We asked people if they think the TV licence is good value for money.
Transcript
00:00 Thank you, it's Alistair from Sheffield Star. I don't know if you've heard but they've just put the TV licence up by another £10 a year to about £169 annually.
00:07 We're asking people if they think that's good value or not. What do you think of that?
00:10 No, not particularly.
00:12 Is it a matter that it helps you would rather pay for something else or it itself isn't worth the value?
00:19 It's more when you see presenters on million pound contracts that you think where exactly is that extra £10 when you're getting bonuses in. Like Gary Lineker.
00:33 I agree with my dad, yeah. I'd rather spend my £10 on something else that's value is made and give my £10 to someone that I'm not sure of who they are.
00:44 And the service doesn't seem to get any better. It just is.
00:52 I guess they pride themselves on being able to do local radio and then there's the one or two hit dramas a year. I don't know the name off the top of my head. I don't watch much TV.
01:01 Is that worth it on its own? Is it kind of a public duty?
01:03 Channel 4, ITV, all do smash dramas.
01:08 Thank you. It's Alistair from Sheffield Star newspaper. We're out here today because if you've not heard they've just put the TV licence up by £10 a year, meaning £169 annually.
01:20 We're asking people if they think that's good value or not. Is that something you would pay?
01:24 I would, but it's not just about me. I'd be thinking about those that can't afford another £10.
01:41 That is a struggle a lot of people have to go through I suppose. They're choosing between things like the TV licence which if you don't pay and you still watch TV you're under enforcement, you've got food to pay for, it's cost a living or even just people would rather watch something else which is here or there I suppose.
01:57 What would you say for those people?
01:59 To those people, I think there should be a system where those that can afford it pay the extra.
02:11 Those that can't less pay less. I guess that's a tricky way of organising things but ideally people like me should be picking up the extra demands from the BBC.
02:32 Is it the sort of thing that should be enforced by law though? There are fines if you don't pay your TV licence.
02:37 I know, yes. In fact, people used to go to prison. I think that's been stopped.
02:44 It's mostly fines now, yeah.
02:46 I guess people have to be pursued if they're not going to pay for the licence but I really feel for those that have very little money and are very dependent on the TV.
