mga trench sa Pilipinas, patuloy na kumikilos
Transcript
00:00 We are still in the news on the recent earthquake. We will talk to DOST Secretary Renato Solidum. Secretary Solidum, good morning sir.
00:11 Good evening Aljo.
00:13 What is the situation of the earthquake that you're feeling here in Metro Manila?
00:20 As mentioned earlier, the earthquake was caused by the Manila Trench. If the earthquake is deep, like 60 kilometers, the trenches are the cause of the earthquake.
00:36 This is felt in a faraway place because it is deep and it is spreading more widely, although it is less felt.
00:48 So this Manila Trench, is it right? It is coming from Batanes to Mindoro?
00:56 That's right. It is very long. Actually, the Manila Trench is a source of earthquake that we are monitoring and preparing
01:06 because it can cause magnitude 8 to magnitude 8.5 earthquakes, intensity 7 to 8 shaking and tsunami.
01:17 This is one of the scenarios that we are working on every last quarter of the year, during November, because it is possible that tsunami will hit.
01:29 So this is different from the West Valley Fault, which is the generator, Secretary, of the earthquake that we are worrying about. Is it right?
01:42 That's right. The West Valley Fault, when it comes to the strength of the earthquake, because the fault is on the ground, it will cause a stronger earthquake, magnitude 7.2, intensity 8.
01:52 In Manila, it is the province of Pulacan, Trizal, Cavite, Laguna. When the earthquake is in Manila Trench, magnitude 8, it can cause intensity 7 to low intensity 8.
02:05 It is felt in Manila, although in the provinces near the town, it is felt stronger.
02:11 But the tsunami's impact needs to be planned and practiced, aside from the earthquake.
02:19 If the West Valley Fault is shaking, the main hazard is the earthquake on the ground.
02:24 A question from our countrymen, the Cotabato Trench is shaking, the Philippine Trench in Surigao, in Natuan, and now the Manila Trench.
02:40 What is the reason for this? Is there a connection between the two?
02:46 The trenches in the Philippines are continuously shaking. It is really shaking at the same time. Sometimes, there are moderate to major earthquakes.
02:57 But this is normal. They will not collide. Every trench will not collide and will shake one another.
03:06 How many trenches are there in the Philippines that are being guarded by the Phoenix?
03:11 We have five. On the eastern side are the Philippine Trench. On the western side are the Manila Trench from Batanes to Mindoro.
03:22 Third is the Sulu Negros Trench. Fourth is the Cotabato Trench in Celebes Sea.
03:31 We also have the fifth, which we call Sanjiye Trench, but it is out of the country in Indonesia, but it is still shaking in Mindanao.
03:40 Is this a sign that other trenches will also shake because these three trenches are moving one after another, Secretary?
03:49 There is no reason why they will not shake, but that is not abnormal.
03:56 Because the trenches are absorbing the Philippines' shaking and sometimes, earthquakes will occur in different trenches. Sometimes, they will not be that big.
04:08 Will we have aftershocks after this quake?
04:11 In the Manila Trench earthquake earlier, yes. There may be aftershocks, just like in Mindanao where there are still aftershocks.
04:22 What are your recommendations regarding the entry of offices and schools tomorrow?
04:33 There is no reason for the entry of offices because the intensity we have recorded is only intensity five.
04:43 This should be entered without any pressure.
04:45 This is a disastrous event, right Sec?
04:48 It is a strong shaking, but it is not yet a disaster or the intensity that happened earlier is not yet destructive.
04:56 Okay. Thank you very much Secretary Renato Solidum of DOST.
