00:00 The DepEd is now working on a way to increase the degree of the country
00:06 when it comes to the Program for International Student Assessment or PESA or PISA.
00:12 Joshua Garcia is back.
00:14 Before the 2022 report of the Program for International Student Assessment or PISA was released,
00:21 the DepEd is working on a way to strengthen the educational system in the country.
00:26 Vice President and DepEd Secretary Sara Duterte said,
00:30 "The program is a result of the innovative way of teaching math, science, and reading comprehension to students."
00:36 We have introduced the matatag curriculum, implemented the national reading, math, and science programs,
00:42 initiated the Catch-Up Fridays for learners and teachers, expanded the teacher career progression,
00:47 pushed for transparent educational programs and practices, and started digitalization among our schools.
00:54 VP Sara also recognizes the message that she should be a partner in the creation of an educational system in the country.
01:01 The PESA results lay bare an uncomfortable truth.
01:05 It has shown that a significant majority of our boys and girls fall below the proficiency level required
01:11 for full participation in society and contributing to nation-building.
01:15 Based on the 2022 PESA report released recently,
01:19 the Philippines has only scored 355 scores or Level 1B in math, which is lower than 472 scores or Average Level 2
01:27 for students aged 15 and below.
01:30 In reading comprehension, the Philippines scored 347 or Level 1A compared to the average score of 476.
01:39 In science, the country scored 356 or Level 1A, which is far from the average score of 485.
01:46 This is also the status of the country when it first joined the PESA assessment in 2018.
01:51 The Philippines is among the countries that have the lowest score in the PESA assessment
01:55 in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, or OACD.
02:00 The DepEd also explained that the PESA report can be used for adjustments to the curriculum.
02:08 There are many uses for PESA assessment and some of these can be used to indicate
02:15 how well prepared our students are for learning once they leave school.
02:20 They identify areas for improvement over time by schools, education systems, and governments,
02:27 and they allow a comparison of student performance and the learning environment
02:31 among different countries and economies.
