00:00 Well for more we can cross to Austin, Texas and literature professor Elizabeth Scala,
00:05 who as we're about to hear will go to whatever lengths it takes to get people to sign up
00:10 for her class.
00:12 Welcome to the show.
00:14 Thanks for joining us here on France 24.
00:16 It's my pleasure.
00:17 Thank you.
00:18 So you teach a course.
00:20 Explain to us the concept.
00:22 Sure.
00:23 Well, as you probably know, there are now many courses on Taylor Swift in business schools,
00:31 in literature disciplines.
00:34 And my particular course, which I launched in the fall of 2022, just before Midnight's
00:41 was ever announced, is a course in basic literary critical analytic study and research methods.
00:48 And so I get students to learn how to read closely, deeply, and critically using Taylor
00:55 Swift's music.
00:57 And what, it's true that her lyrics carry a message.
01:02 What resonates most?
01:04 I think students identify with the situations and the struggles that Taylor Swift presents
01:11 in her music and that she's done so since the age of 16.
01:16 She talks about situations that they've experienced and that matter to them and that maybe have
01:22 been neglected or sidelined.
01:26 And she makes them feel seen and heard and they connect with her.
01:31 So they're really interested in the topics that she speaks about.
01:36 Elizabeth Scala, we're going to, unfortunately, before we can delve further, have to interrupt.
01:41 We have to go to the White House.
01:43 The U.S. President Joe Biden is urging leaders on Capitol Hill to approve spending for Ukraine
01:49 before the end of the year.
