00:00 Senator Riza Ontiveros signed the resolution to urge the government to assist in the investigation of the International Criminal Court in the drug war of the previous administration.
00:10 Senator President Migs Zubiri, who depends on President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and not the senator, is clear about the return of the Philippines to the ICC.
00:19 Daniel Manalas Taza reports.
00:25 A resolution was also pushed by some senators urging the government to assist in the investigation of the International Criminal Court,
00:34 the possible target being the drug war of the previous administration.
00:39 The resolution will have as fair a chance as any other, I suppose, because the Senate is a deliberative body.
00:47 I think the tradition and image of the Senate is alive and well in our hearts when it comes to talking to international bodies and our country's treaty commitments.
00:59 Senator Bato de la Rosa, who was the former chief of the Philippine National Police during the previous administration and one of the leaders in the war on drugs,
01:08 admitted that he has a bad feeling about his fellow law enforcement officers, who also admitted that he is close to the issue.
01:15 I'm very close to her husband. Even us, we're close. I'm expecting it, knowing her. I'm expecting it.
01:27 But even if I'm expecting it, I still have a bad feeling.
01:31 Senator Bato de la Rosa also raised the question of why the foreign countries should be allowed to enter the Philippines even though the justice system is working.
01:42 Let's not make a fuss here. I'll ask you, do you believe that the justice system in the Philippines is not working?
01:49 Then why did you file a resolution that they can enter the Philippines even though we're allowed to enter the Philippines?
01:55 We have a criminal justice system in the Philippines. They should file a case against any court in the Philippines.
02:04 They should. They know that they're doing things without a leg to stand on, their accusations.
02:18 They know that the local courts won't entertain them. That's why they're doing propaganda in the ICC.
02:28 So even if our judicial system is working, it's fair to say that it still needs to help it with support from the international community,
02:41 from an important international institution like the ICC, in addition to our treaty obligation, the Rome Statute.
02:52 De la Rosa and Jontiveros were on the spot when they talked on the plenary. Jontiveros approached the lawyer.
02:59 Are you going to talk to Senator Isabel?
03:02 No. No. I have a bad feeling. That's all. But I don't need to talk to her.
03:09 Senator Bato got Senator Aimee Marcos' side, who said that the Executive should have a pass to talk to the ICC.
03:19 And if the resolution is passed to her committee, according to the senator, she won't listen to it.
03:26 This is really a mess. So they're really looking for trouble. But President Duterte has said repeatedly, "Bring it on."
03:37 For me, this is a true decision of the Executive. Our co-chairman repeatedly said that the ICC won't let me in. I agree with that.
03:49 Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri said that the ICC can bring him back or keep him as a member,
03:55 but this is not the decision that the senators and the President of his country made as the chief of our foreign policy.
04:05 Others will just remain silent. And President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. still has the ball and will pass the issue.
04:14 Daniel Manalastas for the Morning Show ng Bayan, Rise and Shine, Philippines.
