00:00 Coach Mike McCarthy had a bit of a health scare this morning.
00:04 Having some stomach pains, goes to the doctor and it is acute appendicitis.
00:09 Has surgery scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
00:12 Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn says everything is smooth.
00:15 That they have a plan in place but that they fully expect McCarthy to coach on Sunday.
00:20 What kind of impact does this make on this team?
00:22 Yeah, and certainly, first of all, as a man of a certain age,
00:26 like all the beat writers here now are scrambling to figure out appendicitis.
00:31 Don't you do that when you're a teenager?
00:34 My sister had appendicitis at 16.
00:36 Okay, we might be getting appendicitis confused with mononucleosis for all we know.
00:41 We signed on to be sports writers, not doctors.
00:44 But since I'm ancient, the other beat writers here ask me,
00:47 "Have you ever had appendicitis? Can you still get appendicitis?"
00:50 A doctor, Mike Fisher.
00:51 Yeah, when you're a million years old.
00:53 I don't know. McCarthy, obviously, late 50s, right?
00:57 Hoping the best for him through the surgery too.
00:59 No question.
01:00 I'll probably be as scared as him today.
01:02 I think that is part of this.
01:03 He showed up here at the Star, showed up for work and didn't feel right.
01:07 Now luckily, this facility, like most NFL facilities,
01:10 yes, even in Jacksonville where they didn't seem to have a cart for the quarterback,
01:14 I think he didn't want a cart.
01:16 He must not have wanted a cart.
01:18 Because they have a cart.
01:19 The AFC South, the Houston Texans, and the rest, they all have their carts.
01:22 But they also have players probably who says, "No, I'm going to tough this one out,"
01:27 which is usually ill-advised as far as I'm concerned.
01:29 But again, we're not doctors here.
01:31 But I think it is a little scary when you're of a certain age or any age
01:35 and you're going, "This ain't right."
01:37 The availability to be able to go to somebody in this building right away who's an expert
01:43 and then quite likely to go right there across the street where there's a hospital,
01:47 that's helpful.
01:48 So the Cowboys believe that this will not have a grand impact.
01:51 He'll be back in a couple days, and McCarthy, the plan is to coach on Sunday night.
01:55 But I will say this, and I'm not trying to be a contrarian about this.
02:01 If it wasn't important to have the coach at practice on a Wednesday and Thursday,
02:05 they would take off all the time.
02:07 Obviously it has an impact.
02:09 Obviously you're chipped down a little bit.
02:11 Especially because he's offensive.
02:12 He calls the plays.
02:13 Correct.
02:14 So can Brian Schottenheimer do a more than capable job?
02:18 Of course he can.
02:19 Can Dan Quinn be the head coach for the Cowboys?
02:21 Obviously he can and has been a head coach in this league
02:25 and went and won as an interim head coach a couple years ago
02:28 when McCarthy missed a game at New Orleans with the COVID.
02:33 Schottenheimer is a highly accomplished guy, and Bones Fossil, highly accomplished too.
02:37 So it's not a negative against them to say that if the head coach is gone for a couple days,
02:43 of course that matters.
02:45 But it will be something for the Cowboys to have to overcome
02:48 as they get ready for their three-point favorite status on Sunday night against the Eagles.
02:53 And let's say this, I haven't checked the point spread.
02:56 Is it so impactful that the point spread is going to change?
02:59 Because Mike McCarthy's--
03:00 I think everyone expects him to be back tomorrow.
03:02 And therefore the Cowboys will probably remain three-point favorites.
