00:00 Jalen Brown's playmaking.
00:02 It hasn't been there all the time,
00:04 but when it does, when it is there, it's promising.
00:08 And it's clearly something he's putting emphasis on.
00:12 It's something the coaching staff is working on with him.
00:14 They're empowering him to run the offense at times,
00:18 including when Tatum was out.
00:19 I thought the end of the third quarter against--
00:25 who the heck do they play?
00:26 I'm losing.
00:26 I need--
00:27 Atlanta?
00:27 Against Atlanta.
00:29 There you go.
00:30 The lead is cut to six.
00:32 Tatum gets subbed out, and they ask Jalen to run the offense.
00:37 And he makes smart play after smart play
00:39 to push the lead back up to make that game comfortable.
00:43 And they not ran away with the win,
00:46 but they were never in real danger after that.
00:49 And I just feel like as long as he's
00:51 willing to get off the ball quickly,
00:54 and as long as he continues to try to make the right play,
01:00 then that's going to pay dividends.
01:02 It doesn't matter that sometimes he'll throw the ball away.
01:05 Sometimes he'll drive into traffic.
01:06 He had one play against Atlanta where he drove into the paint
01:10 and just jumped and just did something stupid.
01:14 And that'll happen sometimes.
01:16 But you can tell that he's not judging himself
01:18 by his scoring anymore from the stuff that he said,
01:21 from the way he's playing.
01:22 And that's huge.
01:24 That's a good step for him.
01:26 And maybe it seems like we're grading him on a curve,
01:29 but I think he deserves to get graded on a curve here.
01:31 He's not a great playmaker.
01:33 He has not been the best decision maker.
01:35 And for him to show signs of that,
01:37 and Christophs Porzingis being next to him
01:39 seems to help Jalen along with that.
01:44 But I just think over the long run and in the playoffs,
01:49 Jalen being able to diagnose a defense
01:51 and make the right play is just maybe the most
01:54 important thing for this team.
01:56 He and Tatum just have to be better deep in the playoffs.
02:00 They need to be great deep in the playoffs.
02:03 Jalen wasn't great against Miami at all.
02:05 The year before that, Tatum wasn't great at all
02:07 against Golden State.
02:08 And that's why they lost.
02:09 And so at the end of the day, you
02:12 need your two best players to be great.
02:15 And Jalen learning how to read defenses
02:17 and doing a better job of that is
02:19 one of the most important things for this team all season.
02:22 Yeah, the buy-in from Jalen on that front is huge.
02:26 And the fact that this is an A to green grind
02:30 to kind of whiff a couple of key new teammates
02:33 that expect to have the ball in their hands a lot too
02:36 and Drew Holiday and Porzingis.
02:37 So the fact that he's buying into that part of it--
02:42 and he should.
02:42 I mean, it's obviously a big sacrifice for him
02:45 because you're not going to post probably the all NBA numbers
02:49 or even the All-Star numbers necessarily this year
02:51 in that type of role from a points perspective
02:53 and a shot attempt perspective.
02:55 But I feel like that's the last thing that defenses
03:00 around the league will have to throw at the Celtics
03:04 when playoff comes around.
03:05 Hey, can we get Jalen and Jason to make those mistakes?
03:08 You've heard of Jalen the last couple of postseason
03:09 in those key spots.
03:10 And if they get better at that awareness,
03:13 finding those outlets, judging when to attack,
03:15 when to pull back, when to make the pass before you get
03:18 too deep into the paint and get into too much trouble there,
03:21 that is something that is going to be
03:22 the difference between probably a conference finals
03:25 run and maybe a banner.
03:26 So the fact he's working on that so much this early in the year,
03:30 I think, bodes well in terms of where he could be
03:32 on that front in April and May.

03:51 When Tatum's on the bench, who do you think
03:55 should be running the offense?
03:57 Like, what do you think is the ideal kind of system
03:59 for the Celtics?
04:00 Say Tatum's on the bench.
04:01 Last night against the Hawks, we saw they kind of
04:04 went to Jalen Brown, and he made a number of good plays,
04:08 which the great J King broke down for the video
04:10 last night on the Patreon.
04:11 Everyone should go subscribe.
04:13 But what do you think the best option is?
04:16 Because we've seen some moments of just like, OK,
04:17 Derek White's going to kind of take over this game,
04:20 just like kind of going to his right
04:22 and playing in the pick and roll.
04:23 We've seen Drew Holliday do some things.
04:25 I don't know if I necessarily want the ball in Drew Holliday's
04:28 hands consistently, just as a decision maker.
04:31 But I think if this team is to reach its highest potential,
04:35 highest ceiling, if Jalen can be a kind of a go-to guy
04:39 in those moments as a playmaker, just
04:42 because he is such a dynamic scorer and just his ability
04:45 to hit tough two-point shots, they're not necessarily
04:49 the most efficient.
04:49 But I think in the playoffs, you kind of
04:51 need guys who can go and create their own shot like that.
04:55 And just because he is that dangerous,
04:57 I feel like if he can also add that playmaking
05:00 part to his game, that solves a lot of their issues of just
05:04 like what the offense looks like when Tatum goes to the bench.
05:07 So I'm curious from, I guess, Jay, your perspective.
05:11 Jason Tatum heads to the bench.
05:12 Who do you think should have the ball
05:13 on their hands at that point?
05:15 I would like to see Derek White with the ball
05:17 in his hands a lot.
05:18 I would like to see Porzingis with the ball
05:20 in his hands a lot.
05:22 But you know what?
05:24 Long term, and Drew Holliday probably needs more usage.
05:27 Like, his usage rate has gone, just plummeted
05:29 from when he was in Milwaukee.
05:31 I don't think it'll be an issue.
05:32 He's not the type of guy to make it an issue.
05:35 But there's a stark difference between the way
05:37 he's being used now and the way he was on the Bucs.
05:40 Long term, though, whatever struggles
05:44 you have right now with Jalen having the ball in his hands,
05:49 it's going to pay off.
05:50 It's going to pay off because that's
05:53 what you need for him to develop at the end of the day.
05:57 Like, can he run your offense when Tatum is sitting?
05:59 Can he be-- can he make the right decisions
06:03 when a team double teams him or sends a ton of help,
06:06 is super aggressive against him, trying
06:09 to pick his dribble and all that,
06:11 like the Miami Heat do to muck it up?
06:14 Can he handle all of that?
06:16 And at the end of the day, he needs to be able to handle
06:18 all of that.
06:19 So I'm all for Jalen getting reps
06:22 and all for the way the coaching staff has empowered him
06:26 and run the offense through him in those times.
06:29 I think it's right for him to want to add that to his game.
06:34 And if he does, and if he gets good enough at it,
06:38 then that's the type of development
06:39 that could really matter.
06:40 So at the end of the day, you can run more
06:43 through Derek White.
06:43 You can run more through Porzangis.
06:45 You can run more through Drew Holiday.
06:46 But I think you know what you have there.
06:49 Whereas for Jalen, some of this is new.
06:51 And he just needs work at it.
06:56 Yeah, if you're going trust rankings on that front, Jim,
06:58 I'd go Tatum, White, Drew, and pretty good guy can Jalen.
07:04 So I think the key to this season now is for Jalen
07:06 to kind of close that gap a little bit.
07:07 And he won't be-- obviously, he's never
07:08 going to be a true point guard like Drew,
07:12 but at least be someone that you can have run bench
07:17 offense for six minutes and just go through the right process.
07:22 You're not going to be perfect, obviously, but know--
07:25 improve your reads, know what's coming, know who to look for.
07:29 And then that will just make defending this team just
07:32 much tougher because if Tatum-- when they're all in together
07:34 and Tatum's off the ball, you're not
07:36 going to get a help defender coming off of Tatum.
07:38 You're not going to get a help defender coming off as much
07:41 as Prozingis if he's hot.
07:42 And then things get a lot easier for Jalen and company
07:45 to attack.
07:45 And I think it's really promising
07:47 that he believes he's playing some of the best
07:51 basketball of his life right now because--
07:54 You think it's his delusions or promises?
07:57 No, I'm just-- it shows the buy-in.
08:01 It shows that he's not just not worried about his points
08:05 per game dipping considerably from last season
08:08 when he was second team All-NBA.
08:11 When you're that good, when you reach that level,
08:13 you can easily look at it and think, why do I need to change?
08:16 What do I need to change after I was literally
08:19 second team All-NBA?
08:20 They voted me one of the 10 best players in the NBA last year.
08:24 And instead, he's looking at it like, what else
08:26 can I do to help the team?
08:28 And what else can I add to my game that helps us get buckets,
08:33 not necessarily me?
08:34 So to me, the way that he's viewing it is really important
08:38 and shows that he's put faith in the coaching staff and all
08:43 their teachings that it's not going to be about points this
08:45 year for each individual player.
08:47 Sometimes it's like, can you get off the ball
08:49 and throw a pass to Derek White on the other side
08:53 so that he can then find Chris "Sapsport" Zingas cutting
08:56 to the basket or whatever it is?
08:58 Just make the play that helps the next play
09:01 and helps the offense, and the fact that he's
09:04 bought into that is big.
09:06 It is.
