Las Vegas Raiders Coach Antonio Pierce's Monday Presser prior to Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday
Transcript
00:00 >> You mentioned that there are a lot of things to be evaluated,
00:04 anything in relation to quarterback going into Thursday or still?
00:10 >> Yeah, I'm still evaluating, we're going through that process now.
00:12 We'll see how the week goes.
00:16 >> When you looked at the game film, did anything stand out to you
00:22 that you didn't see from down on the field level?
00:25 >> No, no, it was very clear, it was evident.
00:29 Opportunities there in the first quarter, especially offensively.
00:33 Hurt ourselves with penalties, then we get down to red zone, penalty, turnover.
00:38 And then defensively at the end of the game, doing a really good job for
00:41 most everybody saw it.
00:43 But we just needed one more stop, right?
00:44 We needed one more stop, and we didn't get it close, but
00:46 obviously it wasn't good enough.
00:48 Special teams had a big punt return, the penalty there knocked us out of it,
00:52 right there, the 30 yard line.
00:53 So again, like I told you guys, the Raiders beat the Raiders last night.
00:58 >> You mentioned the evaluation, you're gonna continue throughout the course of
01:00 the week, with it being a short week,
01:02 how quickly do you have to make some decisions?
01:04 >> Not quick, we'll just go through the process.
01:06 Not gonna rush to make any decision, not do anything emotional based off what I
01:09 read here, what everybody's telling me.
01:11 I'll go off my gut.
01:13 >> You mean up here on Josh Jacobs?
01:14 >> No, all these guys are just coming in now.
01:17 >> How concerned were you, AP, with a lack of attacking downfield
01:25 to make the defense stretch a little bit to create some room?
01:28 >> Yeah, that's something we talk about each and every week since I've been here.
01:30 I think I said that, run the ball, play action, take shots.
01:34 Gotta call it, gotta throw it, gotta execute it.
01:37 And that's gonna be continued as long as I'm here.
01:39 We'll talk about it, and hopefully it shows up on game day.
01:41 >> As far as the results, can you give your overall assessment of how you felt
01:44 the defense played throughout the game, as well as kinda AJ Cole and
01:47 how he was able to put the defense in good field position?
01:49 >> Yeah, I thought defense played, it was a winning performance.
01:52 I mean, whenever you get the numbers, I mean, getting out to the quarterback,
01:55 I mean, you saw Tyree Wilson, Robert Spillane, Max, I mean, they're all flying.
02:00 J-Rob, I mean, these guys, they let it loose last night when we thought we could
02:04 take advantage of their offensive line in a pass game.
02:06 And I thought defensively, early on, we got after Jefferson.
02:10 When the defense would first play, Jack Jones had an opportunity there.
02:13 And then Epps put a big hit on him, and
02:14 then obviously you gotta do a good job with the tight end as the game went on.
02:18 But I thought the defense gave us an opportunity and
02:20 obviously a chance to win the game.
02:22 AJ's been outstanding all year long, changing the field position.
02:25 We just gotta be careful with certain things we do as far as maybe not
02:28 out-kicking our coverage sometimes.
02:30 He's got such a good leg there.
02:32 But it's a great weapon to have when you got a guy who can really flip the field.
02:36 Yes, sir.
02:37 >> You mentioned Jack Jones, he had a very good game.
02:39 Would you talk about after reviewing the film what you thought of his performance,
02:42 please? >> Yeah, I thought just being there for
02:43 a couple weeks, got in, learned the system.
02:47 Got in the playbook, Jason Simmons, working with him.
02:49 Like I said, second play of the game,
02:51 great opportunity right there on Jefferson.
02:52 Balls, his throwing, if it was a good ball, it's going the other way.
02:56 Had some really physical tackles, thought he was active.
02:59 I know there's a player too he wants back, like we all do.
03:02 But that's just good to see that whole group, not just Jack, I thought.
03:05 Nate Hobbs showed up, Amik.
03:07 I mean, those guys, they really challenged, we changed some things up defensively,
03:10 scheme-wise, what we wanted to do with the new group of corners out there, but
03:13 not new group, one guy.
03:14 And it showed up.
03:16 >> You like to have a short week where you're forced to move plum pretty fast?
03:21 >> No, we started on charges on Friday.
03:23 So our coaches got ahead on Friday.
03:25 >> But from a psychological standpoint with the players,
03:28 they have to quickly put this game behind them.
03:29 >> Yeah, we're not even watching this yet.
03:30 We're on the charge of a visual game at home, Thursday night football,
03:32 we're excited about it.
03:33 Yes, sir.
03:34 >> With Justin Herbert likely being out, how much time in the film room is gonna be
03:39 spent after these next couple days on Easton's stick,
03:42 somebody he might not be as familiar with?
03:43 >> Yeah, short week, right?
03:45 So are they gonna throw the whole playbook at him?
03:47 No.
03:47 What are you doing that second half?
03:49 What are you doing in preseason?
03:50 We'll go back and look at all this film.
03:51 But more importantly, the private scheme.
03:53 Kelly Moore's gonna stick to what they do well defensively.
03:55 We're dealing with a very good group of players on that side of all.
04:00 So we're looking for obviously a team effort from the Chargers.
04:03 They're coming off a disappointing loss like us.
04:06 It's a visual game.
04:07 Neither team likes each other.
04:08 It should be fine.
04:09 >> You mentioned Tyree Wilson.
04:10 He had a good game.
04:11 What did you see from him from the inside?
04:12 It looked like he really had a good day.
04:14 >> He's coming along, right?
04:14 You see the last couple weeks, that length, that size.
04:18 You see him get off, everything's happening a little bit fast for him.
04:20 Most, it's odd, he's going opposite.
04:23 Most rookies hit the bridge of the wall in November.
04:24 He's gotten better the last couple weeks, and we hope that improves with him.
04:27 >> That's the kind of performance that hasn't happened since you've been here.
04:33 Obviously, yesterday was a different kind of feeling than the other games you guys
04:37 have played, but been much better.
04:39 How did you kind of handle last night?
04:41 How did you react?
04:41 What was your kind of thought process leaving the stadium and
04:44 kind of going about your night?
04:46 >> It hurt, disappointing.
04:48 It was unexpected.
04:51 I thought we did a good job during the bye week.
04:55 Self scout, looking at ourselves and the opponent.
04:58 I thought I did the same.
04:59 I thought we did a decent job preparing.
05:02 Obviously, that didn't show up.
05:03 Whenever you're shut out and the game is played where the defense is pretty much
05:08 dominating the game, it can go either way.
05:11 Look, we could have won that game through nothing, right?
05:14 Didn't happen, but it's disappointing to let opportunities slip by.
05:18 And again, it is what it is, but
05:20 if you look at the last three losses in the fourth quarter, 20 to 13, 21-17,
05:26 0-0 to start, you talk about finishing the fourth quarter.
05:29 Gotta do better there, but obviously, it was a rough night, yeah.
05:33 >> You guys good?
05:36 >> Yeah. >> Cool, appreciate it.
05:37 >> Thank you, AP.
05:38 >> Well, you can go and check out the-
