00:00 After the fire, the local government of Manila will write a letter to remind the people of Sri Lanka
00:08 that they will donate elephants to the Manila Zoo.
00:11 But an animal rights group will follow.
00:14 Watch this, Oscar Oida.
00:16 This video was taken on Monday, a day before the fire,
00:24 the elephants in Manila Zoo were being separated.
00:27 (Indistinct chatter)
00:32 Mali was eating at that time, but it was noticed that it was hard for her to chew the leaves.
00:39 She squeezed it several times and tried to eat it.
00:43 According to the uploader of the video, she noticed that the elephant was weak.
00:50 According to the chief veterinarian of Manila Zoo,
00:53 congenital heart failure is the cause of death of Mali.
00:59 We gave her emergency drugs such as antihistamines because we saw that she was having a hard time breathing.
01:09 We also gave her vitamin supplements to make her stronger.
01:14 Around 3.45, she was already having a hard time and she died.
01:21 It was so painful to lose your pet.
01:26 I couldn't take it anymore.
01:29 It became a family life.
01:31 In the necropsy done to Mali, it was discovered that she had cancer.
01:37 The first thing that came to our attention was the pancreas.
01:39 Neoplastic, meaning it was hard and it looked like she had cancer.
01:48 We saw the aorta, the tube outside her heart.
01:54 It had a thick fat that was buried there.
01:59 It could be the cause of her death, the congestive heart failure.
02:05 Manila Zoo admitted that they found out that Mali had cancer after the necropsy.
02:11 But they were brave.
02:13 The check-ups of the animals were regular in their power.
02:16 She might have felt something in her body but we couldn't see it.
02:23 Animals are not like humans that you can ask or talk to.
02:28 Mali was 43 years old when she died.
02:32 She was brought to the Philippines in 1981 as a gift from Sri Lanka to the former First Lady Imelda Marcos.
02:39 She had a partner, Shiva, who died first in 1990.
02:44 The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, was angry and dismayed at Mali's death.
02:52 In 2010, Manila Zoo decided to return Mali to her natural habitat.
02:59 Our recommendation was to move her to a sanctuary in Northern Thailand.
03:04 This move, moving her to Mali, was not something that was done easily.
03:08 We also had experts who talked to us about this.
03:12 But they did not give Mali a chance.
03:16 She has been in a captive state for a long time.
03:19 She can no longer go out.
03:23 We don't know what will happen to her when she is brought back and if she can adapt to the new environment.
03:32 The Manila LGU is now thinking about how to preserve Mali's limbs
03:37 so that she can continue to be recognized by visitors to the Manila Zoo.
03:42 Mayor Lacuña will also write to the government of Sri Lanka
03:46 to remind them of the promise that she will donate elephants to the Manila Zoo.
03:52 We will communicate with them to inform them that Mali is no longer with us
04:00 and for their offer to us to push through.
04:05 Why would we bring her back so that the same thing will happen to her like what happened to Mali?
04:10 For GMA Integrated News, Oscar Oidang, your witness.
