00:00 On World AIDS Day, experts reminded us of the importance of HIV and testing.
00:07 Even the ex-Miss Universe of the country joined the campaign,
00:11 especially half of the new HIV infections in the country are between 15 and 24 years old.
00:17 Tina Panganibat Perez and Dano Tingcungu were among the participants.
00:21 According to the group TLF Share from the Department of Health,
00:28 almost 118,000 people in the Philippines were diagnosed with HIV from January 1984 to June 2023.
00:36 The number of HIV infections in the Philippines increased by 418% every year from 2010 to 2022.
00:44 Almost half of the new HIV infections are between 15 and 24 years old.
00:49 Our reality is that HIV prevention progress for Asia Pacific has virtually stopped.
00:55 Since 2010, there has been just a 14% reduction for the region as a whole.
01:00 In places with rising epidemics, as you can see in the red,
01:04 we need an urgent focus on concrete population-specific interventions led by the communities themselves.
01:12 To encourage more people to get tested, the group Love Yourself launched the campaign #WhatWorksForYou
01:20 led by Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach and Catriona Gray.
01:24 There is a medication where your viral load is so low that it can't be detected and you can't pass it.
01:33 You're like a normal healthy person as long as you're continuous with your medication.
01:39 It also affects other communities and other individuals too.
01:42 So we don't want to push the messaging that it's really just affecting these people.
01:46 It can affect all of us.
01:48 This individual got an HIV screening at the pop-up HIV testing site in Quezon City Hall on World AIDS Day.
01:55 It's free until December 8.
01:57 But there's always free HIV testing in different clinics in the city.
02:02 Testing is one of the things that experts are pushing to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS,
02:08 especially now that there are more people getting infected, especially in young people.
02:13 It is quite alarming because it has already penetrated the 15-year-old bracket
02:17 and we don't want that to expand more and reach the younger ones.
02:25 The primary way to spread the disease is through sexual transmission
02:29 which has become easier now because of dating apps or dating sites.
02:33 But the bigger reason is the lack of knowledge.
02:37 Only 31% of our children aged 15 to 17 years old know what HIV is and how to prevent it.
02:46 To give information to young people about HIV,
02:50 the Quezon City Local Government will issue a manual to high schools that are being run by the city.
02:57 It is also stated in the manual that there is a law that says that
03:01 15 to 18-year-olds can get HIV tests even without parental consent.
03:06 There's nothing wrong with getting tested.
03:08 It's better to get tested earlier so that we can solve their infection.
03:16 We have to start by educating our school children.
