Virlei Wandscher's Fatal Crash @ Gramado 2018

The second round of the 2018 Campeonato Gaúcho de Motocross (Rio Grande do Sul State Motocross Championship), held on the Gramado motocross circuit in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, was marred by the fatal accident that claimed Virlei Wandscher's life.

Virlei Wandscher made a good start in an elimination heat race of the MX3 class, at 13h30 on Sunday, 22 April 2018, and was in the leading group after the first jump. Shortly later he lost control of his #981 Kawasaki and crashed into a barrier on the left side of the track. Several riders who closely followed him, were involved in the accident and one of them hit him.

Greviously injured, Virlei Wandscher was rushed to the Hospital Arcanjo São Miguel in Gramado, where he was pronounced dead in the evening of the same day. He was 35.

Owing to the accident, the organizers of the Gramado Cross Clube suspended the race and the remainder of the day's motocross events were canceled.

Born in Iporã do Oeste, state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, Virlei Wandscher ran a service station in his hometown.
