00:00 Hi everybody, this is Hondo Carpenter from Sports Illustrated's Fannation Las Vegas Raiders
00:07 Insider Podcast.
00:09 Joined by my good friend, I am of course your Raiders beat writer.
00:12 This is our assistant beat writer, the great Zeke Trezevant.
00:15 Boy, we got a lot to talk about.
00:17 Zeke, yesterday my article dropped and we got into the 10 biggest disagreements and
00:26 there was more, but 10 biggest between Dave Ziegler and Josh McDaniels and I know there
00:33 was a lot of people that thought, "Who cares, they're gone."
00:37 But if you don't go back and know the past, you're doomed to repeat it.
00:42 And I think it was a classic example of why I think Mark Davis needs to have a GM, let
00:49 the GM make the hire of the coach.
00:51 What'd you think of the article?
00:53 What'd you think of all of it?
00:54 Let's dig into that.
00:55 Yeah, 100%.
00:56 So in terms of the article itself, you and I have discussed, I felt like that article
01:01 was even better than the last insider article that you had dropped with a lot of tidbits
01:05 in there.
01:06 I think this article did a great job of showing the...
01:09 So basically Ziegler and Josh McDaniels were essentially tied at the hip.
01:14 I think this article did a good job at kind of separating them, if you will, now that
01:19 they're both out of the door.
01:20 So I think with the specifics that we're giving in the article, it's not hard to see that,
01:26 hey, one person had a little bit better of an idea of what was going on than the other.
01:30 But I also think that that situation in general does say that, hey, you got to get you a GM
01:35 that is independent of the head coach.
01:38 And I think the article itself did a good job of painting that picture.
01:42 I've been told by several people, I would never hire an offensive coach because they
01:48 always think, let's just spend more money on offense and outscore people.
01:52 You need balance.
01:54 And to me, what impressed me about...
01:59 Impressed me is probably not the right word, but what I noticed most about Dave and Josh
02:04 was that Dave had more understanding about, he looked down the road, let's think about
02:13 tomorrow.
02:14 Let's not just worry about today.
02:16 I mean, when you looked at him wanting to go for Jacoby Brissett and then wanting to
02:22 keep Jarrett Stidham and then go after CJ Stroud, how different would this team look
02:27 today?
02:28 Very much.
02:29 It was just fascinating.
02:30 Fascinating to me.
02:31 Of the 10...
02:32 I'm sorry, please, go ahead.
02:33 No, no, of the 10, I'm listening.
02:34 The 10 disagreements, what one stood out to you most?
02:42 I think the one that you actually brought up in terms of the three different quarterbacks,
02:46 that to me, just simply because Josh beat the table so hard for Garoppolo, that's like
02:52 got to me more than anything.
02:55 You can be wrong, but you can't be that wrong on everything.
02:59 I would also say the fact that just in a very general sense, it seemed like Dave, he was
03:04 able to make decisions or make suggestions independent of necessarily personal beliefs.
03:11 It seemed like he had a very even keeled, no bias, no ties, no strings attached, look
03:16 at everything, whether it was personnel moves, whether it was money that was being spent,
03:20 whatever it may be, it seemed like he always had a pretty level and even keeled approach
03:24 to things.
03:25 Not to say that Dave was never wrong, but in terms of those 10, 11 specific things,
03:30 it seemed like he always was the more level headed of the two.
03:32 All right.
03:33 I want to switch now because we talked about, I wrote the article, even though they are
03:37 gone so that people can have an understanding of why things need to be different.
03:43 For example, John Gruden wanted Damon Arnett.
03:50 Anyone from Big Ten country, which I came from covering four years ago, knew Damon Arnett.
03:59 No bueno, not good.
04:03 I knew several, several NFL executives that the moment the Raiders picked them, well,
04:13 there you go.
04:15 Welcome to the Raiders.
04:16 I mean, several, my friends.
04:19 I know of, I'm going to guess probably close to 10 teams in which Damon Arnett was not
04:26 even on their board, which meant if he went undrafted, they wouldn't have even signed
04:30 him.
04:31 Mayock was not a big Arnett guy, but Gruden wanted him.
04:38 I just think, listen, and I love John Gruden.
04:40 This is not a slam on John Gruden, but I just think it's a classic example where a coach
04:48 looks at things and sees things.
04:53 It's like as a hunter, being in the middle of the woods, I can tell you what the trees
04:58 around me look like, but not all the trees.
05:00 But a guy in a helicopter can tell you about all the trees.
05:03 I just think you need that general manager who has final authority.
05:08 Agree or disagree?
05:09 Agreed.
05:10 And again, to that point, and I firmly believe this, right?
05:13 I firmly believe the GM has to have that autonomy almost to make that decision.
05:18 Obviously, owner plays a part in it.
05:19 Obviously, head coach plays a part in it, but he has to be able to make that decision
05:23 confident that neither one of those other two people are going to overrule him.
05:26 Because then at that point, it's kind of like, why do you even have a GM?
05:29 That's literally the GM's job.
05:31 So I think to that point and to the point that you made earlier in terms of, hey, you
05:35 look at the last head coach and GM and then the coach and GM before that, it's almost
05:40 like a soap opera.
05:41 You have to know what happened the seasons before or else what's happening now and what's
05:44 about to happen won't make sense.
05:46 So I think the article did a great job at covering that.
05:50 And I also think it points to just how important this place that the Raiders find themselves
05:55 in it is.
05:56 So after the season, whatever decision they make at GM or head coach, this is a huge,
06:01 huge time in Raider land right now coming up.
06:05 All right.
06:06 Now, on Wednesday, I wrote an article about Mark Davis facing a legacy defining decision.
06:14 And I think this next one is for a lot of reasons.
06:18 We know he's a superior businessman to his father.
06:22 That's not even a question, but he's not the football guy.
06:26 The last two coaching changes gave the power to the coach.
06:33 It's going to be, who's he listening to?
06:36 It's going to be all of those things.
06:38 I mean, clearly he's not getting younger.
06:42 And so to me, I think this next hire is going to be a legacy defining decision by him.
06:48 Do you think, because you're younger than me, do you think I overstated it?
06:53 No, not at all.
06:56 You got to think, you know, if you go and when I say you, I mean, Mark Davis, if he
06:59 goes, you know, three swings at GM coach and he fails at that point, you kind of have to
07:05 look in the mirror, right?
07:06 Then it is your decision making that you have to kind of, you know, decide what's going
07:09 on there.
07:10 I don't think you overstated it by any means.
07:13 And I think if it was a different organization than the Raiders, maybe, but since we're talking
07:18 about one of the most historical franchises in the National Football League's history,
07:22 it is a very pivotal time, no matter how you look at it.
07:25 So Mark has to be-
07:26 And remember, he's had a chance to hire more than three.
07:29 This is going to be four.
07:31 Yeah.
07:32 So Mark, he's got to hit on this one.
07:34 I feel like he knows that.
07:35 I feel like he knows that and I feel like he's ready for it.
07:37 I think the decision is going to take some time though.
07:41 I don't think it's going to be anything that comes too, too soon.
07:45 But I think when he's ready to make that decision, I think this time Mark is going to make it
07:48 and I think he's going to make the right one.
07:51 You know, I wrote on Wednesday though, it's going to be interesting.
07:54 Who is, who's he listening to?
07:57 Does he listen to Tom Brady, Jim Gray?
07:59 Does he listen to former players?
08:02 This is going to be an interesting time for him.
08:07 Very much so.
08:08 Very much so.
08:09 And like you said, you know, we know obviously he's not his father for better or for worse,
08:13 but I think that always sticks in the back of his head too, in terms of, you know, I
08:16 mean, come on, who wouldn't that be the case for?
08:18 You know, you're stepping in the shadows of a great man in terms of Al Davis.
08:21 So I think he wants to get this one right.
08:23 I think he wants to put a productive team on the field and at least, you know, give
08:27 his dads a run for his money in that area in terms of production on the football field.
08:32 Yeah, I agree with you.
08:34 All right, Zeke.
08:35 Let's look ahead.
08:37 The Raiders will be back next week.
08:41 Vikings quick turnaround, Chargers, two winnable games.
08:46 Yes.
08:47 Two winnable games.
08:50 I would go as far as saying had AP been the coach when they went to LA, they would have
08:56 beaten the Chargers.
08:58 I think the Raiders win both of these, but these are two big, big games.
09:03 You know, you got a Sunday and a Thursday.
09:06 So literally Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, within a five day span, bam, you can be back
09:12 to seven on seven.
09:13 I mean, that's big.
09:16 That's big.
09:17 Yes.
09:18 How big are these two games?
09:21 They're huge, especially with both of them coming at home.
09:24 Right.
09:25 So everything is still right there in front of them.
09:27 Right.
09:28 Obviously, they definitely need some things that happen in terms of the playoff push.
09:31 But, you know, again, nobody thought they were going to the Super Bowl to start the
09:34 year.
09:35 So at this point, you know, you just want to put your best foot forward if you're on
09:36 the team.
09:37 And I think they will.
09:38 You know, I think they're going to look at it like, hey, let's knock out these next two
09:41 at home.
09:42 Get ready, because obviously with that Thursday night game, they're going to have more time
09:45 to kind of rest and get right after that.
09:47 I think they're going to kind of, you know, get prepared and get ready to go.
09:50 So they'll win the next two if you ask me.
09:53 I think so, too.
09:54 All right.
09:55 So I'm going to ask you a question.
09:57 And obviously, there's a lot of intangibles.
10:00 I have said, and you know this, since AP got the job, he's got to go win it.
10:06 He needs to make it so difficult that there is no chance Mark Davis, regardless of who's
10:14 in his year, can walk away.
10:16 If he finishes and wins all five, which I don't think he's going to do, I think he's
10:21 going to lose to the Chiefs.
10:23 But let's say he wins all five and ends up 10 and 7.
10:27 Is he an automatic hire?
10:31 The word automatic is the only thing that's giving me pause, because you just never, obviously
10:34 you just never know.
10:35 But I think just about, yes.
10:37 If he wins the next five, including Kansas City on the road Christmas Day, yeah, I think,
10:42 I think, yeah, you got to go automatic.
10:43 Yes, sir.
10:44 I think it's automatic, because I think 10 gets him in the playoffs.
10:47 If he goes 9 and 8, which is what I think he's going to do, do you think he keeps the
10:53 job?
10:55 I think it's a little bit more of a toss up at that point.
10:58 I'm going to go here.
11:01 Yeah.
11:02 I think if he goes 9 and 8, and Mark Davis does not give him the job, I think there is
11:08 going to, and you're in the locker room with me, there's going to be a mutiny.
11:13 Yeah, yeah.
11:14 The guys love him.
11:15 And the love is real.
11:16 You're not agree with me?
11:17 Or do you think I'm overstating it?
11:19 No, I think there, there will definitely be some, some voices that will be heard, especially
11:25 from your bigger, you know, your bigger names in the locker room, for sure, especially your
11:29 Max's, you know, your, you know, some other guys as well.
11:32 So yes, 100%.
11:33 Right.
11:34 8 and 9.
11:35 Nope, I think 9 has to, I think 9 is the only thing that's going to make it a, where he
11:44 has an argument, fair or unfair.
11:46 I think 9 is going to be the only, because, and the reason I say that is, is because some
11:50 of the issues that the Raiders have are bigger than AP.
11:54 So I think that's going to play into it.
11:56 And I'm not sure that Mark doesn't want to make a, you know, a splash.
12:00 I think that's part of what's going to weigh on him too, is he wants to make a, he wants
12:03 to make a, put a big name in there, unfortunately, fortunately or unfortunately.
12:06 So, you know, it's going to be interesting.
12:10 Right.
12:12 And if he gets to 7, I don't think he gets the job if he gets to 7.
12:17 No, no, no, no.
12:19 If he gets to more than 7, I think he gets the job.
12:26 I don't think Mark will want to give it to him at 8.
12:31 But, or I don't think the people around Mark are going to want Mark.
12:37 And when I say that, I don't mean people in the building.
12:39 Yeah.
12:40 I mean people outside the building.
12:44 But I'm just telling you, he gets to 8 and they don't get it.
12:52 Yeah.
12:53 It's, I mean, after not going for Basacia, who was a much more proven coach.
13:01 Yeah.
13:02 He'd been coaching a lot longer.
13:05 But I believe, and Mark's not told me this, but I believe that Mark regrets not hiring
13:12 Basacia.
13:13 Yeah.
13:14 And you fire the last coach that you told everybody you weren't going to fire.
13:21 You owe him 45 million.
13:28 And or let's see, what would that be?
13:31 It'd be a six year deal, five.
13:34 All right.
13:36 And now you got a guy who's maybe even more popular than Basacia.
13:45 Maybe it's pretty close.
13:48 And you're going to tell these players, I'm listening to you.
13:50 I'm listening to you.
13:51 I'm listening to you.
13:53 And then turn around and fire him again.
13:55 Yeah.
13:56 I'm just telling you, I think Mark Davis has painted himself into a little bit of a corner
14:00 here.
14:01 Yeah.
14:02 He's definitely, listen, he's got a tough, some tough decisions to make coming up here
14:05 soon for a lot of different reasons.
14:09 So it's definitely going to be interesting to see what he does in terms of AP because
14:13 the guys love him and they do.
14:15 And they come out and they play for him.
14:16 Win, lose or draw, you know, they're playing their best, which you didn't necessarily know
14:20 before AP took over.
14:22 So we're going to see what Mark does.
14:26 Do you think fans have been fair with AP?
14:30 No, overall, no.
14:34 But I, you know, I'll say it again.
14:36 I've said it a couple of times, but I'll say it again.
14:37 I think it's just the day and age of instant gratification that we live in.
14:41 And I also think that fans don't fully understand, you know, I don't want to say the game, but
14:48 they don't understand everything that goes into it.
14:50 I guess I should say they don't understand that.
14:52 Hey, you can coach as hard as you want to, but the players still have to go execute.
14:56 Right.
14:57 I don't think most people understand that if a player takes a half step the wrong way
15:00 or at the wrong time, the whole play breaks down.
15:02 Right.
15:03 So I think when you take everything into consideration, they have been, you know, a
15:07 little unfair to AP and, you know, to some of the Raiders in general, you know, the players.
15:11 Yeah.
15:12 I, I, I, I throw out the extremes.
15:16 I just mute them.
15:17 Well, you know, you've been next to me.
15:19 I just mute them.
15:20 But I listen and I'll hear people say, boy, I don't think AP's ready.
15:26 He made this mistake or that mistake.
15:28 Well, that's going to happen with a first time coach.
15:32 And you know, I'm not for hiring first time coaches.
15:35 So when AP got the interim tag, I said, this is great because now he gets to learn on the
15:40 job.
15:41 It just amazes me how many, I mean, people want to say Bo Hardegre is crap.
15:47 Okay.
15:49 He got rid of a ton of a playbook that Aiden couldn't run or they didn't have the personnel.
15:56 The Raiders have found a running game.
15:59 He's trying to develop stuff.
16:01 And oh, by the way, doing it after the trade deadline, halfway through the season.
16:08 I mean, I'm just, you got to look at, you have to look at the whole picture.
16:14 You do, you do like you have to take everything like AP isn't just a new coach.
16:19 He overtook this ship halfway through the season.
16:23 And it was, it was a surprise to him.
16:25 He didn't start that.
16:26 He didn't go into the Detroit Lions game knowing, hey, in four days, I'm going to be the interim
16:29 head coach.
16:30 Right.
16:31 And it's like a whirlwind of, hey, I was a linebackers coach to now I'm a head coach
16:34 to I'm head coaching against my old team that I want to like, just imagine what the last
16:37 four weeks have been like for AP, for Bo, for Aiden.
16:41 Yeah.
16:42 It's a lot, right.
16:44 These guys go through, they're human, right.
16:46 These guys, you know, they come across like gladiators.
16:48 They strap the helmets up like AP says, and they go out there and they play superheroes.
16:52 But at the end of the day, they're humans just like we are.
16:54 And in that sense, I think some people forget that, you know, come Sundays.
16:58 Yeah, I agree.
16:59 All right.
17:00 I'm going to turn to a couple other subjects.
17:04 If Mark Davis decides, OK, I'm going to hire AP.
17:09 Doesn't he have to hire Champ Kelly?
17:14 I would think so.
17:16 I would think so.
17:17 Just for continuity sake.
17:19 You know, I don't see I don't see how you could you know, they're not necessarily as
17:23 attached at the hip as Dave and Josh were.
17:27 But, you know, considering this situation, I think you would.
17:29 Yeah.
17:30 Why would you keep AP and get rid of the guy that's helped bring in a lot of the talent,
17:34 right, or had had a hand in it?
17:36 Right.
17:37 Well, here's the problem.
17:39 If you hire AP and fire Champ, then you come in with a general manager that AP is not his
17:46 guy.
17:47 You set him up to fail.
17:48 Yeah.
17:49 Yeah.
17:50 It's it's to me, that would be counterproductive to hire AP and get rid of Champ.
17:55 I think you're kind of you're kind of I don't want to say co-signing Champ, if you will.
17:58 But if you're if you sign AP, you have to I would imagine you have to keep Champ for
18:02 sure.
18:03 All right.
18:04 I'm going to throw an idea out here.
18:06 I want you to tell me what you think.
18:09 Let's assume they get to eight or nine wins.
18:12 OK, OK.
18:13 Which I think pretty good chance they get to eight or nine.
18:17 If I'm Mark Davis.
18:19 I go to Champ Kelly and make sure.
18:21 Do you want to keep him?
18:23 Mm hmm.
18:24 OK, now I know the answer to that's going to be yes.
18:28 Great.
18:29 You're my general manager.
18:31 Great.
18:33 Hire him.
18:34 Do a press conference.
18:35 Three or four days later, you have a press conference to announce AP is the man.
18:41 And I say that you give AP this contract.
18:46 A three year deal, fully guaranteed, 100 percent.
18:51 For four million dollars a year.
18:55 But you tell him.
18:58 You get to the playoffs.
19:00 At any time during those three years.
19:04 It automatically is extended five more years.
19:10 Five more.
19:12 And your raise goes to 10 million and we go back retroactively.
19:20 To the day you hired and make up that six million dollar difference.
19:25 AP is going to take that deal right now, that guy will bet on himself.
19:32 I think it's a great deal.
19:33 It covers.
19:35 Mark Davis allows AP to prove himself.
19:37 I think it's a great contract.
19:39 What do you think?
19:40 Yeah, I think so.
19:41 I've never been the best when it came to contract numbers.
19:44 But I do think a sliding scale of some sort like that would make sense.
19:48 I started smiling when you first said three years.
19:50 Because before you even said it, the first number that came to my head was three years.
19:54 You had Josh in there for a year and a half.
19:56 You were going to give him two.
19:58 So I think you kind of have to give AP two, three to really see what he can do.
20:02 So I definitely think starting off with a three year contract is fair.
20:05 And letting him know, hey, again, playoffs or success of whatever kind will get you an
20:09 extension of some sort.
20:11 So I do think that's fair.
20:12 I think it's fair to everybody.
20:14 I think AP would understand.
20:16 Relatively new coach, brand new coach that protects the team, protects the coach.
20:20 Everybody wins.
20:21 I think that makes sense.
20:22 But I do think that sweet spot of three to five years is going to be perfect for AP.
20:26 Yeah.
20:27 And I think so let's say year two, he gets to the playoffs.
20:31 Now it's extended five years.
20:33 So now he's got six years left at 10 mil.
20:37 I think it's completely fair.
20:39 And I'm going to tell you, I don't want to take credit for that.
20:41 I originally was told that by a GM.
20:44 Oh, OK.
20:45 Yeah, yeah, yeah.
20:46 That's it.
20:47 Sounds like it makes a lot of sense.
20:48 Right.
20:49 GM told me with all the money Mark has on the books with Gruden and with with with McDaniels
20:57 and was Ziegler and all of that kind of stuff.
21:00 Now, so here's the next one.
21:04 Gus Bradley was doing a very good job with Rich Bersage in the defense.
21:09 They get rid of him.
21:10 Bradley's out.
21:12 Patrick Graham's done an amazing job.
21:15 You make a change, he goes.
21:17 You feel further.
21:18 I mean, you're letting good people go.
21:22 I just I'm this is what I'm saying.
21:25 Mark is in a really precarious place.
21:28 I'll be honest with you.
21:29 I there in my mind, there was no way Patrick Graham does not return next year.
21:35 Whoever like you like considering what?
21:38 No, I think you're wrong.
21:40 I doesn't get that job.
21:42 Yeah, I just I just thought he did such a great job in terms of everything.
21:48 He's been handed everything.
21:50 I agree.
21:51 I agree.
21:52 Remember all the grief I took this past offseason telling everybody how good.
21:59 That Patrick was always terrible.
22:02 He should go.
22:03 Yeah, you're just shilling for the organ.
22:05 Oh, he's that good.
22:06 Yeah, well, he's good.
22:08 And it's, you know, it's been pretty cool.
22:10 You know, it's been nice to watch him, you know, in what he's been able to do with that
22:14 defense.
22:15 But yeah, like you said, if champs not there, if he's not there, then, you know, it doesn't
22:19 really stop.
22:20 There's nothing stopping the organization from getting, you know, rid of Patrick as
22:22 well.
22:23 But, you know, considering all he's done with what he's been given, you know, I thought
22:28 that that was a you got to keep him.
22:31 But, you know, time will tell.
22:33 All right, hold on now.
22:35 I'm going to read you a text.
22:38 Okay.
22:39 Let me grab this.
22:42 You ready to laugh?
22:43 Oh, yeah.
22:44 I'll tell you who this was later.
22:46 Okay.
22:47 Okay.
22:48 When we're not on air.
22:49 NFL general manager.
22:53 Right after Marcus Peter and team or get cups.
22:55 We're so you and I are sitting in the pressure.
22:59 And it was right after we left the restaurant.
23:04 Actually, it wasn't when we were in the quote.
23:07 H man, so he calls me.
23:12 I thought AP was all players coach.
23:16 If that's true.
23:18 Why is he cutting Peters and teamer?
23:21 Doesn't sound like a player coach to me.
23:23 Lol.
23:24 That's funny.
23:25 That's what I'm sorry.
23:27 What?
23:28 I said, that's funny.
23:29 That's what it just kills the narrative.
23:30 Yeah.
23:31 Oh, we don't want to players coach.
23:32 You need a disciplinarian.
23:33 Well, hello.
23:34 It's supposed to be both.
23:35 I mean, I think so.
23:36 Look at it like this.
23:37 I think had the previous coaching staff been still there, the Marcus Peter situation would
23:38 have gone down on the field.
23:39 And in terms of lifetime, I think I don't think it would have went down like that.
23:40 I think Marcus was able to calm down because he he respected the players.
23:41 He respected the team.
23:42 He respected the players.
23:43 He respected the team.
23:44 And he was able to calm down.
23:45 And he was able to calm down.
23:46 And he was able to calm down.
23:47 And he was able to calm down.
23:48 And he was able to calm down.
