00:11 Welcome to The Verdict on the Street,
00:13 the show that listens to its audience.
00:17 We're going to take some of the hottest topics
00:19 out onto the streets of Britain to ask you
00:21 what you think of them.
00:24 In a world that seems full of experts,
00:26 sometimes it's the opinions of the people on the street
00:29 that really matter.
00:30 So, great British public, it's over to you.
00:34 We send our reporters out into a number of cities across the UK,
00:38 armed only with a camera and a microphone
00:40 to ask simply, what do you think?
00:42 On this week's agenda, we're asking,
00:49 Prince Harry was allegedly branded a fool by his father.
00:52 Was the king right?
00:55 Have acts like Madonna and Oasis still got it?
00:59 And will you be buying Christmas presents for your pets
01:01 this year?
01:02 So we start with the news that a new book has claimed
01:08 that King Charles branded his son Harry
01:10 as a fool after his and Meghan's explosive Netflix documentary.
01:15 The king was far from happy following
01:16 the release of the documentary, according
01:18 to author Omid Scobie, a firm friend of the couple.
01:22 The revelation came in Mr. Scobie's latest book,
01:25 Endgame, Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy's
01:27 Fight for Survival, which also claims
01:30 that there was a second royal racist who
01:32 raised concerns about Archie's skin colour
01:34 and that Meghan and Kate had not spoken in four years.
01:38 The six-episode docuseries was released in December 2022
01:42 with the couple discussing Mexit, racism,
01:45 and their new life in California in the opening episodes.
01:49 But should they have done it?
01:51 And should they have just led the quiet life
01:52 they craved in America?
01:54 Or do you think Harry's a fool?
01:56 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:59 Do you think Harry is a fool?
02:02 Yes, definitely.
02:05 I can't believe he's done what he did,
02:08 and especially to the queen.
02:10 And she'd be turning in the grave.
02:12 I think, yeah, that's bad what he did.
02:14 Do you think Harry is a fool?
02:16 No, I don't.
02:16 I love Harry.
02:18 Really love him.
02:19 No.
02:20 I'm both just both.
02:21 I love him.
02:21 No.
02:22 I'm not going to criticise the royal family
02:24 about their personal views, because every family does
02:27 have upsets and arguments.
02:30 So I think it would be unfair, really,
02:32 to comment on the royal family on that issue, really.
02:35 Royal author Omid Scobie's new book, Endgame,
02:38 claims the future of the British monarchy
02:40 is in a fight for survival, with the controversial new book
02:43 reporting several scandalous allegations
02:45 about the royal family.
02:47 Scobie claims the Princess of Wales
02:49 ignored Meghan's cries for help and can be cold,
02:52 and alleges King Charles is still
02:54 dealing with the fallout from his inability
02:56 to convene and command his own family in the wake of Harry
02:59 and Meghan leaving their royal duties behind.
03:02 The King is even said to have called his youngest son a fool
03:05 after the airing of the couple's Netflix show.
03:07 But what do you think?
03:08 Everything that they do is just for the public eye,
03:11 and it's just boring.
03:12 It's just like, if you want to not be in the public eye,
03:15 don't be in the public eye.
03:16 Just go away.
03:16 I think they make a lot of money from the press and just
03:22 the drama of it, I think.
03:25 I think that's kind of the point, partly.
03:28 But yeah.
03:29 I'd like to think that the relationship between Prince
03:32 Charles and Prince Harry is not damaged forever,
03:34 because family is so important, and that's
03:37 all we have in life, family and friends and a bit of love.
03:40 So I really hope they will mend it.
03:43 However, I think Harry was unwise,
03:46 and nobody really likes to know all the dirt.
03:51 And I do think perhaps some of it
03:53 was a bit exaggerated from his point of view.
03:55 I don't know that he's a fool.
03:59 I just don't understand the way he is with his family.
04:04 I'm sure if they'd both stayed here,
04:06 there's a lot they could have done, a lot of causes
04:08 that they could have done between him and Meghan,
04:10 because they were quite popular.
04:11 And I think there's a lot of things that they could have
04:13 helped the country with.
04:15 The King's the fool for even thinking about that.
04:19 Because when the Queen was still alive,
04:23 she never did nothing to the princes.
04:26 Because he's in charge now, he can say what he wants
04:30 and do what he wants.
04:31 Well, I always found him pretty good, Harry.
04:34 Now with her, I'm not sure.
04:37 But for the royal family in general,
04:39 I mean, they've always been the people that most British people
04:44 look up to, you know.
04:45 So I think Harry has been very unwise is a good way
04:49 to put it, yeah.
04:50 He's done some very foolish things.
04:53 I mean, hopefully the family can be forgiven.
04:58 The Pimbers.
04:59 Next, some of the older bands from the 80s
05:07 are making comebacks and embarking on brand new tours.
05:10 65-years-young Madonna kicked off her celebration tour
05:13 in October, declaring, "It's good to have me back, right?"
05:17 And Liam Gallagher has announced a 30th anniversary
05:20 Definitely Maybe tour, even though it's not the Oasis
05:23 reunion fans might have hoped for.
05:25 But the question is, have they still got it?
05:27 Do artists like Madonna and Oasis still have it?
05:33 Would you go and see them if they did comeback tours?
05:36 Yes, I would.
05:37 Yes, definitely would.
05:39 Yes.
05:39 Is there like a particular artist
05:41 that you would love to see kind of come back and do a tour?
05:45 No, no, no, there isn't.
05:46 But once the stadium's built in Bristol,
05:49 it'd be easier to see some of the bigger bands.
05:51 I would certainly go and see Madonna,
05:53 just out of curiosity.
05:55 I was a big fan of her earlier work,
05:57 not so much her recent work.
05:58 Oasis, a load of her passion.
06:02 Never a fan.
06:04 They were out at a time when it was a kind of lad rock,
06:07 and that was kind of the antithesis of everything
06:10 that I liked at the time.
06:11 So no, not even if we were giving tickets away for Oasis
06:14 would I go and see them.
06:15 Well, if Mick Jagger can do it at his age,
06:19 then surely she can as well.
06:22 I think for someone like her who's
06:27 been doing it for as long as she has,
06:29 that passion and that desire to perform,
06:33 I don't think it ever goes away, no matter how old you are.
06:36 There's loads of greats, Bob Dylan, Keith Richards, Mick
06:40 Jagger, they're all-- they can do it.
06:43 I have a feeling that they might die on the stage.
06:46 They're going to do it forever.
06:47 I love Oasis.
06:48 I'd definitely see them any time of the day.
06:51 Madonna, I've never been a big fan,
06:52 but I was watching her on the news this morning.
06:54 She's like 65 or something.
06:55 If she's still got it, let her do it.
06:58 But I like Spice Girls.
06:59 I'm from the '90s, so I like Spice Girls, Busted,
07:01 stuff like that.
07:02 They all need to come back, all the '90s stuff.
07:05 Well, some have, and some haven't,
07:07 which I think they should retire,
07:09 because I'm hating myself.
07:10 And I think when I say, oh, goodness me,
07:13 the outfits, but really, they are doing well.
07:16 I did watch Elton John at Glastonbury,
07:19 and I keep watching the last 10 minutes when he sang "Rocketman."
07:24 It's on BBC iPlayer.
07:26 I just cannot stop watching it every night.
07:28 I mean, he is a legend, and it's one
07:31 of the most beautiful moments I've ever seen in my life.
07:34 Actually, when I was a kid, I went to see Madonna,
07:37 because we share a birthday.
07:38 And I remember being really tired.
07:41 And I pretty much stayed for the first two songs,
07:44 then we decided to leave.
07:45 But as of that, I don't really know any old,
07:48 too many of the older early 2000s artists, unless it's R&B.
07:53 She's probably done everything already.
07:55 She should be happily retiring and taking it easy.
07:59 But look, she keeps going.
08:00 So I think it's uplifting.
08:02 It's energizing.
08:03 And I think it's cool.
08:05 So I would 100%--
08:07 for example, Lady Gaga.
08:09 She's one of my favorites.
08:11 I always listen to her.
08:13 I would 100% go to one of her concerts.
08:16 Do you know what?
08:17 I'm going to really show my age here and say 10 CC.
08:20 I loved 10 CC, all that era, Genesis, and Yes,
08:25 and that type of thing.
08:26 But yeah, anyone from back there to remind me of my misspent
08:32 youth.
08:33 [LAUGHS]
08:36 Now, our pets are part of the family, right?
08:39 But according to a new survey, one in five Brits
08:42 are set to spend more on their pets
08:43 this Christmas than their partners or children.
08:46 Are you?
08:46 What do you think about pets getting Christmas presents
08:53 or advent calendars?
08:55 We get our more, see a little something.
08:57 But it's usually just a little treat.
08:59 It's not an overboard.
09:00 No one spends thousands on it or not.
09:03 Little five pound token.
09:04 [LAUGHS]
09:05 Token of your appreciation.
09:06 Yeah.
09:07 Not me.
09:09 Actually, but when my daughter lived with it
09:11 quite a long time ago, nearly 20 years ago or so,
09:14 we had two cats.
09:15 And at Christmas, she bought them some cat treats.
09:19 Pet?
09:21 No.
09:22 I don't agree with all that.
09:24 But then again, I don't have a pet, so I wouldn't know.
09:26 Some people, it's a member of the family.
09:30 So I can't really have an opinion on that.
09:32 What other people do is entirely up to themselves.
09:35 But me personally, I wouldn't have pet presents even
09:39 if I had a pet.
09:41 There are around 17 million households in the UK with pets
09:44 since the pet baby boom we experienced during the pandemic
09:47 helped to boost the number.
09:49 And it seems despite the cost of living crisis,
09:51 we're not being put off spending on our furry friends,
09:54 especially over the festive period.
09:57 According to a study from Pets at Home, a quarter of owners
10:00 will be spending just as much on the animal
10:02 members of their household as their human counterparts.
10:07 Yes, they're part of people's family.
10:08 Yeah.
10:09 Yeah.
10:09 Ours have Christmas jumpers, and we'll be getting a stocking,
10:12 albeit full of sweets and biscuits,
10:14 but they will be getting presents.
10:16 Yeah.
10:16 I mean, it's a bit OTT, but yeah, I think it's--
10:18 They only think it's another day,
10:20 but they get lots of sweets that day.
10:21 And why not, yeah.
10:22 Just like a child.
10:23 It's another day, you get lots of sweets
10:25 till they realise it's Christmas and Santa's coming.
10:27 I think it's the feel good factor.
10:29 Because you're giving something, even though it's
10:31 to a creature who doesn't understand.
10:34 Yeah, but they do understand love and affection, don't they?
10:37 Exactly.
10:38 And I think you just feel better that you've
10:40 included your pet because it's part of the family.
10:43 I think it's brilliant.
10:44 You know, they're like your baby, they're like your child.
10:47 I mean, I've got a son, and the dog, he's just like a child.
10:51 He gets everything.
10:52 I mean, he gets Christmas presents, he gets sweeties,
10:55 he gets the lot.
10:56 What my son would get, my dog gets.
10:59 So you've said you do all that.
11:00 What do you think is the perfect pet present?
11:04 Sort of like, you know, something to wear,
11:06 something to eat.
11:07 Do you know what?
11:08 No, it gets on people's nerves.
11:09 And I know when you buy a dog this, they always say,
11:12 oh, my, you bought squeaky toys.
11:14 The dogs love it.
11:15 I've even actually had a bazooka, which fires tennis balls.
11:20 So what can the pups and moggies of our nation
11:23 be expecting to unwrap this December?
11:25 A quarter of owners plan to get their pets a Christmas jumper.
11:28 Just over 50% will be treated to a Christmas dinner,
11:31 and half will even get their own stocking.
11:34 I have a black Bombay cat called Elga.
11:37 Love her to bits.
11:37 And she will be getting spoiled at Christmas,
11:39 just like my two children and their children,
11:42 my grandchildren.
11:44 Christmas is a time to celebrate, not just for humans,
11:47 for pets as well.
11:48 They're all God's creatures, so are we.
