It’s the Christmas single from West Sussex four-piece Doctor Gonzo, very much redone in Doctor Gonzo’s pop-punk style.

00:00 Good afternoon, my name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Editor with Sussex Newspaper. It's lovely
00:06 this afternoon to speak to Ash Miles of the band Dr Gonzo, a four-piece which comprises
00:11 members from Crawley, Worthing and East Grinstead. Now Ash, you have - it's a fabulous Christmas
00:17 single out, I heard it, loved it instantly. You have done something rather striking with
00:24 East 17's Stay Another Day. What have you done? Well, I mean, first of all, thanks for
00:30 having me, Phil, it's nice to meet you. Stay Another Day, for us, has always been a great
00:37 Christmas song. It's one you hear every year without fail and, you know, watching the video
00:44 on YouTube and stuff is always really good. But it is very dated. There is a but, yeah,
00:52 always a but. It's very dated. It's long overdue, a bit of a freshen up and hopefully we feel
01:00 like we've done it justice. We've added our own spin of pop punk and humour to it as well.
01:06 You say freshen up, what do you mean by freshen up? A freshen up, I mean, if you look at the
01:14 video, which I'm sure you already have, of the song, it's very stereotypical 90s, early
01:22 2000s, everybody's in big white fluffy coats. And when you look at it now, you almost think
01:28 to yourself, wow, that was a long time ago when everybody looked quite silly. So we wanted
01:32 to do the same thing. We wanted to look quite silly. And I'm sure if you've watched our
01:37 video of the song, we've done that pretty well. We were pretty silly there and we had
01:41 a great time recording the video. It was kind of asked to be a little bit of Mickey taking,
01:47 but respectfully, nicely done. I think that's exactly it. Yeah. Respectful Mickey taking
01:53 or making light of is what we might call it. But yeah, it was really good fun to do. And
02:02 it's a fantastic song originally. And hopefully we've done it a bit of justice with a refresh
02:07 and a bit of our own pop. You've heard the original for me, I tell you. Great. Good.
02:16 Where can people hear your version? Yeah, so it is on pretty much all of the platforms.
02:22 I think I know it's definitely on Spotify, YouTube Music, Deezer and all of those other
02:28 music streaming platforms. The video is on YouTube if you wanted to see that. And it's
02:34 also on the Dr Gonzo Facebook page. Yeah. And a lovely way for you to finish the year.
02:39 What are the plans for Dr Gonzo for next year then? So next year, we are definitely going
02:44 to be writing and recording and releasing new music as well as probably videos as well.
02:50 And we might even come up with a new spin off or take on another Christmas song and
02:57 put our own little spin on it. There are so many candidates. There really are. There really
03:02 are. Fantastic. Really lovely speech. Good luck with everything. And yeah, I love that
03:07 Christmas single. Thanks very much.
