan.
06:53 Okay.
06:55 I don't have anything to say.
06:56 You know, they're doing a great job
07:09 with all the shifts and motions.
07:11 They're one of the top teams in the country that do that.
07:14 And they utilize their tight ends and the motions.
07:17 They utilize the wildcat.
07:18 You know, I think tonight you guys probably three
07:20 or four times where the quarterback's
07:22 not the primary, you know, receiver of the ball.
07:24 But then they hand it to him, then he throws it.
07:26 They did that about three or four times.
07:27 They do a really good job of manipulating.
07:29 But what it does, it gets you out of position, you know.
07:32 And then you try to overcompensate.
07:34 And then, you know, there goes the running back
07:36 or the quarterback. I mean, they've done it all year.
07:39 They've done it to a lot of guys.
07:40 They're very good at what they do.
07:43 I also think their guys play extremely hard.
07:46 And they know their scheme.
07:48 They know their scheme on offense, on defense.
07:50 You know, again, he's been there three years.
07:53 He's done a really nice job with that.
07:54 And that's the result.
07:58 You mentioned the current performance.
08:00 He just walked away.
08:03 Yeah. Yeah, next week we're going to -
08:06 we're getting our guys in.
08:08 We're going to meet with our guys positionally, one-on-one.
08:12 You know, get a plan with those guys and see -
08:15 you know, really see where we're at.
08:17 You know, who's going to get in the portal,
08:18 who's going to stay, all those type things.
08:21 We'll do that first of next week.
08:23 You know, and then by the end of the week,
08:25 we - I think we got, you know,
08:27 there's high school championship games.
08:28 Probably go to Columbus or Akron
08:30 or wherever they're playing that to watch that.
08:33 Friday night, maybe, Saturday,
08:35 we're going to start recruiting this week.
08:36 So, we're - so, basically, the first half of the week,
08:38 we're dealing with our team.
08:40 And then we're recruiting the second half of the week
08:42 and then all the way through until signing day.
08:45 You know, December 4th is the portal.
08:46 When it opens up, and then we'll be able to bring some guys
08:48 in on campus with that.
08:49 We'll try to be very aggressive in that,
08:51 getting guys here early.
08:53 So, you guys, you'll probably hear about some of that stuff
08:55 that's happening that week of the 4th.
08:59 But next week will be really - I mean, and, you know,
09:01 quite honestly, shoot, some of these games
09:04 that were over Saturday,
09:05 we saw guys jump in the portal, too.
09:06 So, that stuff's going to happen.
09:08 Even though the 4th is the actual official date,
09:10 you know, people are going to put some stuff out now,
09:13 you know, if they're leaving, too.
09:14 So, that's going to start -
09:15 we're going to start that period right now.
09:18 Preston, Chad.
09:19 You look at the entire roster,
09:20 the whole amount of reps that guys -
09:24 under guys that are - haven't played as much this year.
09:27 You still got a few guys in the staff that will come.
09:29 Is that - do you have enough body of work
09:31 for them to practice going in,
09:32 put a little film in, and do it?
09:34 Yeah.
09:35 One of the key guys versus -
09:36 Yeah.
09:37 - the guys that -
09:38 No, I mean, I think we see them every day at practice, too.
09:40 You know, so, we have seen some guys,
09:44 you know, out there that play.
09:46 You know, like, for example, Barry Jackson played again tonight.
09:48 He's played four games.
09:49 I mean, we've seen some good stuff out of him.
09:52 But also practice, you know,
09:53 like I mentioned this a few weeks ago,
09:54 the last month we've been doing scrimmages,
09:56 you know, at the end of practice.
09:58 So, we're trying to evaluate every day
10:00 about what these guys can and can't do.
10:02 I feel like we've got a good handle on that.
10:06 You know, certainly guys that are young,
10:08 young in the program, you also have to see
10:10 kind of where they're going to be a year from now, you know.
10:12 And so, you've got to project a little bit
10:13 with some of those guys.
10:15 Guys that have been in the program
10:16 for two or three years, you kind of know where they are.
10:19 You know, so, yeah, I think we have seen enough.
10:22 You mentioned two years ago, Kansas,
10:23 one game last year, West Virginia and Iowa State,
10:27 both had reasons that they struggled.
10:30 Does that give you, like, a path?
10:32 Yeah. A direction to follow?
10:34 Arizona's another team that this is their third year,
10:38 and they were doing really well.
10:40 You know, and I've been a part of it.
10:42 I mean, you know, I think it takes time.
10:44 I've mentioned that.
10:45 I mean, it takes time for guys, you know,
10:47 to understand exactly, the players understand
10:48 what we're trying to get out of them, and then vice versa.
10:51 And, you know, I think the difference is this day and age,
10:57 now you're dealing with this portal stuff,
11:00 is it's difficult now.
11:01 It's difficult as far as your players
11:03 that are on your roster,
11:04 and then now you're having to go get some.
11:06 So, you know, you can't --
11:08 to me, you can't go get too many, you know,
11:11 because that's not good either,
11:12 because we've seen some things out there in the country
11:13 that that's kind of backfired.
11:16 But you have to get enough.
11:17 You have to get the right mix and the right type player
11:20 come in here and add into your culture,
11:21 because I think the culture piece
11:23 is the thing to get overlooked so much more,
11:25 maybe than just the talent piece.
11:27 Last couple of deals in there.
11:29 [Inaudible]
11:36 Yeah.
11:37 [Inaudible]
11:43 Yeah. I mean, I really like Ron.
11:45 I'm -- you know, that's what I told the seniors.
11:47 You know, some of these guys, I've only been here a year,
11:49 so you don't get a chance to really know them, you know.
11:51 And Ron's got the right stuff about him.
11:54 And I really -- I hate he missed,
11:55 I mean, four or five games this year.
11:57 Really could have used his leadership,
12:00 but his playmaking ability.
12:01 I mean, this guy's -- how versatile is this guy?
12:02 I mean, he can run on one end, he can catch one end.
12:05 He threw one tonight.
12:06 I mean, he's also a punt returner.
12:08 You know, he's a super talented guy.
12:10 I'm fortunate with his injuries throughout his career.
12:12 I feel like he's had a ton of injuries,
12:14 but he's going to be successful in what he does
12:17 throughout his -- whatever career he decides to go into,
12:20 because he's got the right stuff about him.
12:21 And I really -- I miss that,
12:23 that I'm only going to get the one year with him.
12:25 And there's a lot of those guys like that.
12:27 But, man, he's been fun the last few weeks
12:29 to be able to watch practice
12:30 and to go out and make plays on games.
12:33 Any final questions?
12:34 During your staff transition, what was the goal?
12:37 Ooh, that's a good question, man.
12:51 I know -- I feel like, you know, everywhere you go this season
12:57 and the things we've done with our team,
13:00 you know, we have guys come in and speak
13:01 and just kind of pour into our staff
13:04 and also pour into our team.
13:06 And I feel like everybody talks about resiliency, you know,
13:08 so -- and then how you come out of it, you know,
13:10 how it can be a good thing, you know,
13:13 when you go through something really, really tough
13:15 and you learn from it and you continue to grow.
13:17 And then when you get on the other side,
13:19 you're going to be so much better for it, you know.
13:22 It's extremely difficult, you know,
13:23 to go through something like this.
13:26 But I do -- I mean, I've been through
13:28 some tough times in my career,
13:29 so I do know what it feels like to have success,
13:32 and it makes it so much sweeter.
13:35 You know, I think the thing that I hate the most is that people --
13:40 sometimes people and, I guess, fans,
13:42 they don't -- they can't see what I can see.
13:45 I mean, they don't see the future.
13:46 They don't see the vision.
13:47 They don't see what's going to happen.
13:49 But I think in business or in life
13:52 or in anything that you're in,
13:54 and if you're going through something extremely tough,
13:56 if you don't have hope, then what do you have?
13:59 If you got nothing and, you know,
14:01 you might as well quit and shut it down.
14:04 We're trying to teach our guys the exact opposite of that
14:07 because we're in a world full of despair,
14:10 full of hate, full of negativity,
14:13 everywhere we look.
14:14 And when you don't do good on the field
14:17 and people think it's so bad, man,
14:20 there's a lot of great things that's going on
14:22 in this building right here, a lot.
14:24 And so I can see what's about to happen.
14:27 And I think, so for me, I continue to learn and grow
14:32 and look forward to what's going to happen, I think.
14:36 You know, so I think more than anything
14:39 it's just the fact that, man, you keep getting kicked down,
14:42 but we're going to keep getting up.
14:44 And that's what we're trying to teach our kids.
