00:02 the death of Maali Angkai was announced to be an elephant here in Manila Zoo.

00:07 At 3 p.m. yesterday, this Asian female elephant was born,

00:11 whose full name is Vishwa Maali,

00:13 who was born in Sri Lanka in 1974.

00:16 Here is the statement of Manila Mayor, Hanila Cunha.

00:19 I am saddened to inform you

00:25 that the birth of our beloved Vishwa Maali,

00:30 whose full name is Maali,

00:32 was announced here in Manila Zoo

00:35 at 3.45 p.m. today, November 28.

00:41 In 1977, she was brought here to the Philippines as a gift from Sri Lanka

00:49 to the former First Lady, Melda Marcos, Maali.

00:51 She was also brought to Thailand because of the health concerns of animal rights groups

00:56 that they considered the loneliest elephant in the world.

00:59 But according to experts, she is very healthy and has a bit of weight

01:03 because for an elephant, her cage is very small.

01:06 To this day, the cause of her death is unknown.

01:09 Usually, Asian elephants reach 80 years old when they are under captivity

01:14 and 60 years for wild elephants.

01:17 So even though Maali is a full adult,

01:18 she is not yet considered old,

01:20 so it is important to know the cause of her death.
