Charlie Neal Speaks On Chennis Berry Succeeding Buddy Pough At South Carolina State
Legendary broadcaster Charlie Neal spoke to me about the rumors of Chennis Berry heading to South Carolina State to succeed retiring head coach Buddy Pough.

00:03 You know, a lot of rumors came out today,
00:06 and I called him to find out if those rumors were true
00:09 about him being the successor for Buddy Pugh
00:14 over at South Carolina State.
00:16 He seems to be on target.
00:18 What's your thoughts?
00:20 Well, I had a long talk.
00:21 He was in Las Vegas to support Luper,
00:24 and we talked on Tuesday.
00:28 And there were three positions, three jobs
00:32 that I know they were coming after him.
00:34 I know Texas Southern came after him.
00:36 I know Southern University, who he was on the staff
00:38 at Southern at one time.
00:40 They came after him.
00:41 And but, you know, like, we -- him and I talked,
00:45 and he did not come out and say it,
00:49 but I can read between the lines, you know?
00:52 And he told me, he said,
00:54 "There will probably be an announcement
00:56 by the end of this week of where he's going to go."
00:58 He was going to go home and pray on it.
01:01 But, you know, if he winds up anyplace other
01:06 than South Carolina State, it would be a total shock to me.
01:09 First of all, Buddy Pugh was telling some
01:13 of the other schools, "Don't mess with my guy."
01:15 So, you know, him and Buddy are very good friends.
01:20 And like I said -- I said this to Chinnis.
01:24 I said, "One of the things you have to look at realistically,
01:27 first of all, if you take the South Carolina State job,
01:30 you don't have to move."
01:32 >> Not far, right?
01:33 >> You live here in Columbia.
01:34 It's right down the road, less than an hour's drive.
01:37 I said, "Number two, you look at the number
01:40 of coaches South Carolina State has had in the last 50 years."
01:44 You know, was it three?
01:46 You know, Willie Jeffries, Bill Davis, and Buddy Pugh?
01:49 >> That's right.
01:50 >> You know?
01:51 >> That's right.
01:52 >> And you know, the whole seal changes.
01:54 Southern has had quite a few coaches
01:55 over since Pete Richardson's left.
