00:02 Hey! Move!
00:04 It was important for us to make sure
00:06 that we served the story that the book told us.
00:08 [Grunts]
00:09 We didn't have to change the truth.
00:12 You just had to pick what parts of the story
00:14 you were gonna tell.
00:16 It was very obvious that George,
00:18 he really got the spirit of the book.
00:20 The boys, that boat, that's how I got it.
00:22 Joe Rance, he wanted to meet me.
00:24 He'd talk about how he had joined the crew
00:26 at the University of Washington.
00:28 I'd said, "Joe, can I write a book about your life?"
00:30 And he said, "No, but you could write a book
00:32 about the boys who had rowed with him."
00:35 You're all here because we're looking for
00:36 the eight most qualified young men to fill out J.V. Boat.
00:40 -Row! -Row!
00:42 We worked with Mark Smith,
00:43 and he wrote a terrific screenplay.
00:45 If it had been fiction, I probably would have pulled back
00:47 because no one's gonna buy that this could have happened.
00:49 I got nine seconds under the course record.
00:52 Look, it is true.
00:53 You don't root for the guy who has everything.
00:54 You root for the guy that was cleaning the dugout.
00:57 I've never had so many people come up to me
00:59 and tell me, "When can I see it?"
01:01 We had to screen it for the author,
01:02 and there's Dan crying.
01:04 That really made us feel like we did the right thing.
01:06 If it could touch me, it's gonna touch a lot of viewers.
01:10 Look at Washington! I don't believe what I'm seeing!
01:13 Those nine boys that came together in that boat
01:16 were the greatest rowers in the world.
01:17 What was really spectacular was they did it out of necessity.
01:21 It drives their story, and it drives this film.
01:24 As one! As one!
