00:00 Welcome to the KOC, the People's Show.
00:12 Checking the pulse of Husker Nation brought to you by DPS Concrete Construction.
00:15 Check them out at DPSconstruction.net.
00:18 Ladies and gentlemen, I took a week off.
00:20 I didn't feel like coming to work.
00:21 I just did nothing.
00:22 I laid around that.
00:23 No, I'm just joking.
00:24 I took my son's team down to Florida.
00:26 They played the Nationals down in Florida against, honestly, mostly ninth grade teams,
00:29 but they were an eighth grade team.
00:30 Did really well.
00:31 Check out the social media posts that I put out.
00:33 Hopefully I got some sort of a tan, although my kids mostly just made fun of my sunglasses
00:38 line tan.
00:39 How dare they?
00:40 But I'm back.
00:41 I got a special guest today.
00:42 I'm excited.
00:43 Okay, now this is a man who's got an offer, has offers from Florida State, Missouri, Arizona
00:48 State, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Kansas State, Michigan State, Miami, and more.
00:52 He is Nebraska's quarterback commit for the 2024 class.
00:56 Six foot three, 210 pounds out of Bellevue, Nebraska.
00:59 He's the first ever elite 11 quarterback to come from Nebraska, and during his time at
01:05 that camp he actually won the accuracy competition.
01:08 Mr. Daniel Kalin.
01:09 How you doing, my friend?
01:10 I'm doing great.
01:11 I'm doing great.
01:12 I'm happy to be here.
01:13 Yeah, man, I appreciate you joining me, and real quick, if you find folks who are looking
01:18 forward to seeing what Daniel and the other Husker quarterbacks can do next season, smash
01:22 the like button, and if you didn't know, if you're living under a rock, Husker Volleyball
01:27 just qualified for their 17th Final Four, their sixth Final Four in the last nine years.
01:32 If you want to show them some love, smash that like button as well, but real quick,
01:37 I want to ask you, Daniel, because, you know, there's been lots of conversations around
01:41 the quarterback position, you know, going into this season, during this season, after
01:45 this season, pretty typical for the quarterback position, but when the quarterback position
01:51 for Nebraska's 2024 recruiting class had an opening, you were committed to Missouri, much
01:56 to the delight of Husker fans, you quickly switched to Nebraska, and like I said, that
02:02 thrilled a lot of people, but what has you excited about playing for the Huskers in the
02:07 future?
02:08 Yeah, I think one of the biggest things at first is just being able to play for the Huskers
02:13 and just represent the state of Nebraska.
02:16 You know, I've grown up here, and I've seen how the fans are, and just the whole entire
02:21 excitement that surrounds the program.
02:23 So I'm just excited to, you know, get in there, work hard, you know, bring a bunch
02:28 of talented guys with me, and have as much success as possible.
02:31 And I think another part of that is I love the coaching staff that's up there right now,
02:36 I fully believe in Coach Rule, and I'm really excited to play for him and learn from him.
02:42 Now it appears as though you've actually done some peer recruiting yourself, so I'm kind
02:46 of curious, who are some of the guys you've been able to get to know throughout this process
02:51 that will be coming to Nebraska, who are some of the guys that maybe you helped recruit,
02:56 peer recruited per se, to Nebraska that will be joining the Huskers 2024 recruiting class?
03:00 Yeah, I think, especially this summer, at some of the official visit weekends and stuff
03:06 like that, I try to help out as much as possible with recruiting and getting to know some of
03:11 the guys we were going after.
03:12 And so I think I have a pretty decent relationship, or I've at least met everyone who's committed.
03:19 But obviously my two guys from W.S. and Devon and Isaiah, after I committed I was on them
03:24 a lot because I see them every day and we're teammates, so definitely pretty close with
03:29 them.
03:30 And then Connor Nelson is someone who I've also grown pretty close with, and before he
03:36 committed I was doing everything I could to kind of sell Nebraska to him.
03:41 Another big one that Husker fans have been excited about is Grant Bricks, who just committed
03:44 recently.
03:45 I've grown pretty close with him too, we have a pretty good relationship.
03:50 But really there's a lot of guys, especially on our official visit weekend, guys like Keelan
03:56 Smith, Gibson Pyle, just to name a few.
03:59 So it's a really great group of guys, not only because they're really talented, but
04:03 I think there's a lot of good kids in that group and I'm excited to get to work with
04:06 them.
04:07 So what about Matt Ruhle and what he's specifically building at Nebraska appeals to you the most?
04:14 I think something that appeals right away is just his prior success with training around
04:19 programs.
04:20 He did it at Temple, he did it at Baylor, and he did it pretty quickly.
04:24 And then obviously he has NFL success, or not necessarily NFL success, but experience,
04:29 so that definitely stands out.
04:31 But I think just his track record of what he's done at the college level, I think that's
04:36 what really stands out.
04:37 I think he's definitely the right guy for the job, and that's why I'm excited to
04:41 start getting to work up there.
04:44 So is the plan for you to sign on early National Signing Day, December 20th, and then to enroll
04:52 early in January?
04:53 Is that kind of the plan you have?
04:54 Yeah, that's what's going to happen.
04:56 I'm going to sign on the 20th and then we'll be moving in mid-January.
05:02 Ok, cool.
05:03 Now the rumor has it that you scored a 140 on an IQ test, which would put you like 98,
05:10 99th percentile of all standardized testing, and you have a 4.3 GPA.
05:15 Now, two-part question.
05:17 Is all of that correct, and also, how do you think that can help you when it comes to learning
05:23 a new offense quickly?
05:24 Yeah, it is correct, but GPA is at 4.1.
05:29 Oh, man, what a letdown, geez.
05:31 Yeah, the IQ score is correct.
05:34 Another one I did this summer at Elite 11, which has gained kind of a lot of attention
05:39 for draft picks, was the S2 cognition.
05:43 I think I was 96th percentile for that.
05:46 But yeah, like you said, that type of stuff doesn't, just because you're really smart
05:53 doesn't mean you're going to be smart on the football field, but it definitely can translate
05:58 as far as learning the plays, reaction time, how quickly you can process and see the field.
06:05 So I think that definitely is going to, it helps me on the field, has helped me, and
06:09 it's going to continue to help me perform at a higher level, because especially in today's
06:14 game, so much of the quarterback position is above the shoulders.
06:18 So you've got to be able to have a strong enough arm, but it's more important to know
06:21 the plays, know where to go with the football, and being on time.
06:25 What do you like the most about Marcus Satterfield and the type of offense that he runs?
06:30 I think the biggest thing that stands out is how versatile the offense can be.
06:33 Obviously, they're only in year one, and you weren't able to see everything just because
06:38 they're still putting stuff in, they've got new guys, getting everyone used to the system,
06:42 but you can kind of see where he's been in past places, whether it was South Carolina,
06:46 it was Spencer Rattler.
06:47 They can tailor the offense to the type of personnel that they have.
06:51 It's an NFL-pro style offense, so I think that's some of the biggest things that stand
06:56 out about the offense that he runs.
06:58 Now, Ruhl mentioned that going into this previous season, maybe his plan would have been to
07:04 possibly have Marcus Satterfield coach tight ends, and there be a separate quarterbacks
07:08 coach so to speak.
07:09 Now, he didn't say whether there's going to be any changes made that affect the offensive
07:14 coaching staff at all.
07:16 It's something we're going to kind of keep our eye on throughout this offseason.
07:19 But my question to you is, does it matter to you, per se, who the quarterbacks coach
07:24 is?
07:25 If it's Satterfield, if it's somebody else?
07:27 How does that impact you one way or the other?
07:29 I don't think that necessarily matters too much.
07:32 I think it's never a bad thing to have the offensive coordinator be the quarterback coach,
07:36 just because the quarterbacks can kind of work more closely with the OC and be in the
07:41 playbook a little better.
07:42 But I know that Adam DeMichiel also helps out with the quarterbacks up there, and I
07:46 really like him.
07:47 So I think the way they have it is great.
07:50 If they decide to get somebody else or kind of change it up, I'm sure it'll be for the
07:54 better as well.
07:55 I'm just really going into it, wherever they put in there.
07:59 I know it's going to be someone who's going to be a good coach and will definitely help
08:03 me develop as a quarterback.
08:04 All right, ladies and gentlemen, as you know, this show is brought to you by DPS Concrete
08:08 Construction.
08:09 You can always check them out at dpsconstruction.net.
08:12 If you are a general contractor, a building owner, a property manager looking for concrete
08:17 repair or work done in the Omaha metro area, such as street paving, building floors, and
08:22 parking lots, you can check them out at dpsconstruction.net.
08:26 If you're a diesel mechanic, CDL driver, or concrete finisher looking for a great place
08:30 to work, a great employer, Jason Armstrong is the owner.
08:33 Quality dude, it'd be great to work for him.
08:36 Again, check them out, dpsconstruction.net.
08:39 Now, Daniel, when it comes to NIL, when it comes to the transfer portal, I mean, college
08:44 football has changed so much in such a quick time, and it's almost hard to keep up with.
08:51 It's entertaining, it's fun.
08:52 Okay, but my question for you is, what are your thoughts on just the transfer portal
08:58 in general, and maybe even the potential of a transfer portal coming in and playing here
09:03 at the University of Nebraska and competing next year at the University of Nebraska as
09:06 well?
09:07 Yeah, I think there's definitely pluses and minuses to the transfer portal.
09:12 I think in recruiting, coaches obviously want to sell to recruits and make their program
09:18 sometimes look better than it is.
09:20 So I think it's a good option for guys to be able to get out of a situation that maybe
09:24 isn't the best for them.
09:27 I don't know how necessarily they should limit it or make rules around it, because it's definitely
09:31 been crazy the last two off-seasons, but I think it definitely has its pros and cons.
09:37 I think right now, I think the pros outweigh the cons, but there's definitely some things
09:41 I think that'll probably change as far as limiting and kind of slowing down the craziness
09:46 of the portal.
09:47 And then as far as Nebraska being a portal quarterback, they've obviously talked about
09:52 it, there's been a bunch of rumors swirling around, but at the end of the day, I'm going
09:56 to come in with the same mentality, just to compete with whoever's in the quarterback
10:00 room and develop myself to be the best possible player that I can be.
10:05 So I'm sure you watched Chubba Purdy and Heinrich Harburg last year, they both got to play quite
10:10 a bit, especially Purdy at the end of the year.
10:13 What were you thinking as you were watching those guys, and then I remember when I was
10:17 a young guy, and I knew I was going to be in the same room as, per se, a Chris Kelsey
10:21 or a Des Moines Adams, I was watching them as a high schooler, and then the next year
10:24 I'm a true freshman in the same D-line room with them.
10:27 So what were your thoughts as you were watching those guys last year, and are you looking
10:30 forward to when it comes to being in the same quarterback room as those guys?
10:34 Yeah, you know, I've been around practice, and I've actually known Heinrich since high
10:37 school, and he's a super good guy, loves the game of football, and then Chubba's someone
10:43 I met this summer who did a lot of good things towards the end of the year that I thought,
10:49 especially throwing the ball and kind of getting some things on offense going that they kind
10:53 of struggled on early in the year.
10:55 So definitely two good guys that I'm excited, you know, like you said, it's going to be
10:59 a competition every single day with them, but also learning from them and just growing
11:06 as a player and we'll be in the same quarterback room.
11:09 So I know Chubba had to get a surgery that he's going to be coming back from, but like
11:14 I said, I'm excited to get in the quarterback room and just start developing my skills and
11:18 competing with those guys.
11:19 All right, when you look at yourself, what would you say is your biggest strengths as
11:23 a player, and what would you say is the biggest thing you'd like to improve on as a player?
11:27 I think my biggest strength as a player, passing the ball I would say is my accuracy, but I
11:33 think it's really just the stuff above the shoulders.
11:36 I feel like I have a good understanding of the game, especially when I get into a playbook
11:42 and really know the playbook.
11:45 I think that I know where to go with the ball.
11:50 I have quick decision-making skills.
11:52 So I think that's kind of my strength is everything above the shoulders.
11:55 And then I think where I want to grow is definitely just kind of being a better athlete, be able
12:01 to kind of make more of an impact on my legs.
12:04 I know that's something that will definitely develop at the next level, getting to work
12:08 in the weight room and stuff like that.
12:10 All right man, last question for you.
12:12 My son rode at SeaWorld his first ever roller coaster.
12:17 Peer pressure got to him.
12:19 I thought it was great because he was never going to do it if I just told him to do it.
12:22 He ended up riding four roller coasters.
12:24 So here's my question.
12:25 I'm a big dude.
12:27 I don't exactly fit in roller coasters the best, but I did it myself as well.
12:31 Mostly because if he was going to do it, I was going to do it.
12:33 My question for you.
12:35 Have you ever ridden a roller coaster and what are your thoughts on roller coasters
12:38 in general?
12:39 This is my hard-hitting question for the interview, by the way.
12:41 Yeah, I've rode, I can't even count how many times I've ridden on roller coasters.
12:48 And I love them.
12:49 I think they're awesome.
12:50 Super fun.
12:51 I mean, I've been riding roller coasters for as long as I can remember.
12:56 So that's definitely, I would say they're really great.
13:01 What's your favorite one you've ever been on?
13:02 There's a few in Silver Dollar City and Branson, Missouri that I've been on.
13:07 It's been a while, but I know I used to love those.
13:11 And then the SpongeBob ride at Mall of America.
13:14 That was pretty fun.
13:16 It's pretty short, but it goes straight down.
13:18 So it's a little scary.
13:19 So those are probably some of my favorites.
13:23 I don't mind roller coasters.
13:24 I just don't like when it feels like it's going off the tracks.
13:27 That's not cool.
13:28 I'm like, no, we're going to stay on these tracks here.
13:31 All right, man.
13:32 I appreciate you taking the time to join me.
13:35 And as always, I've got some questions for you fine folks at home.
13:37 What's the biggest area?
13:38 Let me know your answer in the comments below.
13:40 What's the biggest area of improvement in Nebraska's quarterback play you'd like to
13:43 see next year?
13:45 Second question, what's the biggest area of improvement on offense in general?
13:49 You'd like to see the Huskers, what area would you like to see them improve in the most next
13:53 year?
13:54 And then finally, if you want to leave a message for Daniel in the comments below, Facebook,
13:57 Twitter, YouTube especially, go ahead and leave, I'm sorry, a comment.
14:01 If you want to leave a comment, show him some love in the comments below.
14:04 Feel free to do so.
14:05 Ladies and gentlemen, my week off is over, quote unquote week off.
