00:00 Meanwhile, many are dreaming of becoming an astronaut
00:02 because of this unforgettable experience.
00:05 And the story of our history and its history
00:08 will be told by Umaga,
00:11 who gave the pride and success to our country
00:14 when she was honored as the first Filipino Analog Astronaut.
00:18 If you and your journey is to be shared with us,
00:21 we will be able to watch the first Filipino Analog Astronaut,
00:24 Christian Jane Adchenza.
00:26 Good morning and welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:28 This is the proffee together with Diane.
00:31 Good morning.
00:32 Good morning.
00:34 Good morning.
00:36 Hi.
00:37 Tell us about the experience.
00:39 We heard that you were part of the Simulation on Mars mission.
00:44 Tell us about that experience, Jane.
00:47 I was part of it last week.
00:52 I just came back from the Philippines.
00:54 I was one of the crew members of the High Seas last week.
01:00 The High Seas is a habitat in Hawaii.
01:03 It is one of the Mars Simulation in Hawaii.
01:06 I think what I can say about the experience is that it is otherworldly.
01:11 Because when you are there,
01:14 it is like you are on another planet.
01:16 Because you can only see lava rocks and red soil.
01:23 It is like you are on Mars.
01:25 You are not allowed to go out.
01:27 We were isolated for 6 days.
01:30 We don't have social media.
01:32 We didn't have a shower.
01:35 We mostly eat freeze-dried or dried food.
01:40 We didn't have meat for 6 days.
01:43 It is like you are on Mars.
01:45 Is that how it feels?
01:47 It is like they are reenacting themselves emotionally.
01:50 But Diane, you know what?
01:52 It is not just her dream to be an astronaut.
01:55 She really wants to be an astronomer.
01:58 For our viewers who are not familiar with this,
02:02 what is the difference between being an astronaut and an astro-astronomer?
02:07 How does it feel to be an analog astronaut?
02:11 Astronomers study stars, planets,
02:18 the moon, or black holes.
02:20 They use telescopes or radio telescopes
02:24 or other equipment to study objects in outer space.
02:31 Astronauts go out to outer space.
02:35 They go to outer space to go to ISS or sometimes to the moon.
02:42 That is the farthest we can go.
02:46 That is the main difference.
02:49 One studies stars and the other goes out to outer space.
02:53 Jane, I wonder how you got chosen for the Mars mission simulation?
02:59 Before, I was in charge of mission control for other analog missions.
03:07 I became an investigator or researcher for space nutrition
03:12 for the analog missions in Switzerland, Poland, and Iceland.
03:17 I was not a crew member for the mission control.
03:23 One day, I thought, "What if I am a crew member?"
03:30 So that I can know what people are feeling when I study for my next studies.
03:38 I saw an application.
03:42 I applied to Poland, but I was not included because of the conflicting schedule.
03:48 I saw an application for high seas.
03:52 I applied and sent an application.
03:56 We had psychological tests and cognitive tests.
04:03 I was told that I was included in the crew for the November mission.
04:08 Congratulations!
04:09 Let's try to laymanize this.
04:13 As someone who is very amazed,
04:16 I want to know what you do in your mission.
04:21 As a crew member, my role in our mission is a nutrition specialist and medical officer.
04:31 As a nutrition specialist, I prepare the crew members' meals.
04:38 I check if they are eating the right food and if it is enough for them.
04:42 I also check the physical activity we do.
04:45 Sometimes, we are very tired or our activities are very strenuous.
04:53 Especially when we go out of the habitat.
04:55 We basically hike in the lava tubes.
04:59 As a medical officer, I check their vital signs every day.
05:04 If they feel sick, I check them.
05:13 You are a registered nutritionist and dietitian.
05:18 Why is nutrition important in space travel or human space flight?
05:27 There are many reasons.
05:29 First of all, when you go to space,
05:33 your bones have osteoporosis because your bone density decreases.
05:42 Also, your muscles decrease because you don't exercise.
05:46 We have what is called muscle atrophy.
05:50 That is what we avoid.
05:52 I always say this in my discussions on space exploration.
05:58 Food is not just about eating.
06:02 It is not just about sustaining our physiological or physical health.
06:09 Food is mostly cultural.
06:11 When you are in space, you are still a human.
06:15 You still have a culture in your genes.
06:17 You are used to eating.
06:19 I experienced that when I became an analog astronaut.
06:24 When I went there, there was not much Asian or Filipino food.
06:30 I had no choice.
06:33 At the same time, I found a way to prepare Pancit for the crew.
06:40 So that I can share our culture as Filipinos.
06:46 How was it?
06:49 We understand that there is pressure in preparing for the crew.
06:55 You mentioned Pancit.
06:57 What did they say?
06:59 Were they happy?
07:01 Emotion-wise?
07:03 I think they were happy.
07:05 They had no choice.
07:07 I see.
07:09 We finished one batch of Pancit.
07:13 But because we have different cultures,
07:16 they are mostly American and one Belgian.
07:18 I asked them what they want for dinner.
07:22 Especially if they are from outside or from ABA or extravehicular activity.
07:29 I am like a mother.
07:31 I asked them what they want for dinner.
07:33 One of the crew members called me the food mom.
07:38 Because I am the one who always asks for food or who eats cookies.
07:44 I asked them what they want so that they can feel that there is humanity in what we do.
07:58 In your journey from being a space nutritionist to being an analog astronaut,
08:03 what role did the space community play in your interest in space nutrition through the years?
08:09 Actually, it was a big thing.
08:15 I was exposed to the space community about five years ago.
08:24 But because of the space community, I met friends and colleagues who have similar interests.
08:30 They are nutritionists mostly from Europe.
08:34 They became my partners in the studies on space nutrition.
08:40 We had experiments and proposals for space foods and space nutrition.
08:46 The space community helped me a lot.
08:49 I was exposed to the topic of space nutrition because it was still new.
08:58 Even us, the space nutritionists, didn't know how to explore the space nutrition field.
09:08 That's great.
09:10 I wonder where you are from in the Philippines, Shane?
09:13 I live in Metro Manila.
09:17 I am in Mandaluyong now.
09:19 But I am from Luton.
09:25 We are proud of you. I wonder what's next for you.
09:29 We'll look forward to the next missions that our countrymen will join.
09:35 Thank you so much for sharing your journey and story with us.
09:39 Thank you.
09:40 Kristin Jane Atienza, again, thank you very much.
